Red Sox place Liam Hendriks on the injured list, recall Nick Burdi from Triple-A Worcester
BOSTON — Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks has been placed on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right hip. The Red Sox announced Friday the move is retroactive to Wednesday and that right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi had been recalled from Triple-A Worcester. CHICAGO – If Andrew Abbott could make all his starts against the Chicago Cubs this year, the Cincinnati Reds might be in first place. For now, the Reds' left-hander might have to settle for National League Pitcher of the Month honors in May and just maybe the first All-Star selection of his career. We don't control it anyway,' said Abbott, who twirled another seven scoreless innings Friday, May 30 as the Reds opened a three-game series at Wrigley Field with a 6-2 victory over the Cubs. Andrew Abbott struck out eight and allowed just one hit in seven scoreless innings Friday at Wrigley Field. Abbott lowered his season ERA to 1.51 after nine starts. 'I'm just going out and trying to do what I can do for the team: pitch as long as I can, help us win on that day,' he said. 'That's all I'm focusing on.' Abbott struck out eight and finished his 93-pitch start by retiring the final 15 batters he faced after allowing his only hit of the afternoon, a Justin Turner single to left. Eventually, the Reds bullpen survived the post-Abbott, late-inning nightmare that befell the group in the series a week earlier at Great American Ball Park – when the Cubs outscored the Reds 21-0 after the sixth inning in those three games. LHP Andrew Abbott – Did we mention Abbott's MLB-best ERA for May is the Reds' lowest ERA for a month since John Franco had a 0.30 ERA in August 1985? The only other Reds pitcher with a lower ERA than Abbott (0.55) for a month since that became an official stat in 1912 was Dolf Luque (0.50 in June 1923). His 1.51 ERA this season is the lowest for a Reds lefty in his first nine starts of a season since Dutch Ruether (1.23) in 1920. Advertisement 2. CF TJ Friedl – In addition to providing plus defense up the middle after missing most of last season with injuries, Friedl is hitting .467 with a .622 slugging percentage and 1.161 OPS since May 18. 3. Cincinnati Reds pitching depth faces another possible hit with looming Wade Miley decision
CHICAGO – The Cincinnati Reds might lose another starting pitching option by the time they get home this week for a three-game series against division-rival Milwaukee Brewers. Veteran left-hander Wade Miley, who threw 87 pitches across five good innings in Triple-A Friday, has a June 1 opt-out on the minor-league deal he signed with the Reds in January. Wade Miley has been building up arm strength for the Reds at Triple-A Louisville, but the veteran can opt out of his minor league deal on June 1. 'We have to make a decision,' manager Terry Francona said. Miley, 38, who is in the final stages of rehab from 2024 Tommy John surgery, isn't expected to stay in Triple-A in the organization if the Reds decide not to promote him. 'I don't think so,' Francona said. 'He'll have opportunities to pitch.' Several teams that consider themselves playoff contenders have significant needs for starting pitching, including the last two teams that employed Miley: the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs and the defending division-champ Milwaukee Brewers. Advertisement Miley, a former All-Star with 310 career starts and a 4.07 ERA, also has a reputation as a widely respected and popular clubhouse influence. Miley's split deal called for a base salary of $2.5 million (prorated) for time on the big-league roster. The Reds, who already have lost Carson Spiers (shoulder) and Rhett Lowder (oblique) to injuries for most or all of this season, don't appear to have an opening in a rotation manned by Andrew Abbott (1.51 ERA), Hunter Greene (2.36), Nick Martinez (3.48), Nick Lodolo (3.39) and Brady Singer (4.60). Further complicating the process is the fact Miley has had some short starts during his buildup, including one that lasted just two-thirds of an inning May 25.
