Sugar board discusses Ramazan price stability
A meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board, chaired by Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, was held to discuss the availability, price stability, and public relief measures for sugar during the month of Ramazan. A press release issued on Friday outlined key decisions taken to ensure sugar remains affordable for the public during the holy month.
The board announced that sugar stalls will be set up at the municipal level, where sugar will be available at a fixed rate of Rs130 per kg. To ensure easy access to this subsidised sugar, the chief secretaries of all provinces were instructed to quickly establish these stalls in their cities. A total of 230 stalls will be set up in Sindh, 405 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and additional stalls in Punjab and Balochistan. This move aims to facilitate the common man and prevent hoarding and price manipulation.
The provincial governments will be responsible for managing the security, cleanliness, and crowd control at these stalls. Tanveer directed that the uninterrupted supply of sugar should be guaranteed until the 27th of Ramazan. He emphasised that the initiative is designed to directly benefit the public, and a special committee will be formed to address any issues promptly.
The government is also working closely with the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) and provincial governments to ensure full cooperation and a smooth sugar supply chain. Special security measures will be taken in Balochistan and K-P to guarantee the safe transportation and distribution of sugar to the stalls.

Selective patriotism
It was Ramazan, and a friend of mine refused to fast. When I asked why, he said that his doctor had advised against it due to health reasons. Yet, the same friend smoked incessantly. I tried to argue and asked whether the same doctor had advised against smoking as well. He made a poker face and said no such advice was given to him. I am not sure what kind of doctor would not advise against smoking. Even cigarette brands advise against smoking at the end of their ads. Life is a game of what one chooses to believe, practise, avoid and adopt. Just like religion, citizenship and patriotism are practised quite selectively as well. In the US, a specially tailored form of patriotism is in fashion, especially with the ascension of Trump to the White House. He was really voted in due to the poor situation of the US economy and the miserable conditions that the citizens found themselves in. Credit card debt had grown over a trillion dollars and even the paycheck-to-paycheck life that was once ridiculed had become an ambitious milestone quite far from the reach of the citizens. Immigrants were not really on people's minds when dealing with the inability to pay their bills. The genocide in Gaza and Elon Musk's tweets also played a serious role in defeating Biden. However, once Trump started his term, one of the first major things that he did was an intense crackdown on illegal immigrants, legal residents and even naturalised US citizens. ICE raids have become the norm in this society. The broader promise of America First and Make America Great Again (MAGA) did include this racist and violent practice but it meant that the interests of the US would be put ahead of the interests of any other state. Just like my friend who followed his doctor's advice on fasting but ignored it on smoking, when it comes to Israel, America is not first. The same politicians that make noise about patriotism and making America great again sacrifice all that in the interests of Israel. Ted Cruz, one such politician, proudly said that he had joined the US Senate with the goal of defending Israel and Israeli interests. Jews are disliked by this crowd but not when it comes to Israel. One US politician is quite interesting. Her name is Marjorie Taylor Greene. She is MAGA on steroids. She supports Trump and his racist anti-immigration policy. She is all about America First. But that same ideology, if that is what one wants to call it, also compels her to question the blind support the US provides Israel. She started making noise against supporting Israel, Ukraine and the genocide in Gaza. She even calls it a genocide, which is a term the mainstream Americans like to avoid uttering. She perhaps does not like immigrants like me in the US, but she doesn't practise a selective belief system. So, as part of that same mindset, she also wants the US focus its own citizens and improve their lives instead of blindly giving Israel billions of dollars when the US itself is drowning in debt. Moreover, politicians who care about keeping the US safe and loved around the world should also stick to the advertised image of America where it stands against the bullies and supports the oppressed. Supporting Palestine against Israel's terrorist actions is what America — if it truly prides itself on being the saviour of humanity — should be doing. This will not only be the right thing morally, but will also not generate anger against the US, which has always resulted in attacks against innocent Americans. This will be a policy very much in line with America First and MAGA.

Govt makes trade breakthrough with Iran
Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, led Pakistan's delegation at the High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Food Security and Agricultural Cooperation held in Tehran, achieving a major breakthrough in transforming Pakistan-Iran trade relations in the agriculture sector. According to a statement from the Ministry of National Food Security & Research (MNFSR) released on Monday, the minister was accompanied by the director general of the Department of Plant Protection (DPP) and the joint secretary of MNFSR. The meeting was co-chaired by his Iranian counterpart, Gholamreza Nourozi, and attended by senior representatives of key ministries, research institutions, and trade authorities from both countries. Hussain secured Iran's agreement to source a major portion of its rice imports from Pakistan. Both government procurements and private sector imports will now rely primarily on Pakistani rice, opening a consistent and stable export market for Pakistan. Addressing longstanding challenges faced by fruit exporters, the minister obtained firm assurances for resolving hurdles in mango exports, particularly delays in import permits and foreign exchange allocations. With these measures in place, exports of Pakistani mangoes to Iran are set to rise substantially. The minister also prioritised Pakistan's livestock and meat sector in the discussions. Iran agreed to focus on Pakistan as a principal supplier and to ensure that around 60% of its meat procurements are sourced from Pakistan. Similarly, Iran agreed to import large volumes of maize from Pakistan, with a commitment to resolve technical and procedural issues on priority and within the shortest possible time. Recognising the need for science-driven solutions in agriculture, the statement adds that both sides agreed to enhance cooperation between the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and Iranian research institutions. This collaboration will cover key areas of mutual advantage, including crop research, livestock breeding, water management, and innovation for farmers' benefit. The minister further secured consensus on a wide range of facilitation measures aimed at easing agricultural trade. These included faster customs clearance, the establishment of warehouses and cold chain systems, and improvements in border infrastructure to ensure perishable commodities reach markets efficiently and in prime quality. Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to moving towards a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), providing a long-term framework for expanding bilateral agricultural trade. To ensure that these historic decisions are implemented effectively, a Joint Committee on Agricultural Cooperation was formally established. The committee will meet every six months to review progress, resolve emerging issues, and maintain the momentum of cooperation. Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain thanked the Government of Iran for its constructive approach and warm hospitality. He highlighted the vision of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to strengthen trade ties with neighbouring countries and reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to being a reliable partner in food security and agricultural development. He termed the outcome of the meeting a turning point for both countries, creating new opportunities for farmers, traders, and agribusinesses. He also extended a formal invitation to Minister Nourozi to visit Pakistan to further consolidate this positive momentum, reads the statement. Both sides signed a Joint Communiqué at the end of the meeting, reflecting their shared resolve to implement the decisions taken today and opening a new chapter in Pakistan-Iran cooperation in agriculture and trade.

Economic boost: Tanveer pushes for greater autonomy for LGs
KARACHI: SM Tanveer, Patron-in-Chief of United Business Group, emphasized the need for devolving powers to lower tiers of governance to bolster the country's economy. Speaking at a press conference at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Tanveer pointed out that despite a significant increase in population from 32 million to 240 million, the country's administrative structure remains unchanged with only four provinces. 'The country has vast mineral resources worth billions of dollars, and every division has economic potential,' Tanveer said. 'No administrator can single-handedly drive economic growth; it requires local ownership and empowerment.' Tanveer expressed FPCCI's support for creating new provinces if the government believes it can stimulate economic progress. He stressed that a strong economy is crucial for Pakistan to compete with regional rivals, particularly India. 'We need to become an Asian Tiger to strengthen our economy and tackle our enemies,' Tanveer said, adding that a conference would like be held in Islamabad soon to discuss ways in this regards and added that parliamentarians would also be invited. He said that the 18th amendment must be implemented in true spirit. President FPCCI Atif Ikram, SVP FPCCI Saqib Fayyaz Mangoo and others attended the press conference.
