Chiefs request extension of deadline for stadium deal in Kansas
The Chiefs have leverage. And they're using it.
With both Missouri and Kansas offering stadium deals, the Chiefs want more time to decide whether to proceed with a new domed stadium in Kansas.
Via Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council plans to consider extending the deadline during a July 7 meeting. In a letter released by the KLLC on Thursday, Chiefs president Mark Donovan requested an extension of the June 30 deadline.
'We believe the foundation is in place for something truly historic — not only for our team but for the future of the state's economy and national profile,' Donovan wrote.
So, yes, the Chiefs are creating the impression that they're seriously considering their options in Kansas. Which, whether they intend it or not, will potentially get them a better package from Missouri.
The two states provide very different options for the Chiefs. In Missouri, the Chiefs would have a $1.15 billion renovation of Arrowhead Stadium. In Kansas, the Chiefs would have a $3 billion domed stadium.
The domed stadium carries another potential benefit. A Kansas City Super Bowl.
Could that make the difference? Time will tell.

That will hopefully change after another impressive draft by Licht this year, which focused on defensive talent. For Licht, it's been an amazing run since 2014, particularly in the second half of his tenure in Tampa Bay. He drafted players like Mike Evans, Tristan Wirfs, Vita Vea, Antoine Winfield Jr., Chris Godwin, Bucky Irving, Calijah Kancey, Cade Otton, Graham Barton, Luke Goedeke, Cody Mauch and more. Licht's response to the extension was also one of gratitude. "I am very grateful to the Glazer family for the trust and belief they have shown in what we are doing here," Licht said in a statement. "Their commitment to providing the resources along with their dedication to fostering a winning culture throughout our entire building are the primary reasons for the great success we have enjoyed these past five seasons. CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan listed McDermott among his coaches on the hottest seats heading into next season. "Under McDermott, Buffalo has been unable to get over the hump, win the conference and advance to the Super Bowl with the chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. As they've been with most other teams in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs have been the main roadblock for Buffalo, which has lost to them in four of its past five playoff runs. "If he cannot break through that ceiling yet again in 2025, it may force the Buffalo brass to seriously consider finding a new leader who may have a better chance to take the franchise up a notch." For all that McDermott has accomplished, is it fair to be on the hot seat at this point? From that side, no. That is not the only part to be examined here. Advertisement Allen is entering his prime years and if the idea is to maximize their championship window, he must be priority No. 1. The Bills cannot drag out McDermott's tenure hoping something changes if it simply will not. Yet, it's a complicated matter because McDermott has done everything else to deserve the leash and time to figure this thing out. Assuming the Bills fail to break through once again, that faith in the head coach will be supremely tested. But many think this is not Pitt's fault, as the Falcons have not utilized his skills at the tight end position very well. If there is someone that knows how to incorporate a star tight end into an offense, it is Andy Reid. As a result, the reigning AFC champions could consider looking into a trade for Pitts going into the 2025 season.
