Chef D brings Cuban comfort food to young foodies at SCRF

Sharjah 2425-04-2025

In his high-energy, kid-friendly session 'Kids Can Cook: Chef D's Recipes from Around the World,' the Miami-based chef whipped up an all-time flavourful Latin American classic - Picadillo, a Cuban dish made with ground beef, tomatoes, olives, and spices. Designed to be both delicious and accessible, the dish reflected Chef D's broader culinary mission: to inspire children everywhere to discover the world through food.
'I'm from Miami, Florida, which is just off the coast of Cuba,' said Stephen, known affectionately to his fans as Chef D from Kids Can Cook on Instagram, as he stirred a simmering pot of Picadillo before a curious audience of families and young aspiring chefs.
'This dish is part of my roots, and it's also one of the many recipes featured in my book. I've travelled the globe learning recipes, and Picadillo is one of my favourites to share - it's simple, hearty, and has flavours that children love.'
A taste of travel on a plate
The live cooking demonstration was filled with laughter, questions, and helpful tips from the author of Chef D Cooks the World, who took time between ingredients to explain how food connects cultures - and how every dish tells a story.
'It's more than just cooking,' he said during what was his third visit to Sharjah: 'When kids learn about recipes like Picadillo, they're also learning about places, people, and traditions. Food is a fun and delicious way to explore the world.'
The dish, rich with Spanish and American influences, was a hit with the audience, many of whom sampled the flavours and took notes to try it at home.
'It's great food diplomacy,' joked one parent in the crowd. 'Chef D makes global flavours feel like something your own child can cook - and enjoy.'
Now in its 16th edition, SCRF 2025 continues to blend literature, learning, and lifestyle under its expansive programming. The Cookery Corner has emerged as a festival favourite, giving young attendees a chance to learn essential life skills while embracing creativity - and taste - in equal measure.

Next Creative Leaders 2025 invites entries from rising female talent

The One Club for Creativity has extended the deadline for its annual Next Creative Leaders competition to Monday, 30 June 2025, giving more time for rising female talent to apply. The free-to-enter initiative celebrates emerging female talent in advertising and design, offering a global platform for visibility, leadership, and long-term career growth. Now in its 10th year in 2025, Next Creative Leaders was developed in partnership with The 3% Movement and remains the only no-cost portfolio competition of its kind. It is open to copywriters, art directors, designers, associate creative directors, content creators, and newly promoted creative and design directors with less than one year in the role. Creative teams who are producing standout work are also encouraged to submit. Entrants are evaluated on four to six pieces of creative work, alongside a written reflection on how they – and their ideas – are pushing the industry forward. Judges look for work that demonstrates leadership, impact, and advocacy in areas such as diversity and mentorship. Winners receive a one-year individual membership to The One Club, free access to professional panels and mentorship events, and a complimentary ticket to a One Club development conference. Their work will be showcased on The One Club's website and social channels, with further media coverage and potential speaking opportunities at NCL events. Winners may also be invited to join juries across other One Club programmes. 'The One Club created its own inclusion and diversity department nearly 20 years ago, and has steadily increased programming around gender equity in the workplace,' said Kevin Swanepoel, CEO, The One Club. 'Next Creative Leaders is an important part of our programming because it identifies, elevates, and gives voice to those who are making a real difference, those who are opening the door and inspiring the next generation of creatives who follow in their footsteps.' This year's jury includes MENA-based creatives Enas Rashwan, Nayaab Rais, Ali Rez, and Rana Sadek. For more information visit the website:

Sony Music Middle East has announced a strategic alliance with Saudi-based entertainment company LuxuryKSA, aimed at nurturing and promoting Saudi Arabian music talent. The partnership strengthens Sony Music's regional presence and aligns with its long-term vision to grow Khaliji pop artists across the Middle East and on the global stage. The announcement comes amid a boom in the region's music industry. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has emerged as the fastest-growing music market globally for the second time in three years, registering a 22.8% increase in recorded music revenues in 2024, according to the IFPI Global Music Report 2025. Together, we will elevate their voices on regional and global stages and redefine the future of entertainment.' Shridhar Subramaniam, President for Asia and Middle East, Sony Music, added: 'The Middle East is a priority market for us, with Saudi Arabia at the centre of a cultural and creative transformation. Our partnership with LuxuryKSA is part of a broader strategy to deepen our roots in the region, champion local voices, and support sustained artist development. As the music industry in MENA continues to grow at pace, we are committed to working with partners to shape its future and bring the richness of the region's music to a global audience.' Rami Mohsen, Managing Director for Middle East, Sony Music, stated: 'LuxuryKSA is renowned for nurturing Saudi talent and positioning them on a regional and global scale. Through this partnership, we're working on building a talent incubator with LuxuryKSA in Saudi Arabia, designed to nurture and develop the next generation of stars. With artists' creativity our utmost priority, this partnership strengthens our local presence in Saudi Arabia and expands opportunities for our artists in a culturally rich and diverse region.'
