Good news! The great Merlot plonker outbreak is over

It is of course one of the five classic Bordeaux grapes, and the elixir of Pomerol, but twas the New World that really brought it to our attention and at prices to suit everyone's pocket.
The cooler climates like Bordeaux still make the silkier versions for me and that follows in some of the milder climates of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, but if you want something so lush that it offers the same comfort as a pair of well worn slippers beside a fire, save up your pennies and try something from the Napa valley.
Montes Single Vineyard 2022 Merlot, Chile
Plummy with soft red fruits and hints of morello cherries. Seriously guys, what's not to like?
Majestic Wines, £12 mix six or £13 per bottle
Villa Maria Private Bin Merlot, NZ
Lush. It reminds me of a decent claret which is probably why I love it. Soft, rounded red fruits with enticing hints of vanilla and spice on the finish. Classy and gorgeous.
Waitrose, £13

Man flies 1,000 miles to bring pregnant woman Greggs sausage roll she's craving

Pregnant Lauren Nyland and her husband Jamie were met by a surprise visitor whilst holidaying in Portugal as a family member responded to her craving for a Greggs sausage roll A pregnant woman who was craving a Greggs sausage roll whilst holidaying in Portugal has hailed the "hero" who flew to her rescue. Jamie Nyland and his wife, Lauren, shared their joy and disbelief as their dedicated saviour made the 1,000-mile journey to save the day. "I still CANNOT believe this," Jamie admitted on Facebook afterwards. "My wife Lauren had a pregnancy craving two days ago, she really wanted a Greggs sausage roll whilst on holiday. My brother travelled all day all the way to Portugal to bring her it and now is leaving 24 hours after." Jamie shared snaps of an appreciative Lauren holding the goods a loft - a single sausage roll and an additional four pack to tide her over for the rest of the pair's getaway. "What a kind man," he added. "Thank you bro. Have a safe journey home." ‌ ‌ Writing in response, one Facebook user praised: "That's adorable, really nice and sweet of him to do that I couldn't even get my guy to go Morrisons!" A second person added: "There's your godfather right there!" While third declared: "What a hero!" A fourth Facebook user hailed: "That's devotion! Wow unbelievable!" Whilst a fifth concurred: "Very thoughtful and he got to enjoy some sunshine and spend time with the family too." Meanwhile another Facebook user suggested Jamie's brother's actions weren't actually required. "Best of it, you can get them in a British store at retail park near Albufeira shopping centre," the explained. "They have stuff from Waitrose, Co-op and a massive Iceland range, when my family used to live out there they got the stuff they were missing from home like Pringles etc." Jamie later returned to his account to appeal for help in naming their baby, which is due in eight weeks. "So… we've been really stuck with picking a name for our baby," he confessed in a post. "We had [daughter] Arabella's name months before but this time we're so stuck. "We THINK we have just ONE name we like.. but we're not sure. What names match with Arabella and Roman? Also - we seen some people say you won't feel a name until they're born, is this true? Of course, the name Greg was quickly suggested as one Facebook user suggested: "Considering you were craving sausage rolls thousands of miles away and there was a delivery made maybe if a boy call him Greg." Whilst another wrote: "Sometimes you just know when you see that little face looking up at you it just comes to you. I'm sure you will know when the time is right." And a third agreed: "I think when your baby's born you will look and say they look like a name and use that."

Butterfly Lavender, also known as French Lavender, is loved for its frilly blooms and aromatic leaves. It flowers from late spring right through summer and even into autumn if looked after properly. It will go dormant in winter, and return bigger and bushier next year if maintained properly. Advertisement How to care for lavender To get the most out of your lavender, plant it in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Once it's settled in, it won't need much watering – in fact, it prefers to stay on the dry side. French lavender typically flowers from late spring into early autumn, with a peak bloom period between May and September. Some varieties, like Lavandula stoechas 'Papillon' and 'Tiara', are known for their continuous flowering from late spring to early autumn. Advertisement After French lavender flowers, you should trim the spent flower stalks to encourage more blooms and keep the plant compact. Aldi is selling a cheap $4.49 item that will transform your garden into a colorful summer paradise You can also prune the plant back in late summer or early spring to rejuvenate it and prevent it from becoming woody. French lavender is a versatile herb with various culinary and creative applications. Beyond its beautiful scent and visual appeal, it can be used for baking, creating bath products, making essential oils, and even crafting home decor items like sachets or potpourri. The 5 best flowers to help bees to thrive Nature experts at Faith In Nature have shared the 5 best flowers Brits can plant in their gardens to help bees thrive. Rebecca Miller, Fabulous' Associate Editor and keen gardener explains why "bees are brilliant". "They are vital. They pollinate our food and play a crucial role in our ecosystem. But climate change, the increasing use of pesticides and loss of habitat means bees are endangered. No matter how big your garden or outside space is, you can plant a flower or two to help bees." Lavender Lavender can thrive in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. It's fragrant and flowers all-summer-long meaning it's a big hit with bees - especially bumble bees. Sunflowers This cheery flower giant are bee-magnets. And if you look closely at a sunflower head, the big 'flowers' are actually a cluster of small flowers, called an inflorescence which attract pollinators. Ideally, grow sunflowers in groups to provide nectar and pollen for as many bees as possible. At the end of summer, collect the dried seeds from the sunflower heads to feed the birds or plant next year. Heather These abundant, bell-shaped blooms are brimming with nectar and pollen – which is good news for bees. Cornflowers A vivid blue wildflower, cornflowers are often planted alongside other meadow blooms, like ox-eye daisies and poppies. They grow on tall stems and are packed with nectar, making them particularly attractive to bees. Cornflowers bloom for a long time and are simple to grow, so they're perfect for first-time gardeners and experienced alike. Crocuses (and snowdrops) Later this summer, when you're starting to plan for your Spring displays, consider crocuses and snowdrops. They provide bees, such as the queen buff-tailed bumblebee and male hairy-footed flower bees, with vital early pollen as they emerge from their winter hibernation. Over at Waitrose Garden and Hillier, prices range from £7.99 to £13.99, depending on the size and variety. This is the latest in a string of green-fingered savings from ALDI. Earlier this month, rival Lidl launched a range of garden plants starting from just £1.99, undercutting pricier garden centres and online sellers. Advertisement

"I saw that Waitrose had them on offer for six for £10, which I thought was an absolute bargain." Stacey highlighted the Nemesia "Wisley Vanilla" in her video which she added to a planter-shaped wicker basket she purchased from Home Bargains. Sharing the find with followers, she wrote: "Adding some beautiful aromas to the garden run to Waitrose if you love the scent of vanilla." Viewers loved Stacey's recommendation as the video wowed viewers who were impressed with the bargain find. One viewer said: "I had one last year and it made one corner of the garden smell like ice cream - loved it. "Off to see if my Waitrose has these!" Another added: "Last year I brought huge Vanilla Nemesia plants for real cheap (£10) in B&Q they made my whole garden smell and the flowers returned this year." A fellow gardener also added: "Buy some white bacopa and they will magically grow down the side. I hate my new build garden being overlooked so found a 5 METRE privacy fence to block out nosy neighbours for under £30 "Mine have been flowering since March and will flower all summer." But shoppers should be aware that while they can purchase the Nemesia from Waitrose's website, prices vary. The retailer currently lists a 9cm pot from £6.99. The flower is described on their website as: "Pretty pale pink flowers with a bright golden eye appear on Nemesia 'Wisley Vanilla' from May through to September. "A short and very compact cultivar that is great for adding colour to the front of a sunny garden border or in pots on the patio." It goes on to warn, however, that "winter protection is needed" for colder areas. Offering garden advice, the description also adds that the flower can be "planted outside into a well-prepared bed, or used to fill decorative pots and hanging baskets for the patio" once the warmer weather arrives. Waitrose advises: "Pinching out the growing tips will encourage them to become bushier. "Feeding with a high-potash fertiliser at regular intervals throughout the summer will promote even more flowers to form."
