Sandalwood cross from Kerala gifted to Pope Leo XIV
Thiruvananthapuram, May 23 (UNI) A hand-carved sandalwood cross with stones from the skilled wood craftsmen of Udupi in Mangalore was gifted to Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Kerala.
A delegation from the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church participated in the inaugural mass of the Pope Leo XIV held at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
In a message conveyed to Pope Leo XIV, Catholicose of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Pope and prayed for peace.
The delegation's presence reflected the deep fraternal relationship and ecumenical goodwill shared between the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and the Roman Catholic Church.
The participation in the solemn liturgy reaffirmed the Malankara Church's continued commitment to dialogue, unity, and mutual respect among Christian communities, a release said.
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church remains steadfast in its pursuit of Christian unity, and the delegation's participation in this historic celebration symbolizes the ongoing journey of communion and cooperation among the apostolic Churches.

Month-long family pensioners' redressal drive in July
New Delhi, June 11 (UNI) The Government's Department of Pension and Pensioners welfare (DoPPW) will launch a ]special campaign 2.0 for redressal of 2210 grievances of family pensioners and super senior pensioners next month. According to a DoPPW statement here, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions will kick-start the month-long drive. 'A total number of 2210 pension grievances have been taken up and shared with the 51 ministries/departments/organisations for redressal under the campaign,' said the statement. At a preparatory meeting under the chairmanship of Secretary (Pension) on June 11, the guidelines issued for ensuring smooth and seamless execution of the Special Campaign 2.0 were deliberated upon in detail. Secretary (Pension) underscored that the prime objective of the campaign is to provide qualitative redressal of the grievances. Sri Lankan Army commander in India to boost defence ties
New Delhi, June 11 (UNI) Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lieutenant General BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo arrived here on Wednesday on a four-day official visit aimed at enhancing bilateral military cooperation. This visit is set to enhance bilateral military cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration, particularly in the areas of training and capability enhancement, a Defence Ministry statement said. It underscores the continued efforts of both nations to further strengthen and deepen their longstanding defence partnership. Lt Gen Rodrigo held a series of high-level meetings beginning with an in-depth interaction with Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, Vice Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army. Both the military leaders discussed wide ranging issues including aspects of bilateral defence cooperation and regional security concerns. Later, he was briefed on Operation Sindoor and India's security perspective. He was also briefed by other senior officers of the Indian Army on matters of mutual interest. Lt Gen Rodrigo met with Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Chief of Air Staff and Rajesh Kumar Singh, Defence Secretary. These meetings provided an opportunity for the exchange of views on broader defence and security issues, focusing on matters of mutual interests. He also planted a tree at the Manekshaw Centre, symbolising time-tested relation of Indian and Sri Lanka Army. On June 12, Lt Gen Rodrigo will visit Jaipur and meet Lt Gen Manjinder Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Command. The General Officer will grace the Passing Out Parade at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, as the Reviewing Officer on June 14. This visit will mark a poignant return to his alma mater, where he was commissioned in December 1990, with the 87th Course of the IMA-an experience that laid the foundation of his illustrious military career. His presence at the Academy will rekindle memories of his formative years, now brought full circle as he would review a new generation of officers. Adding a personal and emotional dimension to the ceremony, Brigadier RMSP Rathnayake of Sri Lanka Army, will also be in attendance to witness his son, Foreign Officer Cadet RMNL Rathnayake, being commissioned with the current course. This confluence of legacy and leadership underscores the enduring spirit of camaraderie and leadership connect between the two Armies. Odisha CM claims his govt turned promises into reality in one year
Bhubaneswar, June 11 (UNI) Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday claimed that his government has successfully turned the promises made to the people into reality within a year. Inaugurating the State-level Vikas Mela 2025 in Bhubaneswar to mark one year of the state government, Majhi said that the past year has been full of challenges. 'During this time, we have achieved remarkable success in various fields and have fulfilled the promises made to the people,' he said. 'Our promises are not mere words; they are commitments carved in stone. We have made promises and we have kept them,' he remarked. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that a year ago, the people of the state changed the administration with new hopes and aspirations, entrusting the government with the responsibility to deliver. 'We are working with a strong commitment to fulfill those hopes and aspirations,' he added. Majhi said that in the past year, he has visited all the districts of Odisha, spoken to the people, and reviewed various development works. He emphasized that a firm stance has been taken to fight corruption. 'Look at the record of the past year: from a peon to an IAS officer, no corrupt official has been spared,' he asserted. Highlighting the progress made, the Chief Minister said that due to the government's strong will and commitment, almost all major promises made to the people have been successfully implemented. He mentioned that through the Kisan Kalyan Yojana, the annual income of every farmer family in the state has increased by at least Rs.30,000. Efforts are also underway for the all-round development of the tribal community, and the government has implemented the Ayushman Bharat Yojana to provide quality healthcare to all. The Chief Minister further stated that the government has raised the age limit for government jobs for the youth to 42 years and provided 11.25 percent reservation of seats in higher education for SEBC students. Majhi said that employment opportunities have been created for 12.90 lakh youth with an investment of Rs.17 lakh crore. He also stated that the South Odisha Development Council and the North Odisha Development Council were established to ensure development reaches every region of the state.
