Gainesville teen runner honors fallen heroes, one mile at a time

The Brief
Fifteen-year-old Andrew Collinson is planning a one-mile run to pay tribute to fallen South Fulton Capt. Helio Garcia, who died in a crash two months ago.
Collinson says he's hoping to see a big turnout from local law enforcement and public safety departments to support Capt. Garcia's widow, who is also attending.
Collinson joined Running 4 Heroes when he was 13 and has likely participated in over a hundred runs to raise money and awareness for the families of fallen heroes.
GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Probably the only thing 15-year-old Andrew Collinson loves more than running is his community's first responders.
The Hall County teen could be spending his summer vacation relaxing like most people his age. Instead, he's dedicated to making sure the families of those killed while protecting and serving our communities know that someone's still thinking about them.
What we know
At around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Collinson will lace up his sneakers and hit the ground running to honor fallen South Fulton Capt. Helio Garcia. He's planning a mile-run through the Mundy Mill neighborhood to pay his respects just two months after Garcia was killed in a head-on crash. Garcia was one of the first officers to serve with the South Fulton Police Department.
Collinson is anticipating a law enforcement escort and a strong turnout from various public safety departments, all united in support of Capt. Garcia's widow, who will also be present.
Dig deeper
This isn't the teen's first mile for a fallen first responder. Collinson joined the fundraising nonprofit Running 4 Heroes when he was 13-years-old, and has likely been on over a hundred runs so far.
Besides the simple satisfaction of keeping himself in good health, he told FOX LOCAL's Judayah Murray that the real reward is in knowing the loved ones of these fallen heroes feel seen.
"When you go in the comments on YouTube, you'll see things like, 'Thank you for running for my brother,' or, 'sister,' and stuff like that," he said. "And it's just amazing to see."
According to the Running 4 Heroes website, the flag Collinson will carry on his run will be given to Garcia's family or police department afterward, along with a handwritten note.

Perkins and Vaughn each homer, Brewers beat Braves 5-4 for 6th straight win

ATLANTA (AP) — Blake Perkins doubled, hit a homer and drove in two RBIs, Andrew Vaughn also homered and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Wednesday night for their sixth straight win. Vaughn extended his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games and is batting .435 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in that span. Jose Quintana (9-4) allowed three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. Jared Koenig and Abner Uribe each threw a scoreless inning of relief. Trevor Megill earned his 26th save despite giving up a solo homer to Michael Harris II in the ninth. The Brewers (70-44) are 26 games above .500 for the first time since finishing the 2021 season 95-67. They set a franchise record for fewest games played (114) to reach 70 wins. The previous mark was 116 set in 2021. Sean Murphy and Eli White each had an RBI and Jurickson Profar hit a solo homer for Atlanta. Braves starter Spencer Strider (5-9) took the loss after giving up five runs on 11 hits over 4 2/3 innings. Key moment Isaac Collins singled, Christian Yelich doubled and Collins scored on a groundout in the fifth by Vaughn before Perkins hit a two-out homer to right field to make it 5-1 and chase Strider. Key stat Milwaukee is a Major League-best 33-24 and is 10-7-2 in series play on the road this season. The Brewers have won a season-high seven straight, 12 of 13 and 24 of 30 away from home. Up next The Braves have yet to announce their starter for Thursday against Miami's Eury Pérez (4-3, 2.70 ERA). Brandon Woodruff (3-0, 2.22) is set to take the mound for the Brewers against Kodai Senga (7-3, 2.31) and the New York Mets on Friday. ___ AP MLB:

WNBA security called after unexpected object interrupts Dream-Valkyries

The post WNBA security called after unexpected object interrupts Dream-Valkyries appeared first on ClutchPoints. The WNBA witnessed another nail-biting moment after Cecilia Zandalasini hit the game-winning basket to lead the Golden State Valkyries past the Atlanta Dream, 77-75, on Tuesday. Zandalasini scored on an 11-foot jumpshot with 3.2 seconds left to give the Valkyries the upset victory. The Dream still had the chance to steal the win or send the game into overtime but Brittney Griner missed her two-point attempt. Zandalasini, who only scored two points in their loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday, finished with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting in 30 minutes off the bench. She added eight rebounds and two assists. The Valkyries, who lost Kayla Thornton to a season-ending leg injury, improved to 12-13. The Dream, on the other hand, dropped to 15-11. But before the thrilling finish, the game was marred by a weird incident. With the score tied at 75 with 51.9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the contest had to be paused due to a lewd object on the sideline. A WNBA security officer had to be called in to remove it from the hardwood. As of writing, it's unclear how it got there and who or what it was intended for. It's clear, however, that WNBA players are often subjected to ridicule. They are continually mocked and belittled. Unfortunately, even in this day and age, racism, discrimination, and misogyny are still prevalent against female athletes. According to a report from The Washington Post's Albert Samaha, nine of the 10 most targeted athletes in the United States in 2024 were women, citing the study of a private firm that tracks online abuse. 'The interest in women's basketball has increased the level of exposure, and the arrival on the scene of more female celebrity athletes has intensified the problem,' said Moonshot founder Vidhya Ramalingam, as quoted in the report. 'My suspicion is that almost 100% of those perpetrators would be men.' The WNBA has yet to comment on the incident during the game between Golden State and Atlanta. WNBA Fan arrested for sex toy toss allegedly made ‘viral joke' confession to police

The post WNBA Fan arrested for sex toy toss allegedly made 'viral joke' confession to police appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Golden State Valkyries, in their debut season in the WNBA, have had plenty of positives to take away already. Head coach Natalie Nakase is firmly in conversation for the WNBA Coach of the Year with the Valkyries currently boasting of a 14-14 record. However, there has been plenty of bizarre incidents occuring as well. The most prominent among them occurred when a fan seemingly threw a sex toy on court during the fourth quarter of the game against the Atlanta Dream, leading to the arrest of one Delbert Carver. Carver was taken into custody and booked at the Clayton County Jail at 7:42 PM on Saturday before being released on bond late Sunday, per ESPN. The 23-year-old had allegedly thrown a green sex toy on the court on which the broadcast camera zoomed in before quickly switching away. Delbert has been charged with disorderly conduct and allegedly told the police that 'this was supposed to be a joke and this joke [was] supposed to go viral.' The Valkyries have not yet commented on the situation. 'The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans,' the WNBA wrote in a statement. It further read that any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will face immediate ejection, a minimum one-year ban, and will be subject to 'arrest and prosecution by local authorities.' A similar incident had occured during the Valkyries' game against the Chicago Sky. However, Chicago Police claimed that there was no 'call of service' for that particular incident. The Valkyries will now face the Las Vegas Aces at the Chase Center on August 6.
