Oklahoma Sooners make top 3 for athletic 2026 cornerback
The Oklahoma Sooners 2026 recruiting class is just four players deep at the moment, but with the summer months approaching, that number will grow substantially ahead of the 2025 season. All four players are on the offensive side of the ball, led by four-star quarterback Jaden O'Neal. But the Sooners are the trending favorite for a fast-rising cornerback in the cycle, Ryan Gilbert.
Considered a three-star prospect in the 2026 recruiting class, Gilbert released his top three schools: Oklahoma, SMU, and Houston.
Here's what I had to say about Gilbert at the beginning of April after he was projected to land with the Sooners following a big recruiting weekend for the Sooners.
Gilbert has a strong athletic profile and is a competitive player. He plays bigger than his 5-foot-10, 170-pound frame might indicate. He plays fast. Gilbert shows off the ability to match well in man coverage. When playing trail technique, he does a good job staying with his receiver by feel, allowing him to look back for the football to make a play. He drives on the football well when playing off coverage and is a willing tackler in run support. Gilbert does a great job with his hands to break up passes even after it looks like the wide receiver is about to secure the catch. - Williams, Sooners Wire
SMU and Houston are making big plays on the recruiting trail right now, so the Sooners will have to hold off some up-and-coming recruiting schools. However, Oklahoma is in a strong position to add one of the more intriguing cornerback prospects in the class.

Mariners Give Logan Gilbert Injury Update Before Red Sox Game
Mariners Give Logan Gilbert Injury Update Before Red Sox Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite catcher Cal Raleigh's potentially historic 2025 season, the Seattle Mariners have regressed toward .500, now sitting at 36-34 ahead of a huge series against the Boston Red Sox. Advertisement Boston's lineup looks a lot slimmer after the stunning trade that sent Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, but after a home sweep of the Yankees, there's no counting out these Sox. Still, the Mariners have been without ace Logan Gilbert, who has been shelved with a flexor strain since late April, and being without Gilbert every fifth day has put a dampen on a strong start. Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Logan Gilbert (36)© Steven Bisig-Imagn Images An update given last week was that Gilbert would return to the rotation in 'a few days,' but on Monday, Mariners fans got an even better update on Gilbert. Gilbert will make his return from the injured list on Monday against the Red Sox after six strong starts in March/April. Advertisement Gilbert pitched to a 2.37 ERA and 2.15 FIP in his season debut, and pitched to an ERA south of 4 in three straight seasons. Despite throwing seven innings on Opening Day, however, Gilbert didn't pitch past the sixth inning in any of his following five starts. The Mariners' 3.96 staff ERA is 17th in the majors, while their 567 strikeouts is 22nd. Following a sweep of the Guardians, Seattle is under pressure to start performing in an AL West that feels up for grabs, despite the Houston Astros' takeover of first place. General manager Jerry Dipoto will likely target bats at the deadline, but the internal addition of Gilbert will surely help their chances at competition. (AP Photo/Michael Conroy, file) SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Storm announced Monday morning they signed free agent forward Mackenzie Holmes to their active roster. Holmes, 24, fills an open spot on the roster that was created on Saturday when center Li Yueru was traded to the Dallas Wings for two future draft picks. Last year, the Storm selected Holmes with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, but she missed the entire season due to knee surgery. Advertisement In February, the Storm signed Holmes to a rookie contract, but she was waived during the preseason. Holmes scored nine points on 80% shooting and recorded eight rebounds and three blocks during a preseason game on May 4 against the Connecticut Sun. Holmes player her college basketball at Indiana, and left the program as the Hoosiers' all-time leader in points (2,530), field-goals made (1,043), field-goal percentage (63.9) and wins (123). ___ AP WNBA:

Oklahoma Sooners included in Softball America's early WCWS projection
Oklahoma Sooners included in Softball America's early WCWS projection The Oklahoma Sooners didn't reach the Women's College World Series championship series for just the second time in the last decade. They were just a few plays away from extending their semifinal series against Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders came away with the clutch hits to eliminate the four-time defending national champions. Though many have claimed an end to the Sooners dynasty, the reality is it's just a bump in the road. Oklahoma will be back in Oklahoma City next year. They bring back a talented roster and add the nation's No. 1 recruiting class in 2025. On3 and Softball America's Brady Vernon believes the Sooners will be one of the eight teams to make it to the Women's College World Series in 2026. In his "Early 8," Vernon projected Oklahoma, along with Alabama, Florida State, Oregon, Texas, Nebraska, Texas Tech, and Tennessee, to make up the WCWS field in 2026. More: 2026 Women's College World Series way too early predictions Until the Sooners don't make it back to Oklahoma City, we will continue to predict them to be mainstays in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma projects to have nearly its entire lineup back next season, including Ella Parker, Kasidi Pickering, and Gabbie Garcia. The early transfer addition of former LSU All-American Sydney Berzon certainly helps. They bring back veteran Kierston Deal and talented rising sophomore Audrey Lowey. They will also have talented freshmen Sophia Bordi, Allyssa Parker and Berkley Zache available in the circle. - Vernon, Softball America for On3 The Sooners will still have a young corps of players leading the way in 2026. The addition of Sydney Berzon helps replace Sam Landry, but they need more of their pitching depth to step up next year so they aren't so reliant on the LSU transfer for every game in the postseason. If there's another area where they can improve, it's with runners on base and with runners in scoring position. Oklahoma had opportunities in their WCWS losses to Texas and Texas Tech but couldn't get the timely hits to rally against to of the stars of the tournament, Teagan Kavan and NiJaree Canady. They'll face the same challenges next year as Kavan, Canady, and Tennessee ace Karlyn Pickens all return for 2026. But another year with Ella Parker, Kasidi Pickering, Nelly McEnroe-Marinas, and Gabbie Garcia leading the lineup should continue to yield big numbers at the plate. Though the Sooners may not enter the 2026 season as the favorites to win the national title, you can bet they'll be one of the teams in the mix in Oklahoma City.
