‘Certain clubs have unique privilege' – Crystal Palace release furious statement after Conference League demotion
CRYSTAL PALACE have released a furious statement in the wake of their Europa League demotion.
The statement read: "At a time when we should be celebrating our victory in the Community Shield at Wembley, the decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless.

"When we won the FA Cup against Manchester City on that momentous day in May, our manager and players earned the right to play Europa League football.
"We have been denied that opportunity.
"It appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power.
"This growing and unhealthy influence has shattered the hopes and dreams of Crystal Palace supporters, and does not bode well for aspirational teams all over Europe competing to progress when rules and sanctions are unevenly applied in the most flagrant way.
"Multi-club structures hide behind the charade of a 'blind trust' while clubs such as ours, who have no connection to another club whatsoever, are prevented from playing in the same competition.
"To compound the injustice, clubs that appear to have huge informal arrangements with each other are also allowed to participate and even possibly play against each other.
"While we respect the CAS tribunal members, the process is designed to severely restrict and, in our case, make it almost impossible to receive a fair hearing.
"The denial of all disclosure requests to obtain correspondence between the relevant parties, the refusal to allow witness testimony from those involved, and the general lack of formality and respect for law mean decisions cannot be properly challenged, leading to pre-determined outcomes.
"UEFA's decision has wider implications for the governance of the sport. A combination of poorly conceived regulations and their unequal application means our brilliant fans will be deprived of the chance to watch this team compete in the Europa League for the first time in our history.
"This should be a turning point for football.
"UEFA must fulfil its mandate to pass coherent rules which are properly communicated and applied, with reasonable cure periods to resolve uncertainty and consistent sanctions, treating all clubs equally with a proper appeal process.
"The European Court of Justice has made it clear that rulings similar to this will be under greater scrutiny from national courts in future. Only then will fairness and due process be granted to every team.
"Although we continue to take legal advice on the next steps, we will compete in the Conference League with the same determination and will to win that characterises this incredible club."

Man Utd's misery, Keith Andrews' big test and the Man City question – Premier League talking points
Van Dijk will lead Liverpool into action in today's Community Shield final against Crystal Palace at Wembley and if the storylines set to unfold over the next 10 months are as unpredictable as they were last season, we are in for a wonderful journey. The prospect of Liverpool winning the title following Jurgen Klopp's exit last summer seemed fanciful this time last year, while a combination of Newcastle and Crystal Palace winning the domestic cup competitions in England was an even more improbable scenario. After a summer of lavish spending by England's top clubs, the pressure is set to be ramped up in the race for the big prizes. Here are five bold predictions for the new season. Ruben Amorim has his work cut out at Manchester United. Photo: Andrew J Clark/Getty Ruben Amorim looked like a manager eager to be put out of his misery in the final weeks of last season having been quickly pushed to the edge by a toxic culture at Manchester United that has broken a succession of the club's former managers. The summer signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were Amorim's first attempt to change a depressing script at United, but so many of the cast list who have led this great club down a spiral of decline are still on the squad list a week before the start of the new season. Amorim has suggested he has seen a change of attitude during United's pre-season games, but the panic button will be pressed if they are beaten by Arsenal at Old Trafford in their opening game next Sunday and they also have games against Manchester City and Chelsea in the first month of the season. Verdict: After a 15th-place finish last season, it may seem as if things can only get better, yet this club is failing on and off the field, so Amorim will do well to see out his first full season as United boss. Keith Andrews will have to hit the ground running in his new role as Brentford manager or face the consequences. Photo: PA Thomas Frank built Brentford into a stable Premier League outfit and his move to Tottenham has left a huge void at the London club, with the appointment of former Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews greeted with a degree of pessimism in the English media. Sacked Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was a leading contender for the role and is believed to have spoken to Brentford about the role, but Andrews got the nod and his lack of frontline managerial experience may be a primary reason why he has been installed as the bookies' favourite to be the first Premier League manager sacked this season. Brentford have lost some key players this summer and Andrews faces a big task to maintain the momentum Frank built up, with a slow start likely to pile the pressure on the Dubliner. Verdict: If Brentford are flirting with relegation by Christmas, he may find himself replaced by a more experienced operator. Jack Grealish would be a welcome addition to Everton's ranks. Photo: Neal Simpson/Getty Everton's move to their sparkling new stadium will be a momentous moment for the club, but manager David Moyes has admitted his summer transfer plans have reached a worrying impasse. Moyes has suggested he is looking to sign 'five or six players' before the transfer window slams shut after admitting they have issues around depth of squad as well as the quality he is working with. Everton released five senior players, including striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure after their contracts expired this summer, and Moyes appeared to be sending a message to his owners when he suggested he was 'desperate' for new signings in a brutally honest press briefing last week. Verdict: Jack Grealish has been linked with a move to Everton and a signing of that quality would lift the mood as right now, alarm bells are ringing. Manchester City were charged with 115 breaches of the game's financial fair play rules in February 2023 and the delay in concluding their case has created a worrying cloud over the game. City could be handed a big points penalty, a transfer embargo or a record-breaking fine if they are found guilty and there have been suggestions in recent weeks that they may be prepared to thrash out some sort of a deal with the Premier League to resolve the case. That needs to happen, as every Man City trophy lift will be tainted by the never-ending suspicion that they have broken the rules to achieve their success in recent years. Even if they are found guilty of a handful of charges, the points deductions handed to Everton and Nottingham Forest for financial breaches suggest a similar punishment may be coming City's way. Verdict: A heavy points penalty for City will end their title hopes for the season, with manager Pep Guardiola suggesting he will walk away from his role if the club have broken the rules. This could be the biggest story of the season when it is finally resolved. Caoimhín Kelleher has joined forces with Republic of Ireland teammate Nathan Collins at Brentford this season. Photo: David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile This looks set to be a summer when spending records will be shattered by Premier League clubs, but who has made the best moves? Liverpool shattered their transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz and while the German international may need some time to adapt to the pace of the Premier League, this 22-year-old is too good to fail at Anfield. Hugo Ekitike has more to prove as he needs to confirm he can be a game-changer in the Premier League following his move from Eintracht Frankfurt, and the same is true of Arsenal's big summer signing, the Swede Victor Gyokeres. The Gunners may have won the 2023/24 title if they had a striker who could finish off the chances they were missing and they hope Gyokeres will provide the solution, but he faces a big step up in class to shine in the Premier League. Ireland's No 1 Caoimhín Kelleher is also preparing to take on a big challenge this season as he looks to prove he can shine as a first choice goalkeeper following his big-money move to Brentford. Verdict: Wirtz will light up the Premier League, but Gyokeres may not be the instant hit Arsenal need him to be. That will pile pressure on manager Mikel Arteta, who needs to win silverware this season.

Shels v Linfield's multi-million euro tie to be shown live on terrestrial TV
Shelbourne's latest European clash with Linfield will be shown live by RTÉ next week as the Reds look to make the Europa League Conference group stages for the first time. Joey O'Brien's side lost out to Rijeka in their Europa League third qualifying round tie this week, when the Croatian champions overturned a 2-1 first leg deficit to win 3-1 at Tolka Park on Wednesday. But Shels will be back in European action at their Drumcondra home next Thursday for the first leg of their Conference League play-off with Linfield. The sides met in the Champions League first qualifying round last month, with Shels' 1-0 home victory giving O'Brien's side the edge before the sides played out a 1-1 draw at Windsor Park the following week. Linfield's midweek victory over Vikingur means that the Irish clubs will meet again - this time with almost €4m on the line. RTÉ came under fire for not showing Shels' second leg against Rijeka but the national broadcaster will show the first leg on RTÉ 2 and on the RTÉ Player next week No decision has been announced as yet about the second leg but discussions will also centre on any deal Linfield do with BBC Northern Ireland.
