Boca fans turn Miami Beach into Boca Beach ahead of Club World Cup start

MIAMI BEACH, Florida, June 15 - More than a thousand Boca Juniors fans turned a slice of Miami's coastline into 'Boca Beach' on Sunday, draping the shores of Bark Beach in blue and yellow on the eve of their team's Club World Cup debut. With drums pounding and chants echoing over the white sand, supporters grilled meat, waved flags and drank 'fernet con coca' — the bitter Argentine aperitif mixed with cola — as bemused Floridians looked on during their usual Sunday dip. Beer flowed for hours under the Florida sun, with police observing calmly from a distance. Several dozen fans made their way from downtown Miami to join the seaside celebration, bringing more banners and unmistakable Argentine energy. The colourful display injected a much-needed dose of passion into the newly expanded Club World Cup, giving the tournament a proper World Cup atmosphere amid concerns that fans might turn their backs on the revamped format. Some 61,000 fans, however, filled the Hard Rock stadium for the opening game on Saturday as Lionel Messi's Inter Miami played African giants Al-Ahly. More than 80,000 attended Champions League winners Paris St Germain's 4-0 drubbing of Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl on Sunday. 'Wherever you go, Boca is here,' Gaston San Paul, a Boca fan who flew in from Entre Rios, Argentina, told Reuters. 'Wherever we are we do this,' he added, referring to the 'Banderazo', a fan gathering destined to mark territory ahead of a game. Boca Juniors will face Portuguese side Benfica on Monday at the Hard Rock Stadium in their opening match of the 32-team competition, which is being staged in the United States for the first time.

Rangers do just enough to sweep series against hapless White Sox

June 15 - Ezequiel Duran and Marcus Semien drove in runs to back the pitching of Kumar Rocker and three relievers as the Texas Rangers did just enough to beat the reeling Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers swept the series and won their fourth straight game and seventh in their past eight outings while Chicago dropped their fifth consecutive contest. Three of those losses by the White Sox were by one run and another was by two. Rocker (2-4) drew the start for Texas after being activated by the team earlier Sunday to take the roster spot of Tyler Mahle, who went on the injured list retroactive to June 12 with right shoulder fatigue. Rocker went five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk and striking out six despite battling dehydration in the fifth inning. He posted his first win since April 17, a stint covering three Major League starts. Both Jacob Webb (one run on two hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings) and Cole Winn (two hits in 1 2/3 innings) had to work out of trouble in the sixth, seven and eighth innings to keep Texas on top. Luke Jackson struck out one in a perfect ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season. Aaron Civale (1-3), who was acquired by the White Sox on Friday in a trade with Milwaukee, gave up two runs on six hits and four walks over five innings while striking out four. The Rangers jumped to the lead in the second inning when Duran's two-out double drove home Adolis Garcia, who had walked. Texas added to its advantage in the fifth. Josh Smith singled and went to third on Corey Seager's single and a fielding error by the White Sox's Andrew Benintendi. Smith then scored on a sacrifice fly by Semien but Civale was able to pitch his way out of trouble by striking out Jake Burger with runners on second and third. Miguel Vargas trimmed the Chicago deficit to one run with a solo home run in the sixth off Webb. The White Sox stranded runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings and went 1 for 9 with runners on second or third in Sunday's loss. --Field Level Media

Double steal in tenth leads to Cubs walk-off of Pirates

June 15 - Ian Happ drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 win and take the series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Automatic runner Vidal Brujan and Kyle Tucker pulled off a double steal with Jon Berti at the plate, and then Happ knocked a single into right field off reliever David Bednar (1-5), scoring Brujan. Reliever Chris Flexen (4-0) was perfect in the top of the 10th for the win. Starting pitcher Colin Rea allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four in six innings for the Cubs, who won three of the four-game set. The Pirates have lost consecutive games for the first time since June 1-3. Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the first inning. Oneil Cruz led off with a single to right, went to second on a base hit from Nick Gonzales, and scored when Spencer Horwitz connected for a one-out single. Gonzales made it to third on Horwitz's hit and came around to make it 2-0 on Alexander Canario's ground-out. Chicago responded in the bottom half of the frame. Happ drew a lead-off walk, stole second, and went to third on Pete Crow-Armstrong's ground-out. He crossed the plate when Seiya Suzuki followed with another groundball out. Michael Busch knocked a fly ball down the left field line for a ground rule double and Dansby Swanson drove him in with a single to right field to tie it 2-2. After facing six batters each in the first, Rea and Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller settled down and were efficient through the next five innings. Busch hit a two-out single in the third, the only hit for either side among a combined 27 batters until Horwitz singled to center in the sixth. Keller gave up two runs on three hits and fanned three in six innings. Horwitz had two of Pittsburgh's four hits. Busch and Swanson each collected a pair of hits as the Cubs managed only six in total. --Field Level Media
