Orissa High Court orders compensation for workers killed in 2013 landslide
The court also directed the state government to pay compensation of Rs 1.50 lakh each to the bereaved families within two months, with 12 per cent annual interest for any delay beyond the stipulated period.
Justice Aditya Kumar Mohapatra delivered identical judgments on July 10 in two separate petitions filed by the families of the deceased Taleswar Jani and Krushna Chandra Mallik. The petitions were moved challenging the collector's rejection of their compensation applications dated June 17, 2022.
The deceased, Jani and Mallik, had been engaged in a road construction project in Sirikibadi village under Banigochha police station in Nayagarh district. On July 17, 2013, while work was underway, a sudden landslide triggered by heavy rainfall claimed their lives on the spot.
However, the collector had rejected the families' compensation requests, citing that the rainfall on the day of the incident did not meet the threshold required under the Odisha Relief Code for compensation due to natural disasters.
The court ruled that the bereaved families are fully entitled to ex gratia compensation under the Odisha Relief Code. It directed the state to release `1.50 lakh to each family along with interest from the date of their applications. Failure to comply within two months would attract an interest penalty of 12 pc per annum.

Rs 91 crore credited in family accounts of former fund manager: ED
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing the alleged cheating of investors by Viresh Joshi, former chief trader and fund manager of Axis Mutual Fund, has said around Rs 91 crore was credited from shell companies to the bank accounts of his family members. The ED claimed to have details of 31 such accounts involved in the transactions. Joshi was produced before the special court on Friday and was sent to judicial custody after the ED did not press for his further custody for interrogation. The ED remand application in the case alleges that Joshi is associated with members of 'organised crime syndicate' engaged in large-scale front-running. It claimed further that money generated through the illegal practice was layered through various accounts, suspecting the proceeds of crime to be Rs 300 crore. '..the generated proceeds of crime… were routed through the accounts and managed and controlled by Viresh Joshi, including the mule accounts linked to 282 individuals/entities. He subsequently layered and placed the proceeds of crime in his family members' bank accounts and finally used it for acquiring several immovable properties,' the ED claimed, adding that these properties were bought in India and abroad. It alleged that no explanation or documentary proof was provided on the suspected transactions. The ED claimed that as part of his job profile, he was privy to confidential information which he shared for personal gain. Joshi's lawyer Manan Sanghai had told court that the Income-Tax department had frozen assets and his custodial interrogation was needed. It was also submitted that these issues were put before the SEBI in its probe.

Gujarat ATS arrests 4 for duping people with bogus Luxembourg visas
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Friday said it has arrested four persons from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar for allegedly duping over 40 persons by giving them bogus visas of Luxembourg. The arrested persons comprise Mumbai-resident Tabrez Gulam Rasool Kashmiri, and his associates Mayank Jitendra Bhardwaj, Tejendra alias Kishan Gajjar, and Manish alias Kumar Hargovindbhai Patel, all residents of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad, an ATS release said on Friday. Based on information that some persons had provided fake visas to several people, a team was formed to apprehend them, the ATS said. A preliminary inquiry was initiated, and notices were issued to Bhardwaj and Tejendra directing them to appear at the ATS office in Ahmedabad. A statement from the ATS said, 'During the interrogation, the duo admitted to taking fees ranging from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh from five individuals after promising them valid Luxembourg visas.' They claimed that the visa processing work was allegedly carried out by Manish through Tabrez Kashmiri of Mumbai. To crosscheck their claim of issuing valid visas to the clients, the ATS sent five visas of Bhavsar Himanshu Rameshchandra, Patel Archit Kumar Sanjaybhai, Patel Nileshbhai Virabhai, Parmar Sanjaykumar Jayantibhai, and Sokriwala Krunal Vijendrasinh to the Embassy of Luxembourg in New Delhi for verification. The Embassy informed the ATS that visas of these individuals were not genuine, the release said. 'It was further revealed that these five individuals had previously applied for short term (business) visas, but their applications were rejected as the job offer documents submitted by them were found to be bogus. After failing to get a visa, these five individuals approached the accused, who promised to get them valid business visas,' the release said. The ATS also found that the accused had also provided bogus Luxembourg visas to 39 other individuals. Based on these findings, an FIR was registered on August 7 at the ATS Police Station under offences punishable under Sections 318(3) (cheating), 336(2) (forgery), 336(3), 337, 338, 61, and 54 of the BNS. The Gujarat ATS said that the investigation is underway to identify other individuals involved in the case.
