Chiefs request extension of deadline for stadium deal in Kansas

Chiefs request extension of deadline for stadium deal in Kansas

NBC Sports9 hours ago

The Chiefs have leverage. And they're using it.
With both Missouri and Kansas offering stadium deals, the Chiefs want more time to decide whether to proceed with a new domed stadium in Kansas.
Via Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council plans to consider extending the deadline during a July 7 meeting. In a letter released by the KLLC on Thursday, Chiefs president Mark Donovan requested an extension of the June 30 deadline.
'We believe the foundation is in place for something truly historic — not only for our team but for the future of the state's economy and national profile,' Donovan wrote.
So, yes, the Chiefs are creating the impression that they're seriously considering their options in Kansas. Which, whether they intend it or not, will potentially get them a better package from Missouri.
The two states provide very different options for the Chiefs. In Missouri, the Chiefs would have a $1.15 billion renovation of Arrowhead Stadium. In Kansas, the Chiefs would have a $3 billion domed stadium.
The domed stadium carries another potential benefit. A Kansas City Super Bowl.
Could that make the difference? Time will tell.

Todd Bowles and Jason Licht React to Buccaneers' Contract Extensions

Todd Bowles and Jason Licht React to Buccaneers' Contract Extensions originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have locked down general manager Jason Licht and head coach Todd Bowles to multiyear extensions, as reported on Thursday. Advertisement The extensions are drawing mixed reviews from the fan base, as most are happy to see Licht extended, but some are questioning the logic behind Bowles' extension. The Bucs are on a successful five-year run under Licht and Bowles, with a Super Bowl win in 2020 and a division title in 2021 with Bowles as the defensive coordinator. Bowles took over the head coaching duties in 2022 and Tampa Bay has won the NFC South each year since, albeit in the what many consider to be the weakest division in football. Bowles' reaction was one of gratitude after the extension. "I am extremely appreciative of the confidence that the Glazer family has shown in my abilities to lead this football team. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly and am honored to have," Bowles said. "It starts at the top, and their unwavering commitment to our organization allows us to perform at our best and compete for championships. I am equally excited to continue working with Jason for years to come as we build on the success we've enjoyed and keep reaching for even bigger and better goals." Advertisement Two of those division titles under Bowles were with records of 9-8 and 8-9. And the defense, which Bowles still runs, has been heavily criticized as underperforming. That will hopefully change after another impressive draft by Licht this year, which focused on defensive talent. For Licht, it's been an amazing run since 2014, particularly in the second half of his tenure in Tampa Bay. He drafted players like Mike Evans, Tristan Wirfs, Vita Vea, Antoine Winfield Jr., Chris Godwin, Bucky Irving, Calijah Kancey, Cade Otton, Graham Barton, Luke Goedeke, Cody Mauch and more. Licht's response to the extension was also one of gratitude. "I am very grateful to the Glazer family for the trust and belief they have shown in what we are doing here," Licht said in a statement. "Their commitment to providing the resources along with their dedication to fostering a winning culture throughout our entire building are the primary reasons for the great success we have enjoyed these past five seasons. I am also very excited to continue working alongside Todd well into the future as we continue our mission of finding and developing talented players and chasing additional championships for our great fans." Bills' McDermott Facing Hot Seat Warnings For One Simple Reason

Bills' McDermott Facing Hot Seat Warnings For One Simple Reason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Since Sean McDermott's arrival there has been plenty of winning in Western New York. The Buffalo Bills have risen back to prominence, restoring their power atop the AFC hierarchy. Advertisement Much of this is a credit to the head coach. McDermott has powered an 86-45 record since in his eight years at the helm, leading the Bills to a pair of AFC Championship Games in that time. Granted, the Bills finding Josh Allen also contributes a great deal here. But Buffalo systematically and culturally has a much different feel than they did a decade ago. The renaissance has been great. The five straight years of dominance over the AFC East even better. One blemish, however, hovers over the legacy McDermott has established with the Bills. Buffalo last appeared in a Super Bowl in 1994. Having not one in the history of the franchise, fans are starved for the team to right that wrong, make it back to the big game and secure that holy grail. Advertisement If Buffalo falls short once again, some believe the Bills may want to examine a potential change in leadership. CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan listed McDermott among his coaches on the hottest seats heading into next season. "Under McDermott, Buffalo has been unable to get over the hump, win the conference and advance to the Super Bowl with the chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. As they've been with most other teams in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs have been the main roadblock for Buffalo, which has lost to them in four of its past five playoff runs. "If he cannot break through that ceiling yet again in 2025, it may force the Buffalo brass to seriously consider finding a new leader who may have a better chance to take the franchise up a notch." For all that McDermott has accomplished, is it fair to be on the hot seat at this point? From that side, no. That is not the only part to be examined here. Advertisement Allen is entering his prime years and if the idea is to maximize their championship window, he must be priority No. 1. The Bills cannot drag out McDermott's tenure hoping something changes if it simply will not. Yet, it's a complicated matter because McDermott has done everything else to deserve the leash and time to figure this thing out. Assuming the Bills fail to break through once again, that faith in the head coach will be supremely tested. Chiefs Urged To Consider Kyle Pitts Trade As Travis Kelce Successor

Chiefs Urged To Consider Kyle Pitts Trade As Travis Kelce Successor originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kanas City Chiefs have one of the best tight ends of all time in Travis Kelce, but this may be his final season in the NFL, as he is about to turn 36 years old. Advertisement So now is as good of a time as ever to start looking for his successor. In a recent video posted by Bleacher Report, Mitch Milani puts together 10 blockbuster trades for the Chiefs to make that would help get Patrick Mahouts his fourth ring. One of the deals he proposes would have the Chiefs sending a few late-round picks in 2026 to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for young tight end Kyle Pitts. "Falcons fans would even agree that Kyle Pitts has been poorly treated and poorly utilized," Milani said. "So why not give him to a team with Andy Reid that has used Travis Kelce magnificently?" The Falcons selected Pitts out of Florida with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, which made him the highest-drafted tight end in history. But his career so far has not been exactly what Atlanta thought it would be. Advertisement In 2024, Pitts finished with a fairly disappointing 602 receiving yards and four touchdowns, which on the bright side, is the most he has been to the end zone in a season so far. But many think this is not Pitt's fault, as the Falcons have not utilized his skills at the tight end position very well. If there is someone that knows how to incorporate a star tight end into an offense, it is Andy Reid. As a result, the reigning AFC champions could consider looking into a trade for Pitts going into the 2025 season.
