Residents still out of homes after explosives found in St Helens house

ITV News26-06-2025
Hundreds of people are preparing to spend a fourth day away from home after a hoard of explosives was foun
d at a man's house following his death.
"Explosive ordnance" was discovered at john Nelson's home on Chadwick Road in St Helens on Tuesday, Merseyside Police said. The "reclusive" 64-year-old's property was packed with wartime memorabilia, including devices and detonators which officers feared could explode.
More than 200 homes nearby were evacuated with some families being moved to a local community centre and then a school hall. Residents have yet to be given an estimate of when they can return to their homes.
A bomb disposal team carried out a series of safe detonations in a nearby field.
They were continuing to work through the house on Thursday to ensure it was safe.
Merseyside Police earlier said the address "presented a challenge" as all the rooms in the house contained a "considerable number" of belongings that Mr Nelson had collected over the years.
In a later update, the force revealed more improvised explosive devices (IEDs) had been found.
It said the area would remained cordoned off overnight into Friday due to concerns that further devices could be found.
Some of the ordnance is believed to date back to World War Two.
Merseyside Police said Mr Nelson's father was believed to have been in the Home Guard.
Chief Inspector Chris Barnes said: 'We realise this will be a really frustrating time for those who have been displaced from their homes and would like to reassure them that we will work our way through the house, with EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) specialists, as quickly as we can, but public safety is our ultimate priority and we have to make sure the search is done properly.'Residents have been incredibly understanding and patient throughout and I know the community, families and friends have pulled together to minimise the impact this incident has on all those affected.'St Helens Borough Council continues to provide assistance based at Chain Lane Community Centre, supported by our PCSOs and I would encourage anyone with concerns to visit the centre where help will be at hand.'Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the road while emergency services remain at the scene.

Police helicopter swoops scarily close to ground in motorbike chase

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A police helicopter swept perilously close to the ground while pursuing a motorbike in Merseyside. Footage of the chase showed the low-flying helicopter speeding towards a motorbike less than a metre above the road. The hour-long pursuit was a 'legitimate policing task in support of public safety', the National Police Air Service (NPAS) said. A man was later arrested for dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent, driving while disqualified, failing to stop, driving without insurance, and conspiring to cause a public nuisance. Officers arrested a second suspect for theft of a motor vehicle and assisting an offender. NPAS Chief Operating Officer Chief Supt Fiona Gaffney said the short clip did not provide full context of Wednesday's operation. She said: 'At around 2.30pm, our air crew was deployed to assist Merseyside Police after reports of a man riding a scrambler bike dangerously near Carr Mill Dam. 'The rider mounted pavements, sped through residential areas, and narrowly missed a pedestrian. 'A second male later joined him on the bike and together they continued to evade police, travelling across roads and fields. 'Our crew tracked the motorcyclist for over an hour, providing continuous updates to ground officers.' Chief Supt Gaffney explained that the crew had been attempting to land in a safe location, but decided to abort the landing after the suspect continued to flee, and accelerated in 'an accepted take-off manoeuvre'. More Trending After internally reviewing the aircraft footage, radio logs, and its operational decision-making, NPAS said it was satisfied that the crew had acted appropriately, carried out a dynamic risk assessment, and operated within all regulations. It said in a statement: 'The fast-paced and unpredictable nature of vehicle pursuits can require crews to make rapid decisions to ensure public safety. 'We have robust procedures in place to support these decisions and safety remains our highest priority. 'We continue to work closely with the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure all relevant standards and procedures are upheld. We thank the public for their concern and engagement and we remain committed to transparency and professionalism in all our operations.' Man caught on CCTV 'starting fire which gutted Scots businesses and killed cat'

The blaze took place in Glasgow last month and a £10,000 reward has been offered for information. CCTV footage has emerged of a man allegedly starting a massive fire at a Glasgow business which lead to the death of a cat. ‌ The clip shows the man pouring a liquid onto the floor from a green canister. ‌ He then disappears out of sight, and moments later flames burst from the floor where the liquid had been poured at the business in question, in Glasgow's Kinning Park area. ‌ The fire took place at a building in Stanley Street on Thursday, July 31, 2025. Glasgow Live reports smoke could be seen from Anderston, on the other side of the Clyde. It rose from the scene as firefighters were pictured battling the flames from aerial platforms, after being scrambled to attend the blaze at 6.46am. A cat died in the fire. Nine fire engines attended after a 999 call. Police are probing the wilful fire-raising, with officers asking anyone with information to come forward. Now CCTV footage of the incident has emerged of the moment a man, riding a bike, enters the premises and sprays a substance before allegedly setting it alight. John McBride, who faces losing his house after his business The Grow Shop was destroyed in the blaze, said: "I got an alert from my alarm system that someone was in the business and I was half way there when I saw the flames. ‌ "I phoned 999 but by then the fire brigade was already there. It's completely gutted my business, my brothers, my mum's and the tattoo shop. There are about 15 people who have lost their jobs because of this." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Unfortunately, none of the businesses were insured after a claim for a fire at a nearby car garage five years ago raised the cost from £400 a year to almost £15,000, making it unaffordable. ‌ John continued: "I might lose my house, my brother might lose his, everyone is very stressed, and it's having a major impact on our health. My girlfriend has been in the hospital for two weeks now after having a stroke. "We keep three cats in the shop to keep down the rats, they come and go as they want. Zena died in the shop. It's only fortunate that the others were out at the time. "We don't know why anyone would do this. It's ruined so many lives. I estimate that it cost us all around £500,000 in lost stock and damage. ‌ "We're trying to get the word out to find who did this. The community has come together and raised £10,000 as a reward to anyone who can identify the guy in the CCTV." John – who had only just opened a second shop, on Spiersbridge Terrace in Thornliebank Industrial Estate – has been left without any income while bills continue to stack. He added: "We don't have any customers at the new shop yet. We're hoping it will pick up because I have no income and it's just bills after bills we are getting." A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: 'Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0563 of 31 July, 2025. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.'
