Clerk pocketed more than S$38,000 from recycling firm to donate to 'Chinese idols' on Douyin

CNA6 days ago
SINGAPORE: A 20-year-old woman was given four months' jail on Thursday (Jul 10) for pocketing more than S$38,000 (US$29,700) from a recycling firm.
She initially lied that she had taken the money to repay her father's debt, but later admitted that she had donated the cash to "Chinese idols" on the Douyin online streaming platform.
Malaysian Chew Yu En pleaded guilty to one count of dishonest misappropriation by an employee. A second charge of making false entries on payment vouchers was taken into consideration.
The court heard that Chew and her family lived in Malaysia before June 2024. Her only family member who lived in Singapore was her uncle, a permanent resident.
In June 2024, Chew began work as a clerk at Sin Le Heng Recycling, earning a monthly salary of S$2,300. She stayed in Singapore on a work permit, living with her boyfriend in a rented room, the prosecutor said.
Sin Le Heng bought materials for recycling from various customers. Those who wanted to sell items would go to the company's warehouse to have them weighed.
Warehouse staff would collect the items and issue a note specifying the weight and quantity.
The customer would then head to a counter to collect payment and receive a payment voucher issued by a clerk. After the customer signs the voucher, the clerk would pay the customer the amount in cash.
In her role as a clerk, Chew was entrusted with the company's petty cash, which was kept in a box at her counter in the office.
She would pay customers for the items they sold using the petty cash. If the petty cash was running low, she would inform her boss about it, and he would top it up by handing the money to her personally or placing it in the box after office hours.
Sometime before Dec 2, 2024, Chew's direct supervisor went overseas. This meant that Chew was often the only one in the office.
Over 42 occasions from Dec 2, 2024 and Jan 9, 2025, Chew took a total of S$38,315.30 in petty cash from the box.
She began with smaller amounts like S$198 and S$65.50 and increased this to over a thousand dollars. The largest single amount she took, according to court documents, was S$2,782.50 on Christmas Eve last year.
To evade detection, Chew wrote false payment vouchers detailing fictitious purchases and signed them herself before pocketing the corresponding cash amounts.
On two occasions, she did make payments to customers for genuine purchases, but also misappropriated the same cash amounts using the genuine payment vouchers.
A director of the company noticed discrepancies in the records on Jan 8 this year.
He confronted Chew about this the next day, and Chew admitted that she had been misappropriating the company's petty cash.
Her supervisor called the police that same day, and they arrested Chew.
Chew initially lied that she had taken the cash to repay her father's debt. However, she later admitted that she had donated the money to unspecified Chinese idols on Douyin.
She made no restitution.
The prosecutor sought four to six months' jail, citing similar past cases.
Chew was unrepresented. She initially tried to adjourn the case, saying she wanted to leave the country.
The judge then told her he was unlikely to grant her application to leave jurisdiction, and the plea was taken but the sentence deferred.

Sarawak man survives crocodile attack by poking its eyes to escape

Photo: Freepik/kuritafsheen77 (for illustration purposes only) SINGAPORE: A 39-year-old man in Sarawak narrowly escaped death after being attacked by a crocodile while fishing with his family in a lake in Marudi. According to the Malay Mail, Dennis Karon was fishing with his brother and other villagers on Sunday morning (Jul 13), when the incident occurred. The group had crossed the lake by boat to fish and later stopped to have a meal on the shore. At around 10 a.m., they noticed bubbles on the water's surface and initially believed they were caused by schools of fish. Dennis' niece recounted that when Dennis cast a net toward the bubbles, it became entangled. He and his brother jumped into the lake to free it. Moments later, his brother resurfaced, but Dennis was missing. The group immediately became alarmed, boarded the boat again, and began slapping the hull to create noise. Soon, they saw Dennis struggling to rise to the surface in the middle of the lake and realised that he had been seized by a crocodile. At 4:38 p.m., the Sarawak Civil Defence Force received an emergency call and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the village. They located Dennis at the ferry terminal and rushed him to the hospital for treatment. Dennis' niece added that this was not the first time villagers had encountered such danger. She said there have been three reported cases of crocodile attacks in the area, and in each case, the victims survived by targeting the crocodile's eyes. AMK residents forced to use stairs thanks to persistent lift urination issue that remains unresolved despite complaints

SINGAPORE: A foul-smelling and persistent issue at Block 223 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 has left residents frustrated and some choosing to avoid the lift altogether. Residents say the lift at Block C has frequently reeked of urine and that the issue remains unresolved despite multiple complaints. Mike, a resident who moved into the block in January last year, told Channel 8 that he often encounters urine stains in the lift, and the stench has become part of daily life for those living in the block. 'It's very uncomfortable,' he said, 'I've been reporting this through the OneService app since August last year. I even contacted the town council via Facebook, but the problem still hasn't been solved.' According to Mike, while cleaners do remove the mess when reported, the urination continues to recur. 'The town council said it would investigate, but it has not solved the problem yet. After the cleaners cleaned it up, the problem continued to happen. I think it is only treating the symptoms and not the root cause,' he said. Mike shared that some residents have resorted to using the stairs whenever they spot urine in the lift, 'Residents here say they've complained many times, but nothing has happened. Everyone is very angry. If I see urine, I won't take it because it smells bad and is unhygienic.' He also believes the culprit is likely an adult, 'There are residents here who have pets. We all know each other. Everyone brings their pets downstairs to relieve themselves, and every time there is a large pool of urine, which doesn't look like it belongs to pets or children.' Other residents backed up Mike's concerns, with some recalling seeing what they believed to be urine stains regularly in the elevator — and in at least one past instance, even faeces. When a Channel 8 reporter visited the block on Tuesday (Jul 15), there were visible water-like stains in the lift. A sign inside urged people not to urinate in public areas. See also Domestic worker accused of abusing elderly woman in wheelchair Mr Deng, 58, a long-time resident who has lived there for 13 years, told the reporter that he had raised the same issue two years ago through the OneService platform. According to him, the town council made an effort to identify the culprit, but he never heard any updates after that. 'Urine stains can appear at any time, and the cleaners are slow to respond. Sometimes they're still there after hours,' he said, 'Some kind neighbours will lay newspaper down to cover it, but that just makes the area dirtier in my opinion.' Mr Deng added that the problem poses a serious risk to elderly residents, 'This puddle of water is unsafe for residents. It makes the floor slippery; you have to walk sideways and stuff like that. Some of the elderly here are in wheelchairs or on crutches. The urine contaminates their wheelchairs and crutches, and they bring it home. It's unhygienic.' Another resident, who declined to be named, expressed similar concerns, especially for young children. He told the Channel 8 reporter, 'I have kids at home and sometimes push them in a stroller. When I see water stains in the lift, I would rather walk further to use another one so my child doesn't step in it or dirty the stroller.' Several residents said they suspect the same individual is responsible, and pointed to the same unit in the block. However, when the reporter visited the unit, no one was home.

Burnt incense paper that caused Chai Chee St fire sparks debate online

SINGAPORE: A fire on Sunday morning (July 13) at Block 52 Chai Chee Street was successfully put out by firefighters from the Paya Lebar and Changi Fire Stations using a water jet. However, the incident caused seven people to require medical attention. Fortunately, none of them needed to be conveyed to the hospital. As a precautionary measure, a total of 35 people were evacuated from the premises by officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The blaze was concentrated at the lift lobby on the 13th floor, which affected two units on the floor above with heat and soot damage. The fire began after a woman burned joss paper for Guanyin's birthday. Unfortunately, the flames spread to several items nearby, and the SCDF was called in shortly past 8:00 on Sunday morning. A resident named Mr Yang told Lianhe Zaobao that while his wife usually burns joss papers outdoors, on Sunday, she chose to perform the ritual at the lift lobby, where he usually keeps items that catch fire, including wooden cabinets and chairs. The fire also caused the power to be cut out for a few hours. Unsurprisingly, commenters online had some negative things to say about Mr Yang, 66, and his wife. A Reddit user held them both responsible for the fire: 'Mr Yang for hoarding flammable rubbish and his wife for burning incense paper next to the flammable rubbish.' 'Hope they'll be charged and made an example of,' wrote another. To this, a commenter replied: 'Entitled folks not wanting to use bin below. Let's see if they get charged or not.' Another chimed in to say, 'Honestly, those barrels should also be banned… Anyone who has ever lived on a low floor knows how bad it can get during some months. If you have no air-conditioning, your options are to choke or to choke and melt from heat.' However, one wrote the following: 'As someone who burns incense, I say times have changed, and the right way to burn incense is to go to the temple and use the ones there. See also Fire! Video of alleged loanshark harassment circulates online As well ……it is rude to burn incense at the void deck because the smoke does give people who want to dry clothes a bad time….like need to rewash.' 'I mean, in a perfect world, I would appreciate neighbours who don't burn offerings. It's not a perfect world, though, and we have to make do. I empathise with you. I'd rather they burn in the barrels than everywhere else they feel like,' a Reddit user chimed in. /TISG Read also: Jurong West landlord evicts tenant after his power bank catches fire & causes damage
