M-League to take a break to help Harimau Malaya

KUALA LUMPUR: The M-League will take a break to enable Malaysia to send their strongest national team to the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup from Aug 26-Sept 9 in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
The Malaysian Football League (MFL) said that the M-League, scheduled to start on Aug 8, will take a short break during the CAFA Cup, thus allowing the national team to call up the best available players for the tournament.
MFL acting chief executive officer Shazli Shaik said: "Since the CAFA Cup takes place just before the Fifa window, we are giving way to the national team.
"We know that assembling the national team will involve players from major clubs such as Johor Darul Ta'zim, Selangor and possibly Sabah and KL City.
"Priority will be given to the national team, and during that period, there will be no league matches," he said.
The CAFA Nations Cup will feature eight teams, including 2026 World Cup qualifiers Iran (world No. 18) and Uzbekistan (No. 57). The other expected participants are Oman (No. 77), Kyrgyzstan (No. 103), Tajikistan (No. 104), Turkmenistan (No. 142), and Afghanistan (No. 160).
Shazli stressed that the national team's agenda would not disrupt the M-League, as no fixtures will be postponed to accommodate Harimau Malaya.
"There's no issue of postponement as the league calendar is yet to be released. We've taken the national team's request into consideration to ensure it doesn't interfere with league proceedings.
"In the past, such requests were made while the league was already ongoing. We're now in constant communication with the national team."

China sacks Ivankovic after World Cup qualifying flop

BEIJING: China's football association on Friday said it has sacked national coach Branko Ivankovic after the country failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The decision followed a series of setbacks in qualifying for China, who have only ever played once in a World Cup. China lost 1-0 to Indonesia in early June, a result that effectively dashed the national team's hopes of qualifying. They ultimately finished second-to-last in their Asian group, with seven defeats in 10 matches. "As the Chinese men's national team failed to qualify for the play-off stage, the contract of the coach and his staff has been automatically terminated, in accordance with the stipulated terms," the Chinese Football Association said in a statement Friday. "Branko Ivankovic will no longer lead the national team," it said, thanking the Croatian, who has coached Dinamo Zagreb and Iran, for his "hard work." The Serbian coach of the Chinese U-19 men's national team, Dejan Djurdjevic, has been appointed interim national coach, the CFA said. The Chinese team are ranked 94th in the world by FIFA, continuing a downward slide that began several years ago. The side have long been the target of ridicule by Chinese fans due to their poor results and the multiple corruption scandals plaguing the sport. President Xi Jinping has said he wanted China to win the World Cup one day, but the latest flop means they have only ever played there once, in 2002, when they failed to get a point or score a goal.--AFP

Argentina midfielder Paredes set to join Boca Juniors from Roma

ARGENTINA and AS Roma midfielder Leandro Paredes has accepted an offer to join Boca Juniors next season, an official at the top-tier Argentine club told Reuters on Thursday. The 30-year-old Paredes has a clause in his Roma contract that allows him to leave the Serie A club for $3.5 million. 'Now he must execute the clause,' the Argentine club source told Reuters. A World Cup winner with Argentina, Paredes began his career at Boca in 2010, before his first stint with Roma in 2014. He also played for Empoli, Zenit St Petersburg, Paris St Germain and Juventus. Boca are planning a major overhaul following a disappointing season in which they crashed out in the preliminary round of the Copa Libertadores and failed to make it out of the group stage at the Club World Cup. ARGENTINA midfielder Leandro Paredes is set to return to Boca Juniors after accepting an offer from the Argentine club, a Boca official confirmed to Reuters on Thursday. The 30-year-old, currently with AS Roma, has a release clause of $3.5 million in his contract. 'Now he must execute the clause,' the Boca official said. Paredes, a key figure in Argentina's 2022 World Cup triumph, began his professional career at Boca in 2010 before moving to Roma in 2014. His career also includes spells at Empoli, Zenit St Petersburg, Paris St Germain, and Juventus. Boca Juniors are undergoing a squad revamp after a lackluster season, which saw them exit early in the Copa Libertadores and fail to progress past the group stage in the Club World Cup. Paredes' return is expected to bolster the team's midfield as they aim for a stronger campaign next season.
