'A brutal call' - why Chevalier has replaced 'best in world'
Who is Chevalier & what does he offer?
In making a decision that has surprised many in world football, Luis Enrique believes Chevalier will improve PSG even more, especially with his team's playing style. The French keeper has been likened to a five-a-side player due to the quality of his touch, vision and ability to break lines with his passing from the back. Chevalier can effectively turn into an outfield player for PSG when in possession as they look to build an attack from their own defensive line.Replacing Donnarumma will be tough, but he stepped up successfully as Lille's first choice in the 2022-23 season after just a season in Ligue 2 with Valenciennes. Pressure should not be an issue. Chevalier was named Ligue 1's best goalkeeper last term with 11 clean sheets as his side finished fifth, while earning a call-up to France's senior squad.Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told BBC Radio 5 Live: "The goalkeeper situation is a huge decision from Luis Enrique. Gianluigi Donnarumma is the best shot stopper and he is the best version of the older-style goalkeeper, but they have been replaced by the modern-day keeper who play in the defensive third."Luis Enrique is leaning into the way that modern teams want to play and build from the back. PSG are looking for that ninth degree, that tiny little bit of percentage of advantage and with Lucas Chevalier they feel they can further refine their style."Signs of what Chevalier will bring were seen during his debut against Spurs, with PSG opting to go short on goal-kicks and showing no fear when using him in general play.He should have done better with Cristian Romero's header that put the Premier League side 2-0 ahead, but showed great reflexes in a stunning save to push Joao Palhinha's effort on to the bar, although Micky van de Ven netted the rebound for Spurs' opener.Chevalier then stopped Van de Ven's penalty in the shootout as PSG won after a superb comeback from 2-0 down.It was a bold move by Luis Enrique to drop Donnarumma and turn to the Frenchman, but one that could prove a masterstroke in the future if Chevalier lives up to great expectations.
Why is Donnarumma going?
But why would a goalkeeper, favourite to be crowned the world's best this year, be frozen out like this?Luis Enrique has simply stated he wanted a "different profile" to what Donnarumma gave them. Before the Super Cup, the PSG boss clarified it was "100%" his decision to cut the Italian from his squad, with Donnarumma "disappointed and disheartened".The 26-year-old arrived from AC Milan on a free transfer in 2021 and enhanced his reputation in Paris. But with football continuing to evolve, goalkeepers are not just shot stoppers and used as deep-lying playmakers to open up a new dimension of play. This is why Ederson has proved so valuable for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side have been linked with Donnarumma, but Laurens said he is "not a Pep Guardiola-type of keeper"."Manchester City are the only club in for Gianluigi Donnarumma at the moment," he added. "I'm amazed by it. But he is not good in the air and not great on the ball."

European football: Vitinha earns opening-day victory for Ligue 1 champions PSG at Nantes
Paris St Germain began their Ligue 1 title defence with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Nantes on Sunday thanks to a second-half goal from their Portugal midfielder Vitinha. Fresh from their Super Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur in a shootout on Wednesday, PSG lacked their usual urgency in front of goal, going in at half-time without having carved out any real chances against a disciplined Nantes defence. PSG eventually broke the deadlock when Vitinha's strike from distance in the 67th minute took a deflection off Nantes defender Chidozie Awaziem and curled into the far corner. Nantes then began to concede more space and PSG thought they had doubled their lead minutes later through Gonçalo Ramos but the striker's effort was ruled out for offside. Paris FC's first top-flight game in 46 years ended in a 1-0 defeat at Angers, who took an early lead through Esteban Lepaul and held on despite being reduced to 10 men. Lepaul sprinted ahead of defender Timothée Kolodziejczak to reach Jordan Lefort's long ball just outside the box and scored with a calm right-foot finish after nine minutes. Angers midfielder Louis Mouton was sent off for a late challenge on Kolodziejczak in the 57th minute and Paris FC, who dominated possession and had more than twice as many shots as their opponents, pressed hard for an equaliser. The hosts survived when Alimami Gory failed to meet Ilan Kebbal's cross in front of goal, while a free-kick from just outside the box was sent wide by forward Mathieu Cafaro in the 90th minute, ending the visitors' hopes of salvaging a draw. Fellow promoted side Metz also lost 1-0 away at Strasbourg as Joaquín Panichelli scored late, Auxerre secured a 1-0 home win over Lorient thanks to Lassine Sinayoko's strike and Lille lost a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw at Brest. Lille's Olivier Giroud scored 11 minutes into his first Ligue 1 game since 2012 and Hákon Arnar Haraldsson made it 2-0 but Kamory Doumbia then scored twice to level. Ngal'ayel Mukau got Lille's third but Julien Le Cardinal equalised. In Germany, a first-round German Cup match between Schalke and hosts Lokomotiv Leipzig was suspended on Sunday after visiting winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei alleged racial abuse from home fans. The match, which finished 1-0 to Schalke, was suspended for almost five minutes after Antwi-Adjei informed the referee he was racially abused by spectators. An announcement on the stadium PA was made condemning racist abuse. After the match resumed, the winger was booed repeatedly by the home fans. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion Speaking after the match, Antwi-Adjei said: 'I don't want to name the words that were spoken. I'm not the type of person who goes home and cries, but I find it disappointing you still hear this on the pitch these days. I signalled to the linesman that something had happened. It's the least I could do. I'm a normal person. This is not appropriate.' Antwi-Adjei was born in Germany but has represented Ghana three times at international level. A spokesperson from Lokomotiv Leipzig said the insults could not be verified. 'We have a member of staff sitting exactly where the player was standing. He didn't hear anything. The linesman probably didn't hear anything either,' the spokesperson told Sky Germany. Lokomotiv Leipzig have previously come under fire for supporter groups with right-wing ideological links. In 2018, the club sacked two youth coaches for taking a picture of a group of young players performing a Nazi salute.

It's all well and good spending £200million on Sesko and Co. but Arsenal defeat exposes a HUGE hole Man Utd need to fill
MANCHESTER UNITED have splashed the cash this summer but the goalkeeper position remains a concern. Here are SunSport's key takeaways from the narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal. 2 2 No 1 ISSUE United have been linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma and David de Gea in recent weeks, and surely they will sign a keeper before the window shuts. Ruben Amorim has faith in Andre Onana — even if a lot of the fans do not — but he did not consider him ready to start here. The Cameroonian has missed the whole of pre-season with a hamstring injury. So Altay Bayindir, who has played throughout the build-up to the season, got the nod — and ended up costing his team the game. He should have been stronger under pressure from William Saliba and flapped a corner on to the head of Riccardo Calafiori. Bayindir has had problems with set-pieces before. Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox have two weeks to come up with a solution before the end of the transfer window. NO GOALS — AGAIN United mustered just 44 goals in the Prem last season — and here they were starting with a blank again. The Red Devils have spent £200million sprucing up their forward line this summer, and there were encouraging signs from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Ex-Prem ref says there was no foul on Man Utd's goalkeeper by William Saliba during Arsenal loss But new £74m centre-forward Benjamin Sesko stayed on the bench until the 65th minute. On a couple of occasions before then there were crosses into the box but nobody there to put them away. Amorim said on Friday he believes Sesko can be United's No 9 for many years to come — and that is why they spent so heavily on him. So it seemed a strange call to leave him on the bench for so long. Clearly the fans agreed as he was given a huge ovation when he arrived. A couple of late half-chances went begging but the Slovenian did enough to show he will be a threat. MIDFIELD STILL AN ISSUE United have abandoned their bid to land Carlos Baleba at least until next summer because of Brighton's asking price. There is an interest in Sporting's Morten Hjulmand, while United are one of several clubs who admire Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace. But there is a chance they will not sign another outfield player, and fans will be worried about the options in midfield. Casemiro was excellent in Europe last season but did not have the same impact in Prem matches, while we are still waiting to see the best of Manuel Ugarte. United are going to be more exciting to watch this season — that is clear already — but will they still have a soft centre?

Sky Sports pundits split over Premier League title winner after predicting their top five - as Roy Keane names key to Liverpool retaining their title
insisted Liverpool will need to bring more players in if they are to retain their Premier League title this season. Following Arsenal 's win over Man United on Sunday, Keane and fellow Sky Sports pundits Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge were tasked with giving their predictions for the 2025-26 campaign. The trio each selected a top five, but none could agree on which team will have their hands on the trophy come the end of May. In his predictions, Keane backed Mikel Arteta to finally get Arsenal over the hump and claim the title after three consecutive second-placed finishes. Keane then placed Liverpool second, followed by Man City and Newcastle, with Chelsea rounding out his top five. The usually unwavering Irishman qualified his prediction however, by noting that Liverpool will be able to make it two wins on the bounce if they are able to bolster their squad before the end of the transfer window. 'Depending on signings, if we're allowed to change our mind, I'm convinced that Liverpool can get another centre half then I would go with Liverpool,' Keane said on Sky Sports. The Reds have enjoyed a productive summer in the transfer market as Arne Slot looks to build on the success of his first year on Merseyside. Hugo Ekitike has already made an impact for the Reds alongside marquee arrival Florian Wirtz and the club are understood to be still pursuing a move for wantaway Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. As far as defensive reinforcements are concerned, the club have been repeatedly linked with a move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. Meanwhile former Man City defender Richards backed his boyhood club to return to the top of the mountain after a poor campaign by their standards last season. However, Keane insisted that he feels Pep Guardiola's side still time to get back to their best. 'I never usually bet against Pep and City,' Keane added. 'I just think maybe defensively, and I know that they've thrown James Trafford in there, and I think he's a really top goalkeeper but I just have that gut feeling that I think Arsenal might do it this year. 'But as I said, I think if Liverpool get a center half, and I would definitely change my mind on Liverpool. 'Even looking at Liverpool, sometimes when Liverpool aren't even added, or even City, when they're not at their best, they'll still score two or three goals.' Sturridge joined Richards in claiming one of his former clubs will go all the way, as the ex-Liverpool striker claimed the Reds have what it takes. Like Keane though, the 35-year-old claimed that the club would benefit from bolstering their squad depth. '[Liverpool] a strong squad, but I do think they need maybe one or two additions to strengthen up.' Sturridge said. 'I think they need a defender, and, of course, one more attacker. They're a little bit short in both of those areas.'
