Amazon Pushes AI Expansion in APAC: Will AWS-Upstage Deal Pay Off?
Amazon AMZN is stepping up its AI ambitions in Asia-Pacific, one of the fastest-growing technology markets worldwide. Its recent partnership with South Korea's AI startup Upstage marks a strategic move to strengthen Amazon Web Services' (AWS) position in the region. Upstage has selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider to train and scale its large language model, Solar, giving Amazon a prominent foothold in South Korea — a country rapidly emerging as an AI innovation hub. The deal reflects Amazon's optimism for two reasons. First, AWS offers specialized tools like SageMaker, Trainium and Inferentia chips that lower costs and improve efficiency for AI developers. Partnering with Upstage provides Amazon with a high-profile case study of these technologies in action. Second, the collaboration targets regulated industries and public institutions, areas where AWS' compliance capabilities provide a competitive edge and long-term growth opportunities. Beyond infrastructure, Amazon has also taken a minority investment in Upstage, signaling confidence in Korea's AI ecosystem while ensuring aligned incentives. The agreement extends into a joint go-to-market strategy, which is expected to expand AWS' pipeline across APAC and enhance its global AI credibility. Notably, this comes as AWS continues to post strong financial performance; its second-quarter 2025 results showed double-digit growth (17.5%) in cloud revenues, underpinned by surging demand for AI services. By combining Upstage's local expertise with AWS' global scale, Amazon is positioning itself to capture high-value workloads and secure leadership in APAC's competitive AI market. This partnership could well become a blueprint for Amazon's broader international AI expansion. Amazon's Competitors in the AI Space Microsoft MSFT is reinforcing its leadership in the cloud-AI race through seamless integration of enterprise solutions and AI infrastructure. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, Microsoft Azure grew 39% year over year, lifting annual revenues past $75 billion. Supported by over 400 data centers across 70 regions, the company leverages Copilot and its OpenAI partnership. Microsoft's tightly connected ecosystem — spanning Windows, Office and enterprise software — creates powerful lock-in that keeps businesses anchored to its cloud platform. In Southeast Asia, the company is building a new hyperscale cloud region in Malaysia with three data centers slated for launch by mid-2025. These moves sharpen Microsoft's APAC footprint and strengthen its cloud-AI front against Amazon. Alphabet Inc. GOOGL is accelerating in cloud and AI, with Google Cloud delivering 32% year-over-year growth in the second quarter of 2025, driven by Gemini models and custom chips. Alphabet's AI ecosystem, spanning Gemini's 450 million users and AI Mode's 100 million users, has strong appeal for startups and developers. The company is also infusing AI into Search, while the U.S. and India rollout of AI Mode is expected to propel further adoption and strengthen Alphabet's cloud growth. In Southeast Asia, Google has invested $2 billion in Malaysia to establish its first data center and Google Cloud hub, aligning with regional digital transformation and AI adoption goals. Hertz partners with Amazon Autos to sell used vehicles online
This May 23, 2020, photo shows rental vehicles parked outside a closed Hertz car rental office in south Denver. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski, file) Hertz Global Holdings said on Wednesday its car sales unit was partnering with automotive retail platform, Amazon Autos, to sell pre-owned vehicles, sending the car rental company's shares up 7 per cent in early trading. Shares of used-car retailers fell, with Avis Budget Group down 6 per cent, Carvana losing 4.2 per cent and CarMax shedding 1.4 per cent. ADVERTISEMENT The collaboration builds on Amazon Autos' recent expansion into used-vehicle sales, Hertz said. Amazon launched Amazon Autos last year to expand the online retail platform's services to include used and certified pre-owned vehicles, with participating dealers in more than 130 U.S. cities. Hertz and Amazon will start offering their service within 75 miles of Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Seattle, with plans to expand to Hertz Car Sales' 45 locations across the United States. Estero, Florida-based Hertz Global operates its car rental business through its Dollar, Thrifty and Firefly vehicle-rental brands across 160 countries, and also operates a car-sharing business in Europe. Its Hertz Car Sales brand offers used cars for sale online and at locations across the U.S. Hertz has been pressured by bumpy rental demand, forcing it to shed much of its electric-vehicle fleet in favor of gas-powered cars over the past few years. It has also drawn scrutiny over its AI-powered sensors - used to check returned vehicles for damage - which some customers say have frequently misfired. Hedge-fund billionaire Bill Ackman boosted his stake in Hertz earlier this year to nearly 20 per cent through his investment management company Pershing Square, expressing confidence in the management's efforts to reduce costs to improve profit margins over the next several years despite ongoing tariff pressures. --- Reporting by Aatreyee Dasgupta in Bengaluru; Editing by Pooja Desai

The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights IonQ, Microsoft, Amazon.com, Alphabet and NVIDIA
For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – August 20, 2025 – announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: IonQ, Inc. IONQ, Microsoft Corp. MSFT, Inc. AMZN, Alphabet Inc. GOOGL and NVIDIA Corp. NVDA. Here are highlights from Tuesday's Analyst Blog: Can IONQ Become the NVIDIA of Quantum Computing, and Is It a Buy? IonQ, Inc. 's shares surged 457.9% over the past year, driven by its significant advancements in quantum computing. IonQ has offered its customers quantum systems via platforms like Microsoft Corp. 's Azure, Inc. 's Amazon Web Services, and Alphabet Inc.'s Google Cloud. IonQ now aims to position itself as the NVIDIA Corp. of quantum computing. Will it be able to achieve this goal, and is this an opportune moment to invest in its shares? Let's find out – Reasons to Be Bullish on IONQ IonQ has prepared the groundwork for its quantum computers to seamlessly integrate into real-world applications. IonQ is preparing compatible trapped-ion quantum computers for major cloud platforms. IonQ has already acquired several companies, including Qubitekk, ID Quantique, and Lightsynq Technologies, to enhance its presence in the quantum field and has secured contracts from the U.S. Air Force Research Lab, which is expected to drive significant growth for the company in the next two years. IonQ's revenues have increased significantly since its initial public offering in 2021. Management projects revenues between $82 million and $100 million this year, significantly higher than $43.1 million in 2024. The company is on a positive trajectory, having reported second-quarter revenues of $20.7 million compared to $11.4 million last year, and anticipates third-quarter revenues of $25 million, nearly double the previous year's figures. This revenue growth indicates that the company's acquisition strategy is effective and its business model is solid. Can IONQ Become the NVIDIA in Quantum Computing? IonQ aspires to become the NVIDIA of quantum computing by relying on consistent revenue growth and successful acquisitions, with more anticipated in the future. However, despite revenue growth, IonQ hasn't generated any profit. In the second quarter, IonQ had an operating expense of $181.3 million, which resulted in an operating loss of $160.6 million, way more than $48.9 million loss a year ago. The operating loss exceeded revenue growth, which can compel IonQ to face financial challenges and jeopardize its aim to become the NVIDIA of quantum computing. NVIDIA, in reality, is in a better position to compete against pure-play quantum computing stocks like IonQ. This is because NVIDIA aims to integrate its graphics processing units (GPUs) and quantum processing units (QPUs) in a hybrid quantum system to efficiently manage calculation errors. Utilizing its GPU framework serves as an effective bridge from current classical computers to quantum technology. Additionally, in contrast to IonQ, NVIDIA has reported an operating income of $21.6 billion in the fiscal first quarter, up 28% year over year. Its revenues also jumped 69% year over year to $44.1 billion. Being a profitable enterprise will enable NVIDIA to effectively tackle the challenges of quantum computing and expand its operations. Therefore, it is premature to determine that IonQ could become the NVIDIA of quantum computing. Here's How to Trade IONQ Stock Now The series of acquisitions indicates that IonQ has bold plans to grow in the quantum computing industry, which is projected to reach a value of $100 billion by 2035, according to McKinsey. This should encourage stakeholders to remain invested in IonQ stock. However, new investors should proceed with caution. Quantum computing is still in its early stages, and IonQ is not yet profitable. Several leading CEOs have stated that the widespread use of quantum computing technology is still years away and that it remains prone to errors. Therefore, IonQ is a risky investment suitable only for high-risk-tolerance investors. Let's not forget that IonQ is an overpriced stock and could see its price fall when the market corrects itself. IonQ's forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio stands at 126.59 compared to 4.14 for the Computer-Integrated System industry. For now, IonQ has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
