Kolkata Law Student Rape Case: The alleged rape of a 24-year-old student of South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba has triggered a political slugfest in West Bengal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that the accused was seen with Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The student was allegedly gang-raped on the college premises on June 25, saying she was struck with a hockey stick and that the main accused had threatened to kill her boyfriend. Three accused persons have been arrested in connection with the case.
Monojit Mishra, 31, a former student and current Organising Secretary of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), was produced before the Alipore court on Friday, along with the other two accused, and was sent to police custody till July 1.
The BJP has launched a fresh attack on the ruling TMC, saying that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's party had links with the accused. The BJP also shared pictures of the accused Manojit Mishra with Abhishek Banerjee and West Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
'OUTRAGEOUS! Manojit Mishra, one of the prime accused in the brutal gang-rape of a college student in Kasba has direct links with the most powerful in the TMC," said BJP IT Cell in-charge Amit Malviya, citing reports that college authorities were instructed to lock the gates while the crime was taking place.
'This is not just a crime. This is a cover-up of the highest order. TMC is a party of rapists and protectors of rapists. We will not allow political power to bury this crime. We will not allow Mamata Banerjee's regime to silence the voice of justice."
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, 'Yet again Mamata Banerjee's govt is found standing with the accused! Accused no 1 Manojit Mishra is a TMC member! Whether it is RG Kar Rape and Murder case where Mamta Banerjee tried to silence victims parents, Or now when accused in Kasba gangrape case is found to be a TMC member, Mamata Banerjee govt appropriates crime against women!"

Meanwhile, TMC leader Shashi Panja condemned the crime and urged the opposition not to politicise the tragedy. 'There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. You have to condemn the incident. You are now trying to show photographs," she said in reference to BJP sharing photographs.
She also lauded the police for arresting the accused within 12 hours and said such action was missing in BJP-ruled states, adding that TMC's student wing does not promote violence.
'Beaten With Hockey Stick, Aberration Marks On Neck'
The incident reportedly took place on June 25 between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm. A complaint was filed on Thursday night, and the Kasba police station arrested three people in connection with the incident. They were identified as Manojit Mishra, 31, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20.
According to the complaint filed by the survivor, on Wednesday evening when one of the accused expressed romantic interest and made unwanted advances, which she rejected. 'I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not agree," she said in the complaint.
The victim said she fell at the feet of Manojit Mishra begging him to let her go. 'I touched his feet but he didn't let me go. They again took me to the room, they took me to the guard room forcefully, he undressed me and started forcefully raping me," she said in her complaint.
According to the victim's medical report, aberration marks have been found around the neck and breasts of the first-year law student at Calcutta Law College in Kolkata. The medical report has asserted that the possibility of sexual assault cannot be ruled out, sources told CNN-News18.
