Police launch investigation into the murder of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek

Gauteng police are hunting for suspects following the brutal murder of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek whose body was found just metres from his home.
Jayden-Lee from Fleurhof on the West Rand of Johannesburg, was dropped off by his school transport at the complex where he lives.
According to his mother, who works from home, her son never made it home.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said Jayden-Lee's mother panicked when her son did not enter through the door.
'The mother called neighbours, and they started searching. They notified community leaders, and at 6:40pm, they went to the police station. Our members responded and started searching alongside community members. Early in the morning, a resident walking out of her flat at about 6.25am saw the child not lying far from the flat where he resided,' Masondo said.
The young boy's body was found on the steps of the second-floor.
According to reports, his body was still warm and clean. He had no blood on him, but visible abrasions could be seen, indicating a possible assault.
When relatives were notified, Jayden-Lee was rushed to hospital, however, he was declared dead on arrival.

Police have urged the community to await the post-mortem report to get a definite cause of death.
'For now, we have opened an inquest. We have started with our investigation at our provincial offices, and we have assembled a team of seasoned detectives who will be taking over the investigation. As for now, we do not have any suspects,' Masondo said.
Masondo also emphasised that while the open investigation may only be an inquest at this stage, it could be changed to a murder docket as the investigation unravels.
'Once we have enough evidence that the child was murdered, we will change the investigation into a murder docket,' Masondo said.
Lack of police assistance
Family members speaking to the media said they have struggled to get police to take this matter seriously and claimed the crime scene, where Jayden-Lee's body was found, was not cordoned off and was contaminated with people walking around.
'The police don't want to search the units. They don't want to go door to door to check if there is evidence in one of the units. We have been fighting with them. They brought the K9 unit, they only went twice. We had to go ask for information, they don't tell the family,' a relative said.
The family urged police to make an arrest and believed he could have been saved if police had searched on Tuesday night.
Illitha Labantu, a social service and education organisation that focuses on addressing violence against women and children, has condemned this incident in the strongest terms.
'Ilitha Labantu expresses its deep sorrow and outrage at the tragic death of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek. As an organisation that has championed the rights and dignity of women and children for over 36 years, we condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the horrifying loss of yet another young life to senseless violence,' spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali said.
'This incident is not just a singular tragedy, it is a sobering reflection of the broader failure of our society to protect its children. The fact that a child could go missing in his own community, only to be later found dead within the very space meant to offer shelter and security, is deeply troubling. It begs urgent questions about community safety, the responsiveness of law enforcement, and the societal structures meant to safeguard children from harm,' Monakali said.
He said the anger expressed by Fleurhod residents was understandable and justified.
'Too often, communities are left to grapple with the aftermath of violence on their own, while the systemic failures that allow such tragedies to occur remain unaddressed. It is unacceptable that children continue to fall victim to violence in environments where they should be protected, nurtured, and allowed to thrive,' Monakali added.

Earlier on Thursday, IOL, quoting Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, reported that the teenager was given a lift by strangers. The incident is said to have occurred in Lydenburg on Sunday, at approximately 4pm. Rafadi told IOL that at times, criminals go around looking for people who are hitchhiking, and give them lifts. "One of the dangerous issues about hitchhiking is that women and girls get sexually assaulted. The hitchhiking spots are places where some of the perpetrators spot their victims, they just drive around and identify these hotspots where people gather to hitchhike. They pick women and girls, and rape them. In some instances, they pick different people and abuse them," said Rafadi. "Even if you do not have money, they will force you to start borrowing money from your contacts, your family and friends. In the first incident, a 55-year-old man who was hitch-hiking was given a lift in a Suzuki Swift vehicle near the Mall of the North in Polokwane. The 55-year-old man was travelling to Ga-Dikgale. 'It is alleged that three unknown suspects (the occupants of the car) took the wrong direction, stopped, produced pistols and a knife, and robbed him of all his belongings such as a cellphone, wallet with cash worth R400, and bank cards, all valued at R5,400 and ordered him to run into the bushes,' provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said at the time. The robbers then drove off with the man's possessions.

Image: Supplied The Pietermaritzburg High Court has ordered that an independent investigation should be instituted to probe allegations of mistreatment, including the alleged sexual violence of learners at a KwaZulu-Natal-based school for the blind and visually impaired. This was after the court ruled that a curator ad litem should be appointed to investigate the allegations at Arthur Blaxall School for the Blind. The case was brought by Blind SA last year, following allegations that were made in 2018. Blind SA, in its application claimed the original investigation into the allegations against the school was inadequate. No one was criminally charged and prosecuted after the school and the provincial education department concluded their initial investigation. The Department of Education attempted to oppose the application on the basis that the issues raised had been addressed, saying a new investigation would disrupt the school's operation. The curator is expected to compile a detailed report and submit recommendations to the court by September 30. It will also investigate allegations of poor quality of food and living conditions, as well as the school programmes. KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson for education, Muzi Mahlambi and his colleague, Mlu Mtshali, did not respond to messages and calls. Elijah Mhlanga, the spokesperson for the Department of Education, requested a copy of the court papers but did not respond to queries. Blind SA, which was represented by the Equal Education Law Centre (EELC), said the situation at the school reflects a broader, systemic failure in the provision of safe and dignified hostel conditions for learners with disabilities across South Africa. 'We welcome the High Court's order as an important step toward accountability and systemic reform for learners with disabilities at school hostels. Through the appointment of an independent curator, we hope that meaningful, evidence-based recommendations will emerge to drive urgent improvements at Arthur Blaxall and beyond. Learners with disabilities deserve to access education in environments that respect and uphold their dignity and rights,' Blind SA said in a statement. Blind SA chief executive officer, Jace Nair, added this will enable the curator to engage with stakeholders, including learners, staff, education officials and the community to probe the concerns and "propose effective lasting recommendations that will address the systemic changes required to prevent abuse and negligence and promote a human rights-based approach for equitable and quality education for blind and partially sighted learners". The court added that the person who would be nominated should have at least 10 years of relevant experience.

John Hlophe challenges court ruling on JSC participation

Reacting to the decision during the party's media briefing on Tuesday, Hlophe in isiZulu, said 'Ngeke sidlale amajaji la sizodlulisa isinqumo (We are going to appeal the decision).' On Monday, the court set aside a decision by the National Assembly (NA) made in July last year to endorse the recommendation of the MK Party to have him serve as one of its six parliamentarians. Next Stay Close ✕ The JSC was due to conduct interviews for the vacant positions of judges, however, the DA, Freedom Under Law, and Corruption Watch filed an urgent interdict to prevent Hlophe from sitting in the interviews. The court granted an interdict. The matter was heard in February by a full bench of judges from outside the division, after the court previously granted an interdict in favour of the DA, Freedom Under Law, and Corruption Watch, preventing Hlophe from participating in the work of the commission pending this matter. The court said the NA had fundamentally misunderstood the nature of its powers to designate members to serve on the body that interviews candidates to become judges. It added that this seriously threatens the independence of the judiciary and his presence on the JSC would prejudice the commission's ability to do its work. 'Through the impeachment of Dr Hlophe, the National Assembly has effectively already determined that his continued involvement in judicial affairs would diminish public trust,' said the court. It said that by Hlophe trying to appeal this judgment in the first part of this case, he has shown disregard for the authority and integrity of the courts. For this reason, it made an order that a judge removed for gross misconduct may never serve on the JSC. In 2021, the Judicial Conduct Tribunal (JCT) found that Hlophe's conduct breached the provisions of Section 165 of the Constitution and his conduct threatened and interfered with the independence, impartiality of the Constitutional Court. Acting on the recommendations of the JCT, the JSC found Hlophe guilty of attempting to influence two justices of the Constitutional Court to violate their oaths of office to rule in favour of former Jacob Zuma in his arms deal case in 2008. The matter was then referred to the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services, which then recommended to the National Assembly to impeach Hlophe. This was eventually approved by Parliament through a vote last year. This meant that Hlophe was stripped of his lifetime title as a judge as well as other perks including lifetime salary. Cape Argus
