Union Saint-Gilloise wins first Belgian league title in 90 years
Promise David scored twice and Franjo Ivanovic added another goal to help the small Brussels club secure its first league title since 1935.
Union entered the final round of the championship playoffs with a one-point lead and after near misses in the past three seasons.
In 2022 and in 2024 Union led the regular season standings then faded in the playoffs to let Club Brugge take the title. The epic 2023 title race had a dramatic ending when a helicopter carrying league officials and the trophy had to turn away from Union's tiny Joseph Marien Stadium.
Only Union and Brugge were in title contention on Sunday. Brugge drew 1-1 with Antwerp to finish in second place, three points behind.

Union had a slow start to the season under new coach Pocognoli, after more sales of star players for eight-figure fees. Led by goals from David, Union moved up to third in the regular season standings.
This time, Genk was the leader that collapsed in the playoffs. Union surged with a run of five clean sheets, including a 1-0 win at Brugge on April 24, to go top for the first time.

Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Mansukh Mandaviya gave a clarion call to all citizens to adopt an active lifestyle by participating in the FIT India Sundays on Cycle initiative from his home village Hanol in Palitana, Gujarat. Started by the Sports Minister in December 2024, the cycling initiative has been organised across more than 46,000 locations till now with an overall participation of 8 lakh-plus individuals. Continuing its mission to build a healthier, pollution-free India, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, organised a special edition of 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' today in partnership with the National Cadet Corps across 5000 locations nationwide. Around 3000 Namo Fit India Clubs also participated in the event. Dr Mandaviya urged fellow villagers, men and women, to download the FIT India mobile app and utilise the carbon credit feature. 'I would urge everyone to download the FIT India mobile app and check how much carbon is being saved by cycling to work or going around the village. The app has been developed as such that it gives you all information about your health from the distance and time taken to the heart rate etc., beneficial to monitor one's health. Cycling is a great tool for fighting obesity and a solution to pollution. I would ask everyone to become part of our Fit India Sundays on Cycle movement,' Dr Mandaviya said in Hanol. In Delhi, the 1200-plus enthusiastic cyclists rode around the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and enjoyed participating in Zumba, meditation and yoga sessions besides rope skipping activity organised by Dr Shikha Gupta. Further, fencers Naziya Shaik and Beni Quebha pledged their support for the cycling movement saying that it is spreading much-needed awareness in Tier 1 and Tier 2/3 cities about the bad effects of obesity and air pollution. 'This is my first experience of cycling with such a huge crowd. I am very happy to be part of it. Fit India Sundays on Cycle is a great initiative to make people aware about lifestyle diseases like obesity, and sir pollution. It was so nice to see people enjoying different physical activities from Zumba, yoga, rope skipping to badminton, net cricket etc at one place. The morning began with high energy and the message was clear to everyone that we have to adopt an active lifestyle to remain fit and healthy,' said Beni Quebha, a National Games medallist in fencing. Meanwhile, more than 100 riders from the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) actively participated in the Fit India Sundays on Cycles at the Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW). The event was organised in conjunction with the Indian Railway's cycling training camp currently being held at PLW. This successful event not only promoted physical fitness but also reflected RSPB's unwavering commitment to encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle among its athletes and employees. The 'Fit India Sundays on Cycle' is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Raahgiri Foundation, My Bikes and MY Bharat. The cycling drive is organised simultaneously in capitals of all States and Union Territories besides SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), SAI Training Centres (STCs), Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs) and Khelo India centres (KICs) across various age groups.

David Coote's EPL Return 'Very Difficult' After Ban For Comments On Jurgen Klopp, Says Howard Webb
The controversial referee had gone on an abusive rant against the former Liverpool boss and was suspended in November 2024 for an aggravated breach of the FA guidelines. Former referee Howard Webb has given a strong verdict against David Coote, claiming the disgraced referee would find it extremely difficult to come back to the list of English Premier League officials. Webb even raised doubts about Coote ever officiating at the elite level again after he was handed a suspension for making derogatory comments about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. In a video filmed during lockdown and leaked online in November 2024, Coote had gone on an abusive rant against Klopp and was criticised widely, before being suspended for an 'aggravated breach" of Football Association guidelines. Even though the referee expressed 'deep remorse" and accepted that his remarks on the German tactician were 'crass and inappropriate", he was barred from officiating in matches. In a double whammy, Coote was then also sacked from the Premier League referees' body, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), when another controversial video caught the body's attention, where he appears to be sniffing white powder during Euro 2024. UEFA banned Coote from referee duties at European competitions in February for a suspension period lasting until June 30, 2026. 'I think it'd be really difficult for David to come back, I'm afraid to say," said Webb, as quoted by The Guardian. 'He is somebody that we stay in contact with, somebody who was part of our refereeing family for a long time and served the game as well for a long period of time and I've known him personally for many years. So it's sad what happened with David, but I would think it would be a challenging thing for him to come back." 'It became apparent that David had made some bad choices away from the football field. He was an employee of ours. So obviously we had to care for him and we had to try to understand why he made some of those choices and where they connected to the job that he had. 'We spoke to all of our officials as well other officials and said: 'How are you feeling about all of this?' And there was some feedback that came back from them about the support that they think they need.
