Costco balances Memorial Day closure with strong gains amid tariff pressures
Costco customers looking to stock up for Memorial Day barbecues will need to plan ahead this year. The beloved retail warehouse giant is keeping all its US locations closed on Monday, May 26, 2025, in observance of Memorial Day, a move that aligns with its long-standing tradition of recognizing national holidays and giving employees time to rest and reflect.
More than just a day off, Memorial Day holds deep significance in the United States. It commemorates fallen military service members, and Costco's choice to close its doors speaks to a company culture that places values on par with profits, a rare feat in the retail sector.

Costco closes for Memorial Day and more key holidays in 2025
Costco has confirmed that it will remain closed on Memorial Day as well as several other holidays throughout 2025. These include Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The closures reflect a consistent message: respect for major national events and an understanding of work-life balance in retail employment.
According to the Wounded Warrior Project, Memorial Day specifically honors "the sacrifice and loss of those who served and died in the military.' Costco's move is not just symbolic but also strategic, reinforcing its customer loyalty by standing out in an industry often criticized for holiday consumerism.
The company's commitment to pausing business on key dates has long been part of its employee-first policy, which often earns praise from both workers and consumers.

Tariff turbulence creates opportunity for Costco in 2025
While many retailers are struggling amid rising tariffs and inflation, Costco is projected to be one of the few winners in this high-pressure environment. Analysts at Loop Capital have dubbed the company a 'tariff winner' thanks to its unique wholesale model and value-driven membership base.
In a recent report, Loop Capital reiterated its buy rating on Costco's stock but slightly revised its price target from $1,150 to $1,045. Despite the adjustment, Costco remains resilient with stock dropping less than 1 per cent in 2025, far outperforming the S&P 500, which has plunged 15 per cent over the same period.
Analyst Laura Champine explains that while short-term risks remain, Costco's deliberate pricing approach will help it recover and even expand its market share.
'We're assuming that margins are negatively impacted by tariffs. Costco is slow to pass on cost increases, so there is certainly risk to even our lowered estimates in the near-term,' she said. 'Over time, Costco capitulates to market pricing trends to capture its normal margin levels.'

Why Costco's model may weather the next recession
Costco's massive membership base, tight inventory control, and minimal advertising give it a defensive edge when the economy falters. With consumer spending under pressure, the retailer's ability to offer value becomes even more attractive to shoppers tightening their budgets.
Loop Capital believes that the very economic volatility troubling other retailers is what enhances Costco's value proposition. As costs rise industry-wide, shoppers are increasingly turning to bulk-buying and reliable pricing in areas where Costco excels.

US SC gives Trump admin's DOGE dept full authorisation to access social security data

Washington, June 7 (UNI) The US Supreme Court on Friday authorised officials from the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to access Social Security Administration data, giving it complete access to all sensitive private data of American citizens. The Supreme Court issued the authorisation after allowing an emergency petition filed by the administration of President Donald Trump to ask for a lifting of an injunction issued by a district judge in Maryland, who stated that privacy must be safeguarded, reports said. 'Under the present circumstances, SSA may proceed to afford members of the SSA DOGE Team access to the agency records in question in order for those members to do their work,' the court said in a three-paragraph order. The order didn't, however, give the reasoning behind its ruling, which has become a very controversial issue. The order was also challenged by the court's three liberals — Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson — all of whom dissented. In an opinion joined by Sotomayor, Jackson said the court was 'creating grave privacy risks for millions of Americans.' In the SSA case, US Solicitor General D. John Sauer told the Supreme Court that 'the government cannot eliminate waste and fraud if district courts bar the very agency personnel with expertise and the designated mission of curtailing such waste and fraud from performing their jobs.' The DOGE department, which was created by the Trump administration and was until recently headed by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, before his resignation following his spat with the POTUS, while not an official government department, was designed specifically to monitor data fraud and misinformation. The disputed data includes Social Security numbers, addresses, birth and marriage certificates, tax and earnings records, employment history, and bank and credit card information. The lawsuit challenging DOGE's actions alleged that allowing broader access to personal information would violate a federal law called the Privacy Act, as well as the Administrative Procedure Act. U.S. District Judge Ellen Hollander had ruled that DOGE had no legitimate need to access the specific data in question, according to Xinhua. The 4th circuit court of appeals, based in Richmond, Virginia, declined to block Judge Hollander's decision, prompting the Trump administration to file an emergency request with the Supreme Court. In a separate order issued Friday in another case involving DOGE, the Supreme Court granted an additional request filed by the Trump administration, allowing it to shield DOGE from Freedom of Information Act requests for the time being. Who is James Fishback? Doge architect steps away the moment Musk feuds with Trump; says 'it's time for Tesla CEO to apologize'

James Fishback James Fishback, the principal architect of the "DOGE checks" initiative, announced on Friday his withdrawal from the movement following Elon Musk's criticism of Donald Trump and demanded that Tesla CEO apologise to the President. "I believed in Elon Musk's vision to shrink government and make it work better for Americans. I'm proud of the DOGE Dividend proposal I developed and will keep working with the administration to return savings to taxpayers." Fishback said. "The truth is that Elon set expectations that he relayed to the President, me, and the country that he did not come close to fulfilling. That's disappointing, but okay. What's not okay is his baseless personal attacks against President Trump," he added. Praising President Trump, Fishback said that he is a once-in-a-century leader. He also said that the president won the popular vote, the Electoral College, and all seven swing states by championing the priorities in his Big Beautiful Bill which Musk said that he wants to 'kill.' President Trump has shown grace and patience at a time when Elon's behavior is disappointing and frankly downright disturbing, Fishback said and demanded aplology from Musk. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 BHKs starts at ₹ 72.6 Lakh | No Floor rise | Zero PLC Mahindra Happinest Tathawade Get Quote Undo He said, "It's time for Elon to apologize to the President and his family, cool off, and get back to work on inventing the future at Tesla and SpaceX." Who is James Fishback? The founder of the investment firm, aged 30, was raised by a bus driver and a Colombian immigrant. He left Georgetown University to start a hedge fund when he was 21, as reported by MarketWatch. According to the LinkedIn profile, in his professional journey includes working at Greenlight Capital in 2021, followed by establishing Azoria in 2023, where he currently holds the CEO position. Additionally, he leads Incubate Debate, a non-profit organisation helping secondary school students develop debating skills. Currently, he is involved in legal proceedings with Greenlight Capital. The company claims he misrepresented his position, whilst he has filed a countersuit for defamation. In December, he visited Trump's Mar-a-Lago to introduce Azoria Meritocracy ETF, which aims to invest in S&P 500 companies avoiding diversity, equity and inclusion practices. He has connections with former DOGE representative Vivek Ramaswamy and appeared on his podcast in November, Newsweek reported. Regarding the origin of the "DOGE Dividend" proposal, he revealed to Newsweek that the concept occurred to him during sleep. He stated, "It came to me in a dream. I woke up and called our Head of Research at Azoria, and we drafted the proposal during a two-hour lunch at Capital Grille." His "DOGE Dividends" concept aligns with his broader perspective of governmental rewards for citizens who identify wasteful expenditure. He stated, "... DOGE can save even more and as a result deliver an even bigger DOGE Dividend check to hard-working Americans." The proposal indicates that approximately 79 million American households could receive direct payments for reporting inefficiencies, potentially leading to increased savings. Sceptics suggest that while the plan is ambitious, it could potentially increase inflation and might be perceived as politically motivated rather than genuine financial reform. Fishback, who established a self-described "free thinking" investment company, rose to prominence amongst conservatives when he suggested distributing $5,000 stimulus payments to American taxpayers, which would be funded through DOGE's anticipated government savings. Despite never officially becoming part of DOGE, Fishback's "DOGE checks" concept received endorsement from Musk on X and caught Trump's attention, who showed interest in a "DOGE dividend." In December, Fishback introduced his anti-woke investment fund at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

Donald Trump reveals ‘true feelings' about fued with Elon Musk: ‘Nothing catches me by surprise'

US President Donald Trump revealed "his true feelings" about his public spat with tech billionaire Elon Musk in an interview with the New York Post. 'Nothing catches me by surprise. Nothing,' the president was quoted as saying when asked about the personal attacks launched at him by Musk, the former chief of the Department of Government Efficiency. Trump reportedly turned his conversation with The Post toward his polling numbers instead of directly addressing the strife with his former top ally. He said, "The numbers are through the roof, the stock market is up, billions are pouring in from tariffs, and my poll numbers are the highest they've ever been. Other than that, what can I tell you, right?" Later, Trump said while addressing reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday that he has no plans to speak with Elon Musk, signaling that the president and his former ally might not resolve their feud over a sweeping tax-cut bill anytime soon. Trump said he wasn't "thinking about" the Tesla CEO. "I hope he does well with Tesla," Trump was quoted by Reuters as saying. However, Trump said a review of Musk's extensive contracts with the federal government was in order. "We'll take look at everything," the president said. "It's a lot of money, He takes a lot of subsidy, so will take a look at that," he said. But Trump added, 'only if it's to be fair for him and for the country.' In a barrage of posts on the X social media platform since June 5, Elon Musk has criticised Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill', which awaits the Senate's nod. The Bill was narrowly passed the House of Representatives earlier. Musk amped up his attacks on Trump over the tax bill after he stepped down as the head of DOGE late May this year. The Tesla CEO's 130-day mandate as a "special government employee" in the Trump administration was set to expire around May 30. Trump had then bid him farewell. He had credited Musk with 'a colossal change in the old ways of doing business in Washington" and said some of his staff would remain in the administration. Meanwhile, Musk said he expects 'to remain a friend and an adviser and certainly, if there's anything the president wants me to do, I'm at the president's service.' Things turned south for Trump and Musk after the SpaceX owner unleashed an assault on the US President's flagship spending legislation -- the 'Big Beautiful Bill'. He urged Americans to lobby Congress to "KILL the BILL." On June 5, Musk intensified his offensive, cautioning that "America is in the fast lane to debt slavery" while insisting on a comprehensive overhaul of the legislation. "A new spending bill should be drafted that doesn't massively grow the deficit and increase the debt ceiling by 5 TRILLION DOLLARS," Musk demanded. Musk's comments came at a pivotal moment for Trump's self-described "big, beautiful bill", which encompasses sweeping tax reductions and expanded military expenditure. The House of Representatives had approved the measure by the narrowest of margins last month, with only three Republican members dissenting against solid Democratic resistance.
