Three die as Ukraine and Russia exchange drone attacks

Glasgow Times6 days ago
Russia's defence ministry said air defences intercepted or destroyed 112 drones across eight Russian regions and the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula.
A drone attack on the Rostov region, on the border with Ukraine, killed one person, acting governor Yuri Slyusar said.
Further from the front line, a woman was killed and two other people wounded in a drone strike on business premises in the Penza region, according to regional governor Oleg Melnichenko.

In the Samara region, falling drone debris sparked a fire that killed an elderly resident, regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said.
According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 53 drones and decoys at Ukraine overnight into Saturday. It said that air defences shot down or jammed 45 drones.
Eleven people were wounded in an overnight drone strike on the Kharkiv region, governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Saturday.
The reciprocal drone strikes followed a day of mourning in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Friday, after a Russian drone and missile attack killed 31 people, including five children, and wounded more than 150.
The continued attacks come after US President Donald Trump on Tuesday gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a shorter deadline – August 8 – for peace efforts to make progress.
Trump said on Thursday that special envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Russia to push Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in its war with Ukraine and has threatened new economic sanctions if progress is not made.

The victim had told investigators he was Woeltz's former partner, but their relationship had soured and he had gone back to Italy. But new court papers have revealed the staggering aftermath of the crypto bro's arrest - which saw him dragged barefoot and in a bathrobe out of his home. Woeltz, originally from Kentucky, quickly gave up the name of his associate William Duplessie that afternoon, the New York Post has reported. He told a detective: "My partner is William Duplessie. We have attorneys but I don't know them." According to Manhattan Supreme Court papers, Woeltz added: "He's from here, he's from New York. "We live in the same house. Yes, he wasn't there this morning." The documents further show him turning down officers' offer of free pizza and bragging that he had "detective friends". The crypto bro repeatedly asked to speak to his lawyer, and then asked to talk to his mother. While being interviewed by a detective, he said: "I'd love a lawyer, or phone call, or something, but thank you, no pizza. "I've been here so many hours, I haven't been able to call a lawyer or my detective friends, I've been able to call nobody." A few minutes after his, he revealed the name of his partner and asked for an attorney. He reportedly begged: "Can I get a phone call? Call my mom, and she can write it down. His arrest came after the Italian millionaire managed to escape from the apartment. Woeltz had allegedly been sadistically torturing the captive. According to investigators, he tied up the victim with electrical cords and used electrocutions to torture him. He also allegedly tased him with his feet in water and threatened to cut his limbs off with a chainsaw. Woeltz even reportedly took Polaroids of the victim being tortured, according to cops. He was charged with two counts of assault, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and criminal possession of a firearm. The court records further show that Woeltz told officers he was confused why he had been taken in. He said: "I don't know what triggered you all coming out here but I know it sucks." Woeltz further said he had been sleeping when cops stormed his apartment and that he worked in "cybersecurity". 6 The crypto investor allegedly tortured a captive Italian with a chainsaw Credit: ABC 7

Nicola Sturgeon has said her sexuality is not 'binary' as she addressed rumours of a gay affair in detail for the first time. In an extract from her new memoir published in The Times, the former first minister said the 'wild' story was untrue but admitted it did get under her skin. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad There have long been claims on social media that Ms Sturgeon is having a secret relationship with a woman. Nicola Sturgeon pictured with Catherine Colonna, the woman she was wrongly claimed to be having a 'torrid' affair with | Scottish Government / Flickr 'There were slightly different versions of the story, but the consistent theme seemed to be that I was having a torrid lesbian affair with the woman who was at that time the French ambassador to the UK, and who would later become the French Foreign Minister, Catherine Colonna,' Ms Sturgeon wrote. Variants of the story featured a 'violent encounter' between the pair involving an iron in Edinburgh's Balmoral Hotel, as well as the use of a house bought from Andy Murray's mum, Judy. 'Normally, I wouldn't have known nor cared about wild stories from the darker recesses of social media, and, if this one had stayed there, it would have been easy to ignore,' Ms Sturgeon wrote. 'But by late 2019 it was being openly talked about.' I was furious. It was a blatant lie. Not only was there no superinjunction in place, but such a legal remedy isn't even available in Scots law.' Ms Sturgeon said she and Ms Colonna laughed about the rumour when they met after lockdown. However, she also argued the saga raised 'serious issues'. She wrote: 'How do fake stories like this take root in social media? Did some Russian bot factory concoct a made-up story? Who knows? Then, of course, there is the blatant homophobia at the heart of the 'story'. 'For many of those peddling it, 'lesbian' and 'gay' are meant as insults. However, while the fact I was being lied about got under my skin, the nature of the insult itself was water off a duck's back. Moreover, sexual relationships should be private matters.'

Inside Putin's 'demands' that could end Ukraine war next week

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are close to agreeing a deal that would stop the war in Ukraine in return for Russia being able to hang on to territory seized during the invasion, sources say. The agreement would reportedly see Ukraine cede the entire Donbas region, while withdrawing its military presence in the parts of Luhansk and Donetsk it still holds. Such an outcome could be hailed as a win for Putin and Russia, which under the terms of the agreement, would in return end its attacks in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Sources told Bloomberg that talks are still fluid with terms subject to change. It comes as President Trump's deadline loomed on Friday, two weeks after he threatened Russia with more sanctions if the Kremlin failed to make progress towards agreeing a settlement. Asked on Thursday whether an agreement would be reached, Trump said: 'It's going to be up to him. We're going to see what he has to say. It's going to be up to him. Very disappointed. Trump has committed to meeting with Putin even if Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is frozen out of discussions. The Russian leader said he hoped to meet his US counterpart as early as next week, potentially in the UAE. Experts however, believe that Putin is bullish about being able to outlast both the US and Ukraine and could continue to play for time in order to extract further concessions from both. Other demands floated by the Russian president include fresh elections in Ukraine and a commitment the nation will not join NATO. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington think tank, said Putin remains 'uninterested in ending his war and is attempting to extract bilateral concessions from the United States without meaningfully engaging in a peace process'. Its assessment continued: 'Putin continues to believe that time is on Russia's side and that Russia can outlast Ukraine and the West.' Meanwhile, Russian forces have continued to advance deeper into Ukraine, bombarding cities including in the Pokrovsk area in eastern Donetsk. On the frontline, Ukrainian commanders continue to believe the only way to stop Russia is to defeat its forces and hold little hope of a negotiated ceasefire. A Spartan Brigade commander, who goes by the callsign Buda, said: 'It is impossible to negotiate with them. The only option is to defeat them.' He added: 'I would like them to agree and for all this to stop, but Russia will not agree to that. It does not want to negotiate. So the only option is to defeat them.' On Friday, the Kremlin said Putin had held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the latter who earlier this week had met with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff. Russian officials said Xi had 'expressed support for the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis on a long-term basis'. More Trending US sources say that China has provided military support for Russia's campaign in Ukraine, alongside North Korea and Iran. Putin also spoke with India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, days after Trump slapped an additional 25 per cent tariff on the nation for buying Russian oil, which he says is helping to finance the Kremlin's campaign. One Kremlin analyst suggested that Putin's flurry of phone calls indicated an impending agreement which could be finalised at a summit with Trump. Sergei Markov said: 'It means that some sort of real peace agreement has been reached for the first time.'
