Al Sadd, Al Gharafa seal Amir Cup quarter-final places

Defending champions Al Sadd rallied from an early deficit to claim a convincing 3-1 victory over second-division side Al Kharaitiyat in the Round of 16 clash of the Amir Cup at Al Thumama on Tuesday. The win secures Sadd a place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Al Gharafa, who advanced after eliminating Al Khor.
Kharaitiyat stunned the reigning champions early when Sulaiman An opened the scoring in the 13th minute. However, Sadd responded through Giovanni Henrique, who netted the equaliser in the 23rd minute to restore parity before the break.
In the second half, Sadd took control. Spanish forward Rafael Mujica gave them the lead in the 54th minute, and just two minutes later, Giovanni bagged his second of the night to put the result beyond doubt. Akram Afif delivered a standout performance, providing two key assists and tormenting the Al Kharaitiyat defence throughout.
Al Gharafa edge Al Khor
Earlier, Al Gharafa sealed their place in the quarters with a 2-1 win over Al Khor at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. The Cheetahs took the lead through Spanish striker Joselu in the 20th minute after a precise cross from Rodrigo Mourinho found him inside the box. Joselu made no mistake, slotting the ball into the net to give Al-Gharafa a deserved advantage following early pressure.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Gharafa were unable to extend their lead before halftime. Al Khor nearly equalised in the 35th minute when Sofiane Hanni's curling effort went narrowly wide.
Al Khor continued their pursuit of an equaliser after the break, with Ricardo Gomez firing just wide in the 52nd minute. But it was Gharafa who struck again. In the 63rd minute, Yacine Brahimi delivered a pinpoint cross into the area, which Ahmed al-Janahi finished clinically to double the lead.
Al Khor responded with a wave of attacks and managed to pull one back in the 75th minute. Abdulaziz Hazaa fired a powerful strike from the edge of the area that beat goalkeeper Claude Amin, making it 2-1 and setting up a tense final 15 minutes. Gharafa, however, held firm to secure the victory and will now face Al Sadd in the quarters.
Following the match, Iceland midfielder Aron Gunnarsson was pleased with the result, saying: 'The match wasn't as easy as we expected. Al Khor kept pushing until the end. We gave everything to win and advance, and we're determined to fight for the title and make our fans proud.'

Agencies Spielberg (Austria) Ducati's Marc Marquez broke his Austrian Grand Prix jinx by charging from fourth on the grid to claim victory in Saturday's sprint race at the Red Bull Ring, with his brother and closest championship contender Alex finishing second. The Ducati rider executed a flawless performance to secure his first-ever race win in Austria, extending his remarkable sprint dominance with a 12th victory in 13 rounds this season. The victory moves Marc Marquez 123 points clear of Gresini Racing's Alex Marquez at the top of the championship and 180 above Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia, who was forced to retire due to problems with his bike. KTM's Pedro Acosta completed an all-Spanish podium by finishing third at his team's home circuit, while Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi, who had claimed pole position, could only manage fourth place in the sprint. 'I was super confident in the start and then I was able to be second but I saw immediately that it was quite difficult to be close to Alex,' said Marc Marquez, who is unbeaten since the British Grand Prix in May. 'I decided to wait a bit and when the tyres start to drop is when I feel better and I started to push.' He dedicated the victory to Pau Alsina , a 17-year-old JuniorGP Spanish rider who died due to injuries sustained in a training accident last month. 'Super special sprint victory because I want to say that it's for Pau Alsina. We miss him,' he added, while pointing to Alsina's number 26 on the back of his helmet. 'I don't know what will happen tomorrow but the race is for him.' Bezzecchi had claimed his first pole with Aprilia earlier on Saturday but was beaten to turn one by Alex and Marc as the Marquez brothers dropped the Italian down to third while a wheelspin for Bagnaia dropped him 11 places to 14th. Bezzecchi soon found himself going backwards as Acosta made a smooth overtake on the inside to move up to third while Alex set the early pace with the fastest lap. But Acosta was soon losing ground to the Marquez brothers who have been in another league this season, especially in the sprints. Bagnaia seemed to be struggling with his bike and the Ducati rider dropped to the back of the field before retiring from the race, his face like thunder inside the pit lane. His teammate Marc, however, pounced with five laps to go to take the lead from his brother on turn three and immediately began extending his advantage, going more than half a second clear two laps later. There was no catching Marc as he claimed his 20th victory in sprints and races this season but Alex was happy to finish second again after missing out on the podium in the last two rounds. 'I'm super happy, I had a quite clear target,' Alex said. 'When I saw Marc behind and I know that he was faster than me I did a mistake, so there's nothing more to do but at the end we were there. 'We have a great level again, so I'm really happy to come back like this after the summer break.'

AFC CL Elite and Two draws to be held today
AFC/TNN Doha Asia's finest clubs will learn their paths to continental glory today when the league stage draw for the AFC Champions League Elite (ACL Elite) 2025-26 takes place at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur. Following the resounding success of the rebranded 2024/25 season, the prestigious competition is set to deliver another edition of thrilling matchups. The draw will feature 24 elite clubs, with the League Stage scheduled to kick off on September 15. Representing Qatar are Qatar Stars League champions Al Sadd, Amir Cup winners Al Gharafa, and Al Duhail, who sealed their place with a decisive victory over Iran's Sepahan SC on Tuesday. Defending champions Al Ahli Saudi FC, who lifted their maiden ACL Elite trophy in May, will return with sights firmly set on back-to-back titles. The Saudi giants are among five former champions in the draw, alongside three debutants: Korea Republic's Gangwon FC, Japan's FC Machida Zelvia, and China PR's Chengdu Rongcheng FC. As Asia's top-tier club tournament returns for its 23rd edition, all eyes are on the draw - the first step on the road to continental supremacy. Meanwhile, the draw for the AFC Champions League Two(ACL Two) 2025-26 will also take place today in Kuala Lumpur, with 32 teams set to discover their Group Stage opponents. Guedes, Omar steal show as Al Rayyan and Al Shamal make winning starts
Tribune News Network Doha Al Rayyan and Al Shamal made a winning starts to their campaign in 2025-2026 season of Qatar Stars League on Thursday. While Al Rayyan scored a 3-1 comeback victory against promoted side and last season's Second Division champions Al Sailiya, Al Shamal prevailed 2-0 over Al Ahli. It was the Brazilian Roger Guedes struck two goals for Al Rayyan at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, scoring one from the spot in the 82nd minute before putting the icing on the cake in the 90th minute following a defensive error in a highly-entertaining encounter. Earlier, Hadi Ali registered the first goal of the season for Al Sailiya in the 20th minute to set the tone before an unmarked Julien de Sart rifled home a belter, inches from the edge of the 25-yard box in the 68th minute to restore parity for Al Rayyan, who were earlier denied a penalty call via VAR decision in the 25th minute. The win will doubtlessly serve as a morale booster for Portuguese coach Artur Jorge's men, who had finished the last season in fifth place, while Al Sailiya, who are experiencing a new lease of life in the top division, will be now aiming to bounce back in their next match. Omar stars for Al Shamal In the late evening clash, Al Shamal's 21-year-old Mohammed Rafiq Omar starred with a goal and an assist as the side beat Al Ahli 2-0 at the Khalifa International Stadium. Omar scored in the 88th minute while Mohamed Manai struck earlier in the 40th minute with a fine side flick. It was a delightful first win of the new season for Al Shamal, who had finished sixth in the previous season while Al Ahli were fourth. Al Shamal broke past Al Ahli's defence first in the opening half as Omar worked his way past defenders before providing Manai, also 21, with a perfect ball. Stationed near the left post, Manai caught the cross making a right-foot flick into the net past a hapless Al Ahli goalkeeper Yazan Naim. Al Shamal had earlier scored in the 17th minute but unsuccessfully when Omar had made a breakaway to move in and strike but the goal was ruled out by VAR for off-side. Omar however hit back late in the second session as he latched on to a defensive lapse to dash in, and with a cool head dribbled past the goalkeeper and a chasing defender to make it 2-0. Al Ahli had their moments but weren't forceful enough. An in dipping free kick from Julian Draxler was cut off by Al Shamal goalkeeper Babacar Seck in the 68th minute, who had a good evening under the bar. On Friday, Al Arabi will meet Al Wakrah while Al Gharafa will play Umm Salal. Al Arabi and Al Wakrah will face-off at the Al Thumama Stadium at 6.30pm and the match is expected to generate a lot of Arabi are under Spanish coach Pablo Amowhile Al Wakrah are under the leadership of their new Spanish coach Vicente Moreno. The second match of the day between Al Gharafa and Umm Salal will be played at the Al Bayt Stadium at 8.30pm. Al Gharafa had finished third in last season, while Umm Salal were 11th and played in the playoff where they beat Al Markhiya.
