Make J&K dry like Gujarat: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz

called Friday for J&K to be made a 'dry state like Gujarat' as he opposed authorities' move to open more liquor shops, claiming such steps were 'a deliberate attempt to push our youths further into addiction'.
'J&K is a Muslim-majority region and sale and consumption of liquor is against Islam's tenets,' Mirwaiz said during Friday prayers at Srinagar's Jamia Masjid. The trigger was a protest the previous day by locals in Srinagar's Batmaloo against the opening of a liquor shop in the area that had not seen such outlets for decades.
'If Gujarat can be declared a dry state, there is no reason why J&K should be exempted,' Mirwaiz said.
This was the first call to protest in recent months on any issue from Mirwaiz, who is also chief cleric of Kashmir and has been put in home detention ahead of Friday prayers on many occasions in the past few months.
Mirwaiz urged the state's Omar Abdullah-led National Conference govt and lieutenant-governor Manoj Sinha to check the trend. 'If govt does not act, we will be forced to protest. This isn't a minor issue,' Mirwaiz said.

Authorities have linked the new liquor licences and shops to a spurt in tourism since the 2019 abrogation of J&K's special status under Article 370. In the case of Batmaloo, excise officials claimed the shop, now shut after the agitation, was not a new one and had been only relocated from another area.
Despite such opposition, J&K's alcohol sales are on the rise. The Omar-led govt's economic survey earlier this year estimated excise revenues at Rs 2,000 crore in 2024-25, up 4% over the previous year.
Mirwaiz rejected the argument that liquor sales were necessary for tourism, pointing out that J&K had welcomed visitors for centuries without promoting alcohol. 'Has J&K become a tourist spot only after 2019 (Article 370 abrogation)? For hundreds of years, tourists have visited us but liquor was never promoted on this scale in every locality,' Mirwaiz said.
Drawing a comparison with Gujarat, Mirwaiz stressed that alcohol was banned there due to its impact on society and asked why similar concerns were not valid for J&K.
'Don't we have a society? Don't we have to live here, too,' Mirwaiz said.
According to him, over 1 lakh people in J&K are already affected by drug addiction and govt's fillip to alcohol sales will only aggravate the crisis.
Some local Kashmiri Pandits led by an activist, Sandeep Mawa, had recently demanded a ban on liquor sales in the Valley. In March this year, PDP MLA Fayaz Ahmad Mir had introduced a private member's bill seeking such a ban across J&K. But the bill was not taken up for discussion or voting in the assembly. BJP, too, has expressed support for the ban, with former J&K party chief Ravinder Raina having led protests on the issue earlier.

HC rejects plea to call Mathura's Shahi Eidgah disputed structure
The Allahabad high court on Friday dismissed an application by Hindu petitioners asking that the Shahi Eidgah mosque in Mathura be referred to as a 'disputed structure' during the legal proceedings on the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah title dispute. The suits filed by Hindu litigants since 2022 seek the removal of the Shahi Eidgah mosque as well as restoration of the temple. (PTI) The controversy is related to the Mughal-era mosque at Mathura, which Hindu groups say was built by emperor Aurangzeb after demolishing a temple at the mythical birthplace of Lord Krishna. The suits filed by Hindu litigants since 2022 seek the removal of the Shahi Eidgah mosque as well as restoration of the temple. The Muslim side has rejected the petitions and said they are barred under the 1991 Places of Worship Act, which freezes the religious character of shrines as they were at the time of independence, barring the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute in Ayodhya. The Hindu petitioners asked the court to direct the stenographer to use word 'disputed structure' in place of order 'Shahi Idgah Mosque' during further proceedings of the suits and other connected matter. The Muslim side said it was an abuse of the process of the law. 'A bare perusal of the pleading of the parties in the suit reveals that there is dispute between the parties with regard to the site where Shahi Masjid Idgah is existing. Parties have claimed their respective title over suit property. Therefore, it may be termed as property in dispute,' said justice Ram Manohar Narain Mishra. 'In pleadings of the parties also, the structure in question is referred as Shahi Masjid Idgah and at this stage, where hearing of the suits is yet to commence and even issues have not been framed, it is neither desirable nor expedient to issue any direction to stenographer, as prayed by the applicants, to refer Shahi Masjid Idgah in judgments and orders as 'disputed structure',' the judge added. 'There is no dispute with regard to identity of property in suit, therefore, the prayer made in the application A-44 cannot be granted at this stage.' Mahendra Pratap Singh, a lawyer from Mathura who moved this application, said that legal experts will be consulted and the order will be analysed. 'We will challenge the order in the Supreme Court after consultation,' said Singh, adding that the order dismissing the application to term the Shahi Eidgah Masjid as a disputed structure will not harm the original suit. Meanwhile, secretary for Shahi Eidgah Masjid management committee and its counsel Tanveer Ahmed welcomed the order and said, 'Justice has been done.' 'Regular namaz is held at the mosque till date and has a separate access. So, there is no dispute. This cannot be called a disputed site,' said Ahmed, adding that the petitioners are wasting the court's time. The Hindu side had submitted that the Shahi Idgah mosque was constructed on the site historically recognised as the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The site holds immense religious significance for Hindus, they argued. But the Muslim side argued that the mosque was in existence for the last 400 years and its existence was sought to be undermined by the present application, which was not permissible under law. Allowing the present application will amount to pre- determination that the Shahi Masjid Idgah is not a mosque at an early stage, the Muslim side said. The religious dispute simmered in the first half of the 20th century but a 1968 agreement calmed tempers. On October 12, 1968, an agreement was signed between the Shri Krishna Janmasthan Seva Sansthan and the Shahi Masjid Idgah Trust, which divided the land between the two parties and relinquished any claims of the Hindu parties to the land of the mosque. But the Hindu side's petition challenged the settlement and alleged that the pact had no legal validity because the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust, which the petitioners claimed had the ownership and title of the land, was not party to the settlement. The Hindi suit claimed that Shahi Eidgah Masjid was constructed on a part of 13.37-acre land belonging to the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust. They demanded the mosque, which abuts the temple, be removed and the land returned to the trust because it is the mythical birthplace of Lord Krishna. The Allahabad high court on December 14, 2023 directed the appointment of a court commissioner to supervise the survey of the mosque premises. However, the Supreme Court on January 16, 2024 stayed implementation of the December 14, 2023 order. The case is part of a decades-old ideological project by Hindu groups that argue that medieval-era Islamic structures were built by demolishing temples and demand rights over those structures. Cases by Hindu groups and individuals in Varanasi and Mathura are currently being adjudicated in courts across Uttar Pradesh, even as a larger issue relating to the Place of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 is being heard by the Supreme Court.

Indore Congress councillor charged under NSA for paying men to lure Hindu girls
A Congress councillor from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Anwar Qadri, has been booked under the National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly masterminding a "love jihad" conspiracy involving financial inducement to trap Hindu case has triggered a major political storm in the state and escalated into a law-and-order issue after three men named Qadri as the person who paid them to target Hindu matter came to light two weeks ago when two men - Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Ali - were arrested by the Indore Police following complaints filed at the Banganga police station. Two Hindu women had alleged that the men concealed their religious identities to establish romantic relationships and then sexually assaulted them. During police interrogation, the two accused reportedly revealed that Congress councillor Anwar Qadri had given them cash incentives - Rs 2 lakh to Sahil and Rs 1 lakh to Altaf - to trap Hindu women, marry them, and convert them to Islam. The arrests and disclosures triggered an immediate political registered a case against Qadri under the Freedom of Religion Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code. However, after evaluating his past criminal record and the seriousness of the accusations, the Indore District Collector approved the application of the National Security Act against also announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 for information leading to Qadri's arrest, as he has been absconding since the FIR was case intensified further on Wednesday when a Hindu organisation apprehended two Muslim youths from separate flats in Indore, reportedly in compromising positions with Hindu girls. One of the youths, a resident of Bhopal, named Anwar Qadri and alleged he had paid him Rs 2 lakh to lure Hindu girls. This marked the third time Qadri was named by an accused in the ongoing Collector Ashish Singh confirmed the imposition of the NSA, citing the grave threat posed to social harmony. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also addressed the matter, saying the Indore Police had been given complete freedom to arrest the absconding councillor. "No one will be spared if found guilty. Law will take its own course," Yadav said in his a sharp political response, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Pro Tem Speaker Rameshwar Sharma demanded that Anwar Qadri be "encountered", alleging that the Congress was harbouring anti-national Additional SP Rajesh Dandotiya confirmed that multiple cases had been registered and investigations were progressing rapidly. He added that action was being taken based on material evidence, and any involvement of elected representatives would not be gravity of the case and repeated accusations linking an elected official to a systematic campaign involving interfaith relationships, religious conversion, and sexual exploitation have raised concerns over communal harmony and law enforcement integrity in the region.- Ends

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], July 5 (ANI): Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan attended the sixth convocation ceremony of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K), Srinagar, and conferred degrees upon the graduates. On the second day of his visit to Jammu & Kashmir on Friday, Shivraj Singh said, 'I've been in Srinagar since yesterday. The cool breeze, the fragrance of the soil, the natural beauty, and the warmth of the people have truly touched my heart. Jammu & Kashmir is the crown jewel of India. Yesterday, we had an in-depth review with the Chief Minister on agriculture and rural development. We held extensive discussions on accelerating Jammu & Kashmir's development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is determined to build a 'Viksit Bharat', and for that, a prosperous Jammu & Kashmir, with its empowered farmers, are essential. We are fully committed to achieving this goal.' Referring to a past meeting of the NITI Aayog, Chouhan told CM Omar Abdullah, 'You had emotionally appealed to ministers to come to Jammu & Kashmir and hold advisory committee meetings. You highlighted how internal conditions are stable and only disturbed by external elements. We accepted your invitation and held the advisory committee meeting yesterday.' Chouhan shared how he interacted with locals across Srinagar and received overwhelming love and affection. 'Even a Shikara boatman on the Dal Lake greeted me warmly. He praised SKUAST-K's accomplishments and expressed confidence that it would soon become the top-ranking state university. He noted that the university hosts students not just from Jammu & Kashmir but from 30 Indian states and Union Territories, as well as from abroad, making it a nationally and internationally recognised institution. Speaking to the graduates, he said, 'Convocation does not mean the end of learning; it marks the beginning of new knowledge. The lessons you've learned in your classrooms and labs must now be shared with society.' He emphasised the irreplaceable value of agriculture, stating that 'without farming, neither Jammu & Kashmir, nor the country, nor the world can function. Agricultural produce cannot be made in factories.' He added, 'Agriculture remains the backbone of the Indian economy and the primary livelihood for over half the population.' Thanking PM Modi, he highlighted that under PM's leadership, India's foodgrain stock has reached record levels, with a 44 per cent increase in foodgrain production over the past 11 years, including record growth in rice, wheat, maize, soybean, and groundnut. Jammu & Kashmir's fruits, flowers, and vegetables are exceptional in taste and colour, he said, and reiterated his vision to make J&K a global horticulture hub. He added that the Holistic Agricultural Development Program (HADP) is being implemented successfully in the region. Discussions were held on providing 'Clean Plants' under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH). Currently, farmers often import planting material from outside the state, which may carry viruses or bacteria. To address this, a decision was made to establish a Clean Plant Center in J&K with a budget of Rs 150 crore. He noted that in 5,000 hectares of apple orchards, per-hectare yield has increased from 10 tonnes to 60 tonnes, a six-fold rise. 'I want to see Kashmiri apples exported globally so that India doesn't need to import apples anymore,' he said. The minister highlighted the Government of India's commitment to protecting farmers' interests under the leadership of PM Modi. He called for more innovation in agriculture, urging students to launch startups and develop advanced technologies in the sector. While praising the university's performance in civil services, he reminded students that true achievement lies in living for others, not just oneself. 'Apply practical knowledge, not just theoretical. Each of you has immense potential, and I'm confident you will do well,' he said. Quoting Swami Vivekananda, Chouhan said, 'Man is a storehouse of infinite strength; there is nothing he cannot achieve.' He encouraged students to set goals, make a roadmap, and work persistently for the greater good. He said both central and state governments are working together to implement these strategies. 'India belongs not only to itself but to the world. This is a land that considers the entire world as one family,' he concluded, calling for collective efforts to advance Jammu & Kashmir and the nation with the guiding mantra: 'Peace, not war; love, not hatred.' He expressed confidence that India would build a stronger global identity and emerge as the world's food basket. At the convocation ceremony, nearly 5,250 students received undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD degrees. Additionally, 150 gold medals and 445 merit certificates were awarded to outstanding students for their academic achievements. The event was graced by Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor of the University Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister and Pro-Chancellor of SKUAST-K Omar Abdullah, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Javed Ahmad Dar, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Chaudhary, Education Minister Sakina Masood, along with vice chancellors, professors, senior officials, and other dignitaries.
