Snowplow Named 'Taylor Drift' May Be Coming To Clear A Road Near You
Massachusetts has a new snowplow superstar, and no matter what winter brings, it's ready for it. Thanks to a group of first-grade Swifties, a Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) snow vehicle is now officially dubbed 'Taylor Drift' - a name that slid past hundreds of other entries in a state-wide contest.
At a lively ceremony attended by the MassDOT Undersecretary of Transportation and Deputy Administrator, the newly-named plow was decked out in true pop royalty fashion, complete with a disco ball wearing a hat.

The young fans in Miss Perry's class at Dighton Elementary School got the full VIP experience, climbing inside the plow, honking its horn, and unveiling the Taylor Drift name and logo—featuring a snow cloud styled with blonde hair and bangs, just like the singer herself.
'We had over 900 entrants and you are one of 12 that won,' Undersecretary Hayes Morrison told the class.
Snow drifts are the result of wind pushing lighter snow around in the same way that sand is blown into dunes in the desert, according to weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Belles, 'You'll often see piles of snow pushed several times higher up against buildings or trees.' Other cleverly named plows joining the fleet this season include "Ice Ice Baby" and "Snowana." The full list of winners is posted on the MassDOT website.
Massachusetts isn't the only place embracing Swift-themed winter road warriors—Minnesota recently crowned its own Taylor Drift, where the name was the runaway winner in a similar contest. (Runner-up? The frosty-fantastic Clark W. Blizzwald.)
With a train of winter storms ahead for the U.S., Taylor Drift will no doubt need to be fearless in its mission to clear snow and ice, creating a safe path fit for your wildest dreams.

Construction on a new bridge has reduced traffic to one lane in both directions on a two-mile stretch of the Mass Pike on the Newton-Weston town line. All weekend long, traffic has been bumper to bumper in this area. It's all part of a massive bridge replacement project by the I-95 interchange. To take a live look at the current delays, head to the Mass 511 map. State Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver told WBZ-TV that the traffic will speed back up Monday morning when all the lanes are reopened. "That commute tomorrow should be pretty good for you after 5 a.m., once the road is fully restored," said Gulliver. "I'd expect a little bit of residual traffic to clear through and then should be a normal Monday morning commute any time after 5:15, 5:30." Gulliver advised commuters to delay the start of their day until after the roads reopen at 5 a.m. A second weekend of closures is planned for Friday, June 20, at 9 p.m. until Monday, June 23, at 5 a.m.

National Weather Service officials are expecting temperatures in the mid 80s Thursday and possible showers and thunderstorms later in the afternoon to night hours. Officials said scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to develop midafternoon into the evening in portions of north central and northeast Illinois, and northwest Indiana. The greatest storms are expected east of Interstate 39, officials said. Any storms that develop will be capable of producing destructive winds and hail, as well as a tornado, officials said. Late Thursday afternoon into the evening, there also is an elevated fire danger that may develop along and west of Interstate 39. There was an elevated fog risk in the morning hours Thursday in northeast Illinois but the fog was expected to dissipate as the day moves on. Hail up to 3 inches in diameter and winds up to 80 mph are a possibility if storms develop, officials said. On Thursday, a Beyonce performance is scheduled in Soldier Field so fans should watch for weather developments. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit Chicago before 9 p.m. Thursday, some expected to be severe, officials said. Thursday evening, temps in the low 60s are expected. Current conditions at O'Hare International Airport registered as fair at 75 degrees. Farther south at Midway Airport conditions are a few clouds at 76 degrees.
