Like most visitors to the Open at Royal Portrush, Scott O'Neil will probably pick up a few choice phrases particular to Northern Ireland. He may already be familiar with some given that his employees as CEO of LIV include several players and caddies from these parts, though it's doubtful they've told him to 'wind your neck in.'
Translation: give it a rest, zip it, just hush.

Like his predecessor, Greg Norman, O'Neil sounds like a man energetically trying to manufacture for his organization a reality that doesn't exist and suggest a momentum it doesn't enjoy. On a recent podcast hosted by one of his paid supplicants, O'Neil said that LIV will be the dominant global force in golf. 'I think the PGA Tour will always have the stronghold in the US … and I think we'll be the dominant player in the world.'
His assertion went both unchallenged and unexplained. If there's a single metric that points toward such a rosy future, evidence of it was neither offered nor requested. About the only yardstick O'Neil did cite was marital harmony. 'We had a lot of wives — I'd say, no fewer than a dozen — come up independently, unsolicited, and say, 'My husband's never been happier. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it.' That's nice.'
Pay and perks do make guys happy about having dropped anchor, as it were.
O'Neil went on to mention that he's friends with Brian Rolapp, the newly appointed CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises and Jay Monahan's de facto successor. He said Rolapp would likely be unable to accept his invitation to attend a LIV event because it would become too much of a circus — understandable since LIV tournaments are known for a sober focus on competition — but he expected they'd catch up at the Open, which Rolapp isn't actually attending.

By the time O'Neil added that he and his opposite number 'go to the same church' (as in Latter-day Saints, not as in the same structure), the sweaty desperation for relevance was all too apparent. Which is wholly on brand for LIV these days.

Take the circuit's decision last week to resubmit an application to be recognized by the Official World Golf Ranking. When LIV's first bid was rejected in October 2023, the OWGR made clear that field size, the lack of a cut and playing only 54 holes weren't barriers. It was the absence of meritocracy — limited pathways and players being exempt from relegation, no matter how execrable their performances — and the staging of team and individual events simultaneously.
'LIV Golf is committed to working together with the Official World Golf Ranking and its board to ensure the very best players are competing in the game's most prestigious events,' O'Neil said in a statement. 'We are confident our application addresses the outstanding questions that exist to support a more global, all-encompassing, and accurate ranking system. We are hopeful the review and approval process can progress ahead of the 2026 major season.'

Nothing about specific material changes by LIV to address non-compliance, more a haughty call for the rules to be rewritten and quickly.
An absence of particulars is typical of LIV announcements that are intended to simulate success that doesn't exist by any commercial measurement. Like last week's deal with HSBC, a company with significant interests in Saudi Arabia. HSBC will become LIV's official banking partner — just totting up the league's losses should guarantee employment for many — but there was no detail on the deal's duration (other than 'multi-year') or a suggestion that money was changing hands. HSBC will be a 'presenting partner' of a segment in LIV broadcasts which, the press release noted, 'has a potential reach of over 875 million households across more than 120 international markets.'
The 'potential' in that claim is working harder than Donald Trump's haircare product.
O'Neil declined to be drawn on LIV's player contracts, some of which expire later this year, notably Dustin Johnson's. His obvious lack of motivation notwithstanding, expect Johnson to be re-signed with much fanfare. It will be yet another purely performative exercise, a sleight of hand designed to create a narrative that LIV is doubling down when it's really just trying to buy time in hopes that Rolapp and the PGA Tour's board decide to compromise their product by incorporating LIV's as part of a deal they don't need. Anything to imply a lengthy runway ahead for LIV that isn't supported by economic tailwinds.
As the locals might say in Portrush, catch yourself on, Scott.

Council leaders have been urged to speak with businesses over controversial plans to sell a car park – and rule out disposing of any other site in the area. More than 1,000 people have signed a petition set up by traders in Bedford Place opposed to the proposed sale of the Amoy Street car park. Selling the car park, which offers 54 spaces across the north and south sections, has come forward for consideration as part of the Southampton City Council's asset development and disposal programme. Conservative councillor Jeremy Moulton saw his motion requesting engagement with businesses, a full economic impact assessment and for the final decision to be made at a cabinet meeting voted down by the majority Labour group. Cllr Moulton said it would be 'very bad news' for Bedford Place if the Amoy Street sites were sold. He told full council on Wednesday, July 16, that they were the preferred car parks for long stay use as they are directly opposite all of the shops, they are surface car parks and they are well lit. The Millbrook ward member asked Labour leaders to 'rule out categorically' any plans to sell the car parks in Handford Place, Southampton Street, Kings Park Road and Ordnance Road at least while the city council remains in its current form before local government reorganisation. Cllr Bogle said a final decision on Amoy Street would be made after assessing the feedback from the recent traffic regulation order consultation. 'What I can commit to as I speak right now is this is the only one in the Bedford Place area that we are proposing to sell,' Cllr Bogle said. 'I can't say never because that is impossible to say. 'The likelihood of selling another car park in this area is very low based on the analysis we have done and quite considerable amount of work and also the valuation.' Caroline French, owner Hampshire's oldest independent shoe shop W. J. French & Son, spoke at the meeting on behalf of Bedford Place businesses and residents who are 'deeply concerned' about the proposed sale. She said the car parks are consistently well used, regularly reaching 75 per cent occupancy or higher. 'At a time when footfall is already under strain due to shifting consumer habits and economic challenges, reducing parking provision risks deterring the very visitors our businesses rely on,' Ms French said. 'For many, particularly elderly customers, families with young children and individuals attending medical clinics, proximity and convenience are not luxuries, they are necessities.' She said alternative parking options are not viable, referencing views that Bedford Place multi-storey is unsafe due to anti-social behaviour and drug use, and Handford Place felt 'isolated and uninviting'. Ms French added: 'Once sold these car parks are lost forever. 'This is an irreversible decision with long-term implications for the area's viability. 'We urge the council to reconsider this proposal and engage meaningfully with local traders and residents to identify alternative solutions that financial needs with long-term needs of Southampton's local high streets.' Cllr Bogle said an 'extensive' exercise had been carried out to analyse demand and Amoy Street was the least used car park. She said the administration had already made a commitment to do further work with businesses. Cabinet member for finance and resources Cllr Simon Letts said: 'This car park will remain as a car park up until the time that the developer, if there is a developer, starts on site. 'I would imagine there would be two to three years potentially of continued use and during which time we can look at the options between the balance between long stay and short stay.' In his closing comments on the motion, Cllr Moulton said: 'I think you need to talk to the businesses. 'Why on earth are you progressing with this without talking to them? It just strikes me as unbelievable. 'It might be that they actually come to you and say we have got some very good solutions about how you can generate some income, generate some capital and we can all have a win-win result.'

A fish and chip shop which relaunched two years after being damaged in a fire has had a bumper opening period. Fish 'n' Fritz in Weymouth has been taken over by Dan Gillam and his family - who have reopened the takeaway side of the business. Mr Gillam said opening night went 'very well' and the business welcomed more than 300 customers. He added: 'It has been a long time coming. We had a few issues to overcome before opening and now we are open the team are great, and the customers are great. 'We have had lots of old customers returning, as well as customers on holiday that have returned who told us that Fish 'n' Fritz was always the place they went. 'All the locals are great and have been really supportive.' Mr Gillam said: 'We need to get the restaurant open as soon as possible as people are asking all the time.' Fish 'n' Fritz, which has been visited by celebrities and won a clutch of awards, was previously run by Paul Hay. A fire broke out at the premises - which is on the corner of Maiden Street and Market Street - on the evening of Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Roads were closed and nearby homes and businesses were evacuated for safety reasons while firefighters dealt with the blaze. Crews acted quickly to extinguish the fire and prevent the spread to the flats above. It was later revealed that the fire originated from a dishwasher. Mr Gillam previously told the Echo that his in-laws John and Karen Amos, who used to own Neptunes and Karen's Kitchen in Buxton Road – which is now Codfathers - are joining. Martin rebounded from bogeys on Nos. 6-7 with birdies on Nos. 8-9 to close his morning round at Tahoe Mountain Club, the tree-line layout that sits at an elevation of 6,000 feet. 'To be honest, warming up on the range this morning, it's cold. I'm getting old. It's hard to keep my body moving well," said the 37-year-old Martin, whose lone PGA Tour came in Las Vegas in 2014. "I had very few expectations, but went out, was hitting the ball in front of me, kind of hitting to where I was looking and made some early putts. Saw those go in, so confident with the putter.' Played opposite the British Open, the tournament is co-sanctioned by the European tour. The winner gets into the PGA Championship but not the Masters. Lipsky scored 15 points on his first nine holes, then dropped three on the par-4 second after his approach bounced off a greenside sprinkler into trouble. 'Bounced way over the green,' Lipsky said. Cameron Champ was three points back at 13 with Rico Hoey, Joel Dahmen, Danny Walker, Dale Whitnell and Todd Clements. Andrew Putnam, the 2018 winner, was at 12 with Jackson Suber, Yuto Katsuragawa and Vince Whaley. Max Homa lost a point, struggling alongside defending champion Nick Dunlap and NCAA champion Michael La Sasso of Mississippi in the afternoon. Dunlap lost six points, and Sasso — playing on a sponsor exemption — seven. German twins Yannik and Jeremy Paul also got off top slow starts. Yannik has zero points and Jeremy lost two.
