No. 10 overall seed Mississippi beats Murray State 19-8 to stay alive in Oxford Regional

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Will Furniss hit two home runs, including the first of three straight in the fourth inning by 10th-overall seed Mississippi, and the Rebels rolled a 19-8 victory over Murray State on Sunday to force a showdown at the Oxford Regional.
The Rebels (43-20) eliminated Georgia Tech with an 11-9 win earlier Sunday and need another win over the Racers on Monday to advance to the super regionals. Murray State (41-14) sent Ole Miss to the loser's bracket with a 9-6 victory in Friday's opener.
Furniss hit a two-run shot on the final pitch from starter Kane Elmy to ignite an eight-run third inning that saw the Rebels erase 3-2 deficit. Furniss, Judd Utermark and Isaac Humphrey began a five-run fourth with solo shots off reliever Reese Oakley to make it 15-4.
Furniss had four hit and four RBIs. Mitchell Sanford had three singles, driving in three and scoring twice. Humphrey finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Austin Fawley had two hits and three RBIs. His two-run homer in the second got the Rebels off and running.
Dustin Mercer three hits for Murray State with two doubles and two RBIs.
Mississippi is making its 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Rebels have played in six College World Series and won it in their most recent appearance in 2022.
Murray State is playing in the tournament for the fourth time and first since 2003.

Indianapolis to host US Olympic swimming trials again in 2028 after last year's record run

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The 2028 U.S. Olympic swimming trials will return to Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium after drawing record-breaking crowds last year in the first event held inside a football stadium. USA Swimming officials made the announcement Tuesday in Indianapolis where this year's national championships are being held this week. Dates for the event have not yet been announced. Organizers intend to build three temporary pools on top of the NFL's Colts' home field — a 50-meter competition pool and two warm-up pools. The Indiana Convention Center, which is connected to the stadium, will host USA Swimming's Toyota Aqua Zone. Last year, more than 285,000 fans attended the nine-day trials. That was a 60% increase over previous events. Single session records also were shattered as television ratings increased 20% from the previous team trials in 2021. Organizers estimated the event helped generate $132 million in revenue for the city. The 2024 trials also won the annual Fan Engagement Award and were a finalist for Sports Business Journal's event of the year. Indianapolis has a long and storied history with the Olympic swimming trials. The 2028 trials will mark the eighth time the city has hosted the event since 1924 when Johnny Weissmuller and Duke Kahanamoku were the stars. Other familiar names who qualified for the U.S. Olympic teams include Amanda Beard, Janet Evans, Rowdy Gaines, Katie Ledecky, Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres. The 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles and could again feature the brother-sister duo of Alex and Aaron Shackell, who swam for nearby Carmel High School. ___ AP sports:

Clàudia Pina scores twice as Spain beats England 2-1 in Nations League

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — World champion Spain beat European champion England 2-1 on Tuesday in the UEFA Women's Nations League in their last competitive game before the Lionesses defend their title next month. Spain substitute Clàudia Pina turned the game around by scoring twice within minutes of coming on in the second half after England led thanks to Alessia Russo's goal in the 22nd. Barcelona forward Pina struck in the 60th and 70th minutes at Espanyol's stadium to ensure Spain topped their Nations League group despite losing 1-0 to England at Wembley Stadium in February. Spain, which also beat England in the 2023 Women's World Cup final, advances to the semifinals in October. The draw is made Friday and will involve defending champion Spain, France, Germany and Sweden. The European Championship is the priority this year, and the 16-team tournament kicks off July 2 in Switzerland. England is in a tough group with France, the Netherlands and Wales. Spain is drawn with Portugal, Belgium and Italy. Playing in her 50th game for England, Russo's goal was her 22nd for her country. The Arsenal forward was in the Women's Champions League winning team last month, dethroning Pina's Barcelona. Diamondbacks put RHP Corbin Burnes on 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation

ATLANTA (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes has been put on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, two days after leaving a start early against the Washington Nationals. Arizona led 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Burnes allowed a single by CJ Abrams with two outs. The right-hander then gestured toward the dugout with his glove and yelled in frustration. Burnes allowed a run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, with a walk and six strikeouts. He is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 11 starts this season. Arizona signed Burnes to a $210 million, six-year contract before the season, and the 30-year-old has been very durable over the past several years. He's made at least 28 starts in every season since he won the 2021 National League Cy Young Award for the Milwaukee Brewers. The D-backs called up left-hander Tommy Henry to take Burnes' spot on the roster. He's pitched in one game this season, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
