Cybercriminals spoof Araria SP's official mobile number for extortion; two arrested
According to the police, the accused were using mobile applications to spoof the SP's official number, making it appear on the recipient's phone screen during extortion calls. This deceptive technique allowed them to impersonate law enforcement and intimidate victims. An investigation int the fraud began after a local resident, Mohmed Taha, son of Mohmed Mujib, filed a complaint alleging that Rs 74,000 had been fraudulently withdrawn from his bank accounts on June 13, 2025.
The fraud was carried out by porting his mobile SIM without his authorisation.
Following the FIR, the SHO launched a scientific investigation by forming a special team. The team first apprehended Mohmed Asraf Ali, who confessed to the crime and revealed the involvement of his accomplice with Mohmed Imroz Alam. Both were subsequently arrested and sent to jail.
According to Sultana, the duo used mobile applications to clone SIM cards and gain access to victims' bank accounts.

In Mohmed Taha's case, they used this method to siphon off Rs 74,000. Additionally, they used spoofing apps to make extortion calls appear as if they were coming from the SP's number, thereby misleading and blackmailing unsuspecting citizens.
Spoofed apps can steal personal information, including passwords, financial data, and other sensitive details. "We are tracking those using these spoofing apps in the district. They will be brought to book soon," she said.
She further said that the police also recovered a cloned SIM card and two cellphones from the accused. All persons involved—including the complainant and the arrested cybercriminals—are residents of Araria district.

MPs express alarm over surge in online betting addiction among youth
Hyderabad/New Delhi: The Indian Parliament witnessed a passionate appeal for urgent action against the growing menace of online gaming and betting apps targeting youth. Rajya Sabha MP Dr K. Laxman raised the issue, emphasizing that these platforms—often disguised as entertainment or skill-based games—are rapidly addicting young Indians and driving many into debt and despair. 'Tragic stories have become common across states. In Hyderabad alone, suicide helplines reported a 60% surge in distress calls from betting addicts. In one shocking case, a young girl fell into a Rs 9 lakh debt trap after initial winnings on a casino app,' Laxman told fellow members. He warned that the glamorization of such platforms by celebrities and influencers is misleading impressionable users, and lax regulation allows the problem to proliferate unchecked. Stressing the urgency, Laxman called for a nationwide digital de-addiction awareness campaign to educate youth and families about the psychological and financial harms of online betting. 'Further bans on all betting and gambling platforms that jeopardize social and financial stability must be considered,' Dr Laxman said, warning, 'Let us act before a generation is lost, chasing illusions behind screens.'

HYDRAA reclaims Rs 400 crore public land in Madhapur
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Thursday removed large-scale encroachments in the Jubilee Enclave Layout in the Madhapur area. During the operation, encroachments on parks and roads, as well as illegal structures built on government land, were demolished, saving 16,000 square yards of land valued at around Rs 400 crore. According to HYDRAA, the layout, approved at 22.20 acres, has about 100 plots and includes four parks. Two of these parks, spanning around 8,500 sq. yards, were illegally occupied. Additionally, 5,000 sq. yards of road were encroached upon, and a hotel shed was illegally constructed on 300 sq. yards of government land. The government land is located opposite the metal Charminar on the Madhapur-Kondapur road. The layout was approved in 1995 and regularised by the government in 2006. According to residents' complaints filed during HYDRAA's 'Prajavani' programme, the parks were occupied by a person named Jaihind Reddy. HYDRAA ACP Srikanth said that following the orders of Commissioner A V Ranganath, officials conducted a site inspection, confirmed the encroachments, and carried out the demolition on Thursday. Police cases are now being registered against the encroachers. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Srikanth and Inspectors Rajasekhar and Balagopal. Immediately after, 'Government Property' boards were installed, and fencing was erected at the parks. Representatives of the Jubilee Enclave alleged that Jaihind Reddy had constructed the illegal hotel and was collecting up to Rs 4 lakh per month in rent. Residents questioned how park land, which was regularised in 2006, could be 'de-regularised' without the consent of the landowners. Locals welcomed HYDRAA's action, stating that it has provided relief by protecting the parks.
