
From Way Back To The Future: Space-Time Ripples Study Heralded

A UC major breakthrough in gravitational physics has been recognised by a top international scientific journal.
Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) second year PhD scholarship student Sebenele (Sebe)Thwala, working with supervisors DrChrisStevens and Prof Jörg Frauendiener, has been modelling how gravitational waves interact across the universe from the distant past to the far future.
Sebe says most simulations cut off the faraway parts of spacetime and make rough guesses about what happens there, which can lead to errors.
'When something dramatic happens in the universe—like two black holes merging—it sends out ripples in the fabric of spacetime called gravitational waves. We detect those ripples here on Earth, but we don't get to see the event directly,' she says.
'To measure energy and momentum accurately, you actually have to look really far away from where the action is happening basically, at an infinite distance. But if we simulate the whole thing properly, from the infinite past to the infinite future, we can avoid mistakes and get a clearer picture. This also helps us understand what happens when a gravitational wave hits a black hole, how much energy the black hole takes in, and how much energy is sent back out as more gravitational waves.'
The research funded through a Marsden Grant is the first time the 'absolute beginning' and 'absolute end' of the process has been incorporated into a single computer simulation.
Physical Review Letters has flagged the 'outstanding' Fully Nonlinear Gravitational Wave Simulations from Past to Future Null Infinity as a 'PRL Editors' Suggestion' – papers judged to be particularly important, interesting and well written.
Originally from Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Sebe completed her Master's degree in South Africa. Around that time New Zealander Chris Stevens was also based in South Africa, and looking for students who might be interested in furthering research on particular gravitational physics topics.
The COVID epidemic got in the way initially, but then she was able to take up the invitation to the University of Canterbury to complete her doctorate.
Now her supervisor, Senior Lecturer in Applied Mathematics Dr Stevens, says getting the paper accepted in Physical Review Letters is a rare feat at any career stage.
'This is an extraordinary milestone for a second-year PhD student, but to also receive the distinction of Editor's Suggestion marks this work as truly exceptional. It reflects not only groundbreaking scientific insight, but also a level of impact, clarity, and originality that stands out internationally over a broad range of fields in physics.
'Achievements of this calibre so early in a research career are exceptionally rare and speak to a scholar of outstanding promise,' he says.
Sebe is not sure what or where her own future lies yet. She would like to complete her doctorate over the next year or so. While her dream would be to continue with post-doctoral research, her mathematical modelling and coding skills could also land her a job in many industries.
'I'm being led by where the opportunities are,' she says.

Fieldays boost farmer innovation despite science reorganisation: Dr Jacqueline Rowarth
Sheep, also flightless, are decreasing 'thanks' to Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) settings favouring pine trees, but also reflecting changes in markets. The field days, at least in the case of the National Fieldays held at Mystery Creek in June (except during the Covid disruptions), go from strength to strength, despite the fog that is common in June in Waikato. The point about field days, whether national, local or on-farm, is that they allow farmer-to-farmer exchange of information, as well as farmer-to-researcher, rural professionals, policymakers and interested urban-dwellers. They also allow researchers, rural professionals and policymakers to interact with each other – and the people who have left the big cities to embrace whatever the field days have on offer. Field days are, to quote an advertisement for a popular car, a real charcuterie of activity and people. It is the charcuterie that stimulates innovation – new thinking about a problem, challenge or issue. Farmers might be there to gather information and kick a few tyres of potential replacement tractors, but the value of the conversation is often to the person listening. Scientists, researchers and developers frequently get their ideas from farmers, saying that they've met a problem or explaining how they overcame that problem. This stimulates the scientist to think about how the problem might be solved or how the solution might be tested more widely. And then they do the research. At least, that is how it has worked in the past. The reorganisations in the science sector won't stop the ideas, but how the 'action' will follow has yet to be decided. Dr Shane Reti, the Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology (coincidentally a good description of what can be seen at National Fieldays), and also the Minister for Universities, inherited the reorganisation in the Cabinet reshuffle at the beginning of the year. Dr Jacqueline Rowarth says farmer innovation defines New Zealand. Reti is clear that the reorganisation aligns with the Government's priorities of driving economic growth and will allow the new organisations to be 'in a better position to deliver excellent science'. 'It will also make sure they're adopting more collaborative ways of working with universities and seeking partnerships with private sector investors, sooner,' he says. The focus is on generating money and it is hardly surprising that the new Science Advisory Panel, chaired by the Prime Minister's new chief science advisor, Dr John Roche, has members with a track record of investment, as well as engineering and science. Comments have been made about the apparent predominance of dairy, but it is the track record of achievement behind current roles that should be examined. Further, New Zealand should be reassured that people who have an interest in the greatest revenue-earning sector are involved in the future of investment. The big question remains whether the investment will be enough to stimulate what is needed. The budget-shuffling indicated an emphasis on commercially viable science, but the quantum of investment is still below what has been urged repeatedly by the science sector. Reti has said: 'Clear direction for the science, innovation and technology sector will give the public and private sector confidence to forge ahead with critical research that will help grow our economy.' This suggests that co-investment is expected from companies and from the levy bodies that support the different sectors in primary production. This is not a new plan. 'User-pays' dominated the thinking in the creation of the Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) in 1992. This was when most of the government funding became contestable. Unintended consequences included bidding for safe science (outcome known) and reduced collaboration (explained in Dr Doug Edmeades' paper Is the Commercial Model Appropriate for Science?). To encourage collaboration, the National Science Challenges (NSCs, 2014-2024) 'brought together the country's top scientists to work collaboratively across disciplines, institutions and borders to achieve their objectives'. Getting going, however, took longer than anticipated because of the cross-party negotiations that had to occur before the collaboration could start. Reti's statement on collaboration for the new system is important. The lessons from the CRIs and the NSCs are the foundation for a better future and, knowing the focus is the primary sector, the National Fieldays are a great place to start talking with the farmers. Along with clouds, kiwi, sheep and, more recently, cows, it is farmer innovation that defines New Zealand, allowing the country to have a first-world economy on the basis of agricultural exports. That is an extraordinary achievement. Whether the future continues in the same vein will depend upon how the science reorganisation plays out and the talks that are held with the primary sector. Farmers continue to be the key.

Sharp jump in Covid-19, respiratory infections

Meanwhile, GPs warn they are already under pressure. After phoning her GP clinic several times last week trying to get an urgent appointment, one desperate Lower Hutt resident decided to go to Lower Hutt After-Hours Medical Centre on Friday. "Google suggested it was busiest from when it opened 5.30pm to 7pm, so I went down at 7pm, and there was a sign up saying they weren't taking any more patients today." Her post on a community Facebook page attracted more than 100 comments, including from many patients who had had the same experience. She returned the next morning as soon as it opened at 8am, and finally got treatment. "The staff do the best they can, and it's not anything to do with the people doing their job. There are just not enough people to go around." Lower Hutt After-Hours Medical Centre was the only walk-in clinic for a population of more than 100,000 people. Manager Mark O'Connor said they treated about 45 patients a night on average, but there were times they had to turn people away. "Especially coming into this time of year with winter, we're just overloaded. We can have 20 or 30 people queuing up at the door at 5.30pm and we'll have three, even four, doctors on at times. But we just can't see everyone." ESR data showed hospitalisations for severe respiratory infections jumped more than 50 percent in the week to 1 June, although the rate remained about the same as last year. Calls to Healthline for influenza-like-illnesses increased, but were lower than at the same time last year. There were five reported outbreaks of respiratory illness: three in aged-care facilities in Nelson-Marlborough, Capital and Coast and Bay of Plenty, and two in early childhood centres, both in the Wellington region. O'Connor said seasonal pressure was compounded by the GP shortage. "Because of some patients not being able to get into their doctor during the day, we're seeing a lot more than just the usual winter type thing. We're seeing a lot more mental health and more other injuries." The clinic was moving to larger premises at the end of next month, and had funding to extend its hours from the end of the year. "We know there is a direct correlation between pressure on EDs and primary care services that are struggling. But EDs are not set up in the same way - it's not there to deal with respiratory illnesses, the more basic but high-volume illnesses that general practice is so well set up for, so that is a challenge." Health NZ was prepared for the inevitable winter surge - lining up extra staff, "optimising" beds and running vaccination campaigns, she said.
