The Shoprite Group has showcased the capabilities of the retail giant's newest addition to its network of 29 distribution centres across South Africa: the state-of-the-art Riverfields facility.
Shoprite said there was no better time to show off the new facility with its Checkers' XXL Savings currently taking place.
Shoprite said that this year's promotion promises to deliver over R45 million in savings to customers daily.
"Last year's XXL campaign was a resounding success, moving an astonishing 3 million litres of milk, 55 tonnes of instant coffee, and 650 tonnes of cheese—enough dairy to outweigh three Boeing 747s. With an extensive range of new deals across key categories including groceries, baby products, general merchandise, and liquor, Shoprite aims to surpass the record volumes achieved in 2024," the group said.

The centre's operational capacity allows for 220 trucks to be on-site at any given time, optimising logistics by shortening delivery routes, which in turn reduces transport costs and carbon emissions.
Andrew Havinga, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Shoprite Group, highlighted the innovation behind their logistics.
'By optimising the distance between supplier, DC and store, we've created the shortest and most responsive supply chain in South Africa,' Havinga said.
This efficient system is bolstered by real-time tracking, predictive analytics, and high-efficiency sortation technologies, ensuring customers receive the freshest and highest quality products daily.
The Riverfields DC operates with an impressive selection of over 16,000 products, ranging from dry goods to perishables and convenience meals, including approximately 700 varieties of fresh fruit and vegetables.
'Riverfields was designed to support high-volume trading periods like the Checkers XXL promotion,' even as it lays the groundwork for the company's long-term commitment to infrastructure investment, enhanced supply chain capabilities, and job creation,' Havinga added.
The introduction of the Riverfields DC has resulted in the creation of around 1,700 job opportunities, with 750 roles filled by local residents in a community grappling with an unemployment rate nearing 37%.
The Shoprite Group's distribution centres across the country employ around 10,000 individuals, encompassing roles in warehousing, driving, and support services.
As South Africa's retail landscape evolves, the Shoprite Group is poised to leverage technological advancements, operational efficiencies, and community engagement to redefine the shopping experience while supporting economic growth within its operating regions.

Tricia Survé Foundation making a tangible impact on community upliftment

Some of the attendees at a recent community upliftment and empowerment event hosted by the Tricia Survé Foundation in Newton, Wellington. Image: Supplied The Tricia Survé Foundation is making inroads in bringing about a positive change to the lives of community members residing in Newton, Wellington. Founded by Tricia Survé, who hails from the same community in Wellington, the goals of the foundation, she said, are all about uplifting communities, restoring dignity, and igniting new flames of hope - all in aspiration of its long-term goals to facilitate healing and transformation to those whose lives they impact. 'I've recently started this foundation, which I'm very passionate about," she said, adding that she pours all her energy into Wellington and in particular Newton, where she grew up. "I think that things have changed quite a lot in that community. Even when I go and visit, it's evident that things have turned for the worse, and my goal with the foundation is to help them and to uplift them," she said. Next Stay Close ✕ Ms Survé said: 'While we live in a world where things have become more and more difficult, it is not the idea to make people feel like they are in need, but rather to assist them in getting back on their feet." The foundation, established by Ms Survé last year, has three pillars: philanthropy, community, and soul food. Its current objective is to serve and focus solely on the Newton community as a starting point for giving back, empowering, uplifting, and supporting people with compassion and understanding. The foundation recently hosted an event in Newton, during which 100 women and children were treated to essential clothing, shoes, food parcels, and served a warm meal and refreshments. Mrs Survé addressed the women at the event, delivering words of encouragement and solidarity. One of the beneficiaries whose circumstances have been positively transformed through the assistance and support of the foundation is the Little Star Pre-School in Newton. School principal Jouwenen Le Cordeur said the foundation assisted the school in multiple ways. 'Last year, the foundation visited the school on an outreach, and Tricia and her team of people came out to do fun and educational activities with our children. We could see how the children enjoyed it by the smiles on their faces; the day really lifted our children's spirits.' Ms Le Cordeur said what made the outreach even more special is that after the event, the foundation donated all the resources used during the interactive play sessions to the school. So, buckets of play-dough and other ECD tools were donated to the school. Additionally, children on the day were spoiled with snack packs and warm knitted caps to ward off winter chills. 'Even the parents were very grateful and thanked the foundation for what they have done,' said Ms Le Cordeur, adding that she appreciates how the foundation prefers getting involved with the children on a personal level, by spending time with them and interacting with them. Financially, the foundation's assistance in the form of a monthly contribution allocated to the salaries of ECD staff has been a lifeline and a welcome financial breather to both the school and parents. She looks forward to future workshops in the pipeline, she said. 'We are very grateful to the foundation because through their assistance they are not only putting smiles on our children's faces, but in their involvement with the school they are making us as staff feel seen and valued; they have boosted our staff's morale, leaving us with a positive disposition,' she said. Parks Tau faces scrutiny over lottery licence award as losing bidder challenges decision

Minister of Trade and Industry Parks Tau is under scrutiny as a losing bidder challenges the award of the fourth lottery licence to Sizekhaya Holdings in court. Image: Independent Media Archives Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition Parks Tau is facing mounting pressure after a losing bidder for the fourth lottery licence, Lekalinga (RF) Pty Ltd, applied to the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, seeking to review and set aside the decision to award the licence to Sizekhaya Holdings. The court application comes hot on the heels of the DA's demand for Tau to appear before the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition to clarify how he selected Sizekhaya Holdings and how he struck a deal with Ithuba Holdings, the current operator of the National Lottery. The DA has written to the Chairperson of the portfolio committee, Mzwandile Masina, demanding that Tau and the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) chairperson, Barney Pityana, appear before the committee to account for the opaque manner in which Sizekhaya Holdings was appointed as the new licence holder. "We are concerned about the lack of transparency in the appointment process," said Toby Chance, DA spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition. "There are reports that many of the Lotto's 17,000 ticket machines are not operational, due to technical problems emanating from a switch of systems. This is unacceptable." Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Lekalinga (RF) Pty Ltd, a Serbian-based company that teamed up with local partners, has filed a court application that seeks to force Tau to produce the record of his decision when awarding the licence to Sizekhaya Holdings. The company, founded by Vladimir Vukovic, is questioning whether Sizekhaya could lawfully be awarded the licence, given its alleged non-compliance with some of the conditions bidders had to adhere to. Vukovic said in his affidavit that his company had teamed up with local partners to bid for the licence but was not informed of the reasons for the decision. "As a result, Lekalinga does not know the basis on which the licence was awarded to Sizekhaya or why the other bids were unsuccessful," he said. Vukovic raised concerns regarding Sizekhaya's alleged links to the JSE-listed gaming group Goldrush and the potential for indirect financial interests held by prohibited persons. "The record should reveal the extent to which the minister assessed whether any political party or political office-bearer holds a direct or indirect financial interest in Sizekhaya and ensured compliance with the applicable prohibitions," he said. Vukovic also questioned Sizekhaya's ability to take over the lottery within the stipulated five-month timeframe. "This timeline is significant. It points to the ability to mobilise resources, infrastructure, and operational capacity within that timeframe," he said. Tau's spokesperson, Yamkela Fanisi, said Tau respected the decision made by Vukovic. "The minister respects the decision by those who were not successful bidders... He believes the process was credible and followed due process. At a time when the portfolio committee calls us to account, we will do so," Fanisi said. Meanwhile, Tau has applied for leave to appeal against a recent court ruling that set aside his decision to grant a 12-month temporary licence to Ithuba Holdings. The appeal, lodged with the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, effectively allows Ithuba to continue running the lottery until the appeal outcome is reached. Ithuba has agreed to continue operating the National Lottery, ensuring that all games, draws, and prize payouts will proceed normally. The company has reassured the public that it will maintain their commitment to integrity, transparency, and the benefit of South Africans. While Ithuba's continued operation provides short-term relief, the long-term future of the National Lottery remains uncertain. Sizekhaya Holdings is set to take over the lottery in June 2026, but questions remain about the transparency of the licensing process and the impact of further legal challenges, and how Tau struck a deal with Ithuba to hold the fort while Sizekhaya is obtaining its licence.

SAA distances Itself from Mango rescue process

South African Airways (SAA) says it has no involvement in the business rescue of its subsidiary, Mango Airlines Image: Karen Sandison / Independent Newspapers South African Airways (SAA) says it has no involvement in the business rescue of its subsidiary, Mango Airlines, as the low-cost carrier moves closer to finalising a sale to a new investor. The airline issued the clarification following a wave of public queries about Mango's status. SAA emphasised that Mango's business rescue process is entirely separate from the one SAA exited in April 2021. "Mango Airlines (SOC) Limited remains a subsidiary of SAA that was placed in business rescue in August 2021. Mango's business rescue process is totally separate from the business rescue process that South African Airways (SOC) Limited came out of in April 2021," the airline said. "SAA has no authority or direct oversight over Mango's financial obligations, and current and future business plan," it added in a statement to the media. The update comes after Mango's Business Rescue Practitioner, Sipho Sono, confirmed that the airline is nearing the final stages of negotiating a sale and purchase agreement with a potential investor.
