Alcaraz survives to reach Cincy semis as Rybakina topples No. 1 Sabalenka
Spain's Alcaraz broke Rublev in the final game of a tense duel to emerge a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 winner and will face third-seeded Alexander Zverev, who brought the winning run of fifth-seeded Toronto champion American Ben Shelton to its end with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Germany's Zverev complained of feeling dizzy and out of breath as he led by a set and a break, but benefitted from 27 unforced errors from a listless Shelton over 76 minutes.
Zverev earned a 4-1 lead in the second set as Sheldon angrily tossed his racquet on the changeover, and the 2021 champion polished off the win on a second match point and now has 24 hours to try and get fit.
'I'm not feeling too great now, but I have a day to get fresh,' Zverev said. 'I hope to be at 100%.
'I'm not sure what happened. I felt very well but at the end of the first set it got progressively worse.
'But I'll do all I can to give it a shot tomorrow.'
Alcaraz was broken while serving for victory at 5-4 in the final set against 11th-ranked Rublev, but he found his focus and used his trademark grit to come through three games later.
He sealed the triumph as an emotional Rublev hit an eighth double-fault on match point.
'I maintained the positive thoughts even if I lost focus a bit in the second set,' said Alcaraz, whose five titles so far this year include the French Open as well as Masters 1000 trophies in Monte Carlo and Rome.
'Against Andrey, if you lose focus it can cost you the set—or the match... (Fighting back) is what I'm most proud of.'
Rybakina revenge
Top seeded Sabalenka had no answer for 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina, who beat the Belarusian 6-1, 6-4 to book a semi-final meeting with Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek—a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Anna Kalinskaya.
Rybakina claimed a fifth victory in her 12-match personal rivalry with Sabalenka, avenging a loss to the Belarusian in Berlin two months ago.
Rybakina was aided by 11 aces as she reached her first Cincinnati semi-final.
'I'm happy with the serve. It was the key today,' Rybakina said. 'I served really well.
'If she had been serving well it would have been a totally different match,' she acknowledged.
Rybakina has won her last three matches against Swiatek, all played this season.
Swiatek needed 93 minutes and five match points to get past Kalinskaya in what she called 'the best match I played here.
'I'm happy that I'm progressing during the tournament,' said the former world number one from Poland.
I just played my game,' she said. 'It was not easy but I'm happy that I stayed solid and kept my intensity,'
In other quarter-final action, Veronika Kudermetova crushed Varvara Gracheva 6-1, 6-2 and awaits the winner of Friday night's match between world number two Coco Gauff and ninth-ranked Jasmine Paolini. — AFP

CALIFORNIA, Aug 17 — Director Spike Lee's multi-part documentary series for ESPN Films about former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sparked a national debate when he protested racial injustice nearly a decade ago, will not be released, the filmmaker and ESPN said. 'ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences,' ESPN said in a statement to Reuters yesterday. 'Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film.' Lee told Reuters on Friday that the series was not going to be released. 'It's not coming out. That's all I can say,' Lee said on the red carpet ahead of the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation dinner, a fundraiser for cancer research and treatment, in Beverly Hills, California. Asked why, the Oscar-winning director declined to elaborate, citing a nondisclosure agreement. 'I can't. I signed a nondisclosure. I can't talk about it.' Leong tennis siblings' inclusion set to boost Sea Games hopes
KUALA LUMPUR: Tennis Malaysia (TM) heaved a sigh of relief after securing the services of top players Mitsuki and Shihomi Leong for the upcoming Thailand Sea Games (Dec 9-20). TM vice president Datuk Seri Farid Ridzuan said the siblings' inclusion in the squad will substantially boost Malaysia's medal chances, especially in the men's events. It was previously unknown whether the duo, who are now both full-time professionals, would commit to playing the biennial games as they are touring constantly. Mitsuki and Shihomi did not compete in this year's Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions. "Alhamdulillah, they have agreed to compete at the Sea Games which is incredibly exciting for us," said Farid when met recently. "Mitsuki's inclusion will significantly strengthen our men's team and will allow us to give other nations a good fight. "It boosts our medal chances as Mitsuki is one of the highest-ranked Southeast Asian players in the ATP rankings. "We hope the men's team will be able to win (at least) a silver medal, on paper it is a realistic goal. "Our men's team have also been in good form as they showed during the recent Davis Cup and we hope that they will be able to build on that performance. "Our women's team is also strong and Shihomi has been in good form recently. The women's competition is, however, more competitive as the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand all have WTA ranked players." TM have shortlisted Mitsuki, Koay Hao Sheng, Leroy Yong, Imran Hazli and Darrshan Kumar for the men's squad while Shihomi, Elsa Wan Abdul Rahman, Daania Hazli, Hannah Yip and Lim Zan Ning have been shortlisted for the women's team. The squad lists will be finalised by Sept 1. Farid added that the Sea Games Athletes Selection Committee have accepted both the men's and women's tennis squads under category A, which means their competition costs will be borne by the government. "Based on our recent performances during the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC), as well as Mitsuki's (individual) ranking, both teams have been accepted under category A," said Farid. "We hope to be able to justify our category A classification by winning big for Malaysia, InsyaAllah." Mitsuki, who recently turned 21, achieved a career-high ATP ranking of 605 in late June but has since dropped to 640. It is nevertheless the highest a Malaysian player has been ranked in decades. Malaysia secured promotion in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group IV competition last month and achieved a top-four finish in the BJKC Asia-Oceania Group II competition in June. Both tournaments were held in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia won two bronze medals at the 2023 Phnom Penh Sea Games via Mitsuki, Hao Sheng and Christian Liew in the men's team event as well as the men's doubles (Mitsuki-Hao Sheng).
