‘Don't stress if you don't know': A rock star's guide to the HSC
He also knows that if he had forced himself into studying HSC subjects he didn't like to chase an ATAR he didn't particularly want, his rock-star dream may have never become a reality.
'I studied to the best of my ability, but I lived in a place of distraction. I could go fishing, I could go swimming, I could take off on a motorboat. I spent a lot of time looking out the window,' he said, recalling his HSC class of 1975 at The Forest High School on the northern beaches.
This was also the same year the Herald 's first HSC Study Guide was produced. The 50th anniversary edition of the guide, in partnership with the NSW Education Standards Authority, is launched on Monday and is designed to support the 80,000 plus students sitting the HSC exams later this year.
Meanwhile Pengilly said by the time he was in year 12 he knew his life plan: a career in music.
And what a career. Over 40 years, INXS became one of Australia's most successful rock bands. With more than 70 million records sold worldwide and more than 4 billion career streams, they have won seven MTV Awards, three Grammy nominations, Brit Awards and hundreds of platinum, gold and now two diamond awards from Canada and Australia.
The band, comprising friends from school, first performed locally as The Farriss Brothers in 1977. Michael Hutchence (vocals), Pengilly (guitar/sax), Garry Gary Beers (bass), Jon Farriss (drums), Tim Farriss (guitar) and Andrew Farriss (guitar, keyboard, percussion) won Australian fans and then international acclaim, touring and performing for millions around the world, including the historic sell-out 1991 performance for 74,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
'[When I hear our music in] the supermarket, it's a mixture of pride and hide. I get approached by people everywhere I go, which is lovely, but I find it a bit awkward in a supermarket when one of our songs is playing,' he has noted.
'In stark contrast, hearing a massive audience sing along is breathtaking – such a powerful energy.'
Meanwhile, Pengilly said it was important to do 'what you love' and, for all the HSC pressure and stress, the reality is that life goes on after the HSC.

'You need to ask yourself what you love in life and what you love doing,' he said. 'If you can uncover that and get to the bottom of what it is you love, the things you do, then you can see how you can make a job connected to the things you love doing.
'It's not healthy to be doing something you do not enjoy and don't want to be doing.
'Certainly don't stress if you don't know [what you want to do] at the end of your HSC. Enjoy life and it will come to you. Your niche in the world will come when it is ready.'

Fans in a frenzy at possibility Tomorrowland could come to Australia in 2026
Eagle-eyed fans believe Tomorrowland, or at least an offshoot of the world-famous electronic dance music festival, is Australia-bound for the first time in 2026. Attendees walking towards the CORE stage at this year's festival in Belgium over the weekend spotted a map installation that looked to be teasing upcoming locations. Among them was Melbourne, which appeared as a potential host in November 2026. A video of the map was shared on TikTok, where it has racked up more than 120,000 likes. Many believe at the very least Tomorrowland's CORE stage is on its way as part of a boutique event series. 'I wanna go so freaking bad,' one person said. If it does pan out that way, it would mark the bucket-list festival's Australian debut. If must be said that there is no confirmation at this stage. has reached out to Tomorrowland representatives for details but are yet to hear back. The TikTok video also suggested a festival could be held in Los Angeles in May 2026. Tomorrowland is held annually in Boom, Belgium, attracting 400,000 festivalgoers from around the world. It was first held in 2005 and has grown to become one of the world's biggest music festivals. Just two days before the 2025 event was due to start, a raging fire destroyed the famous main stage. But heavy metal band Metallica came to the rescue, reportedly offering up some of their world tour stage equipment that was in storage to ensure the show could go on. Tomorrowland spin-off festivals have previously been held in the US, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

The Potbelleez to play in Busselton for first time with intimate Hally's Bar gig
Australian music trio The Potbelleez will be heading to Busselton for the first time in their 20-year career for a more intimate than usual, but still large, show. The group — known for their hits Don't Hold Back and Are You With Me — will be heading to Hally's Bar on August 1, where an audience of 500 people can enjoy a night of electro-house and dance music. Founding member Jonny Sonic said the trio couldn't wait to make their debut in the South West town. 'It's our first time in Busselton and it's very rare for us to have a first time these days, because we pretty much played every nook and cranny in Australia,' he said. 'It's always good to see a new one.' Sonic said with the gig being capped at 500 people, he expected the show to be more engaging for them. 'You can see people in the eye and you can feed off the energy a lot quicker than at a festival,' he said. 'People just get go absolutely bonkers and they feel part of the show. 'When we play a smaller venue, they always feel like they're at a festival because of the grandeur of the show that we put on. It's a very big style of music with a very big sound.' Sonic's message to the locals was to 'put your dancing shoes on, don't be arrogant, treat everybody well on the dance floor, put your phones down and enjoy the night'. Venue manager Peter Davies said the crew were excited to welcome the trio. 'It's going to just be a party of fun. They're going to be playing all their hits, which are many,' he said. Davies reached out to the band, having known them since 2008, and asked Sonic if they wanted to do a show in the South West town. He thought he would be organising the event for a different, larger local venue but was happy to hear the trio wanted to play in their smaller venue. '(Sonic) said 'let's do an intimate gig piece. Former Ready Steady Cook host Peter Everett has been charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy. Mr Everett, 66, has been charged with sexually touching another person without consent after he was arrested at his Toukley home on NSW's Central Coast on July 26. An investigation into the alleged assault of a teenager was started on July 25, and Mr Everett was arrested the following day, police said. "Following extensive inquiries, about 1.30pm today, police arrested a 66-year-old man at a home at Toukley," NSW Police said in a statement.
