Claims of PBB infighting baseless, says PDP Senior VP
SIBU (July 19): Bawang Assan assemblyman and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Senior Vice President Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has dismissed claims of a power struggle within Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) as baseless rumours.
He said PBB president and Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and PBB deputy president and Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, continue to work closely in governing the state and strengthening the party.
'Datuk Amar Awang Tengah has widely been seen as loyal and cooperative, accepting the role of Deputy Premier and continuing to work closely with Abang Johari, particularly on resource development, land matters, trade and investment and also on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) negotiations with the federal government,' Wong told reporters yesterday on his view as a senior politician pertaining to the claims of a power struggle brewing in PBB reported by an online news portal.
He added that Awang Tengah, seen more as a technocrat and strategic planner than a populist, has consistently supported Abang Johari's leadership.
'Under Abang Johari, PBB/GPS has been remarkably stable and powerful. There is no such thing within PBB like establishing power base for factional infighting,' he said.
To illustrate the longstanding relationship between the two leaders, Wong showed reporters a photo taken in Cambodia in 2014 of himself, the late Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, Abang Johari, and Awang Tengah holding hands.

'I remember vividly that the late Tun Abdul Taib, dubbed the father of modern Sarawak, wanted both Abang Johari and Awang Tengah to work hand-in-hand to maintain the political stability in Sarawak.
'This was Tun Abdul Taib's insistence. I am sure both Abang Johari and Awang Tengah will work hard to abide with the words of wisdom from Tun Abdul Taib.
'And now, Abang Johari is the Premier of Sarawak, and I am very sure that Awang Tengah will go all out to support him.
'This historic photograph from 2014 captures the strong bonding between Abang Johari and Awang Tengah,' said Wong.
Echoing PBB information chief Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Wong reiterated that PBB has always upheld a culture of respecting its leadership.

Abun Sui Anyit KUCHING (July 21): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Senator Abun Sui Anyit has expressed concern over what he described as persistent imbalances in Sarawak's development and governance in his Sarawak Day message. Abun said development in the state remains uneven, particularly between the coastal regions and the interior. 'Likewise, government administration—especially at the management and political leadership levels—remains imbalanced, with certain ethnic groups appearing to dominate governance and administration in Sarawak. Is this situation orchestrated or simply coincidental?' he questioned in the message. Despite these issues, the PKR Hulu Rajang division chief said it is not too late for Sarawakians to address the situation before it worsens. 'I pray that Sarawak continues to prosper within a fair and just Malaysia, and may the spirit of July 22 continue to ignite the patriotism of the sons and daughters of the Land of the Hornbill towards this region (Sarawak) and to our nation, Malaysia,' he said. 'Sarawak is a region rich in culture, natural resources, and a strong spirit of unity. Therefore, Sarawak Day not only celebrates independence but is also a time to reflect on our journey in pursuing justice, autonomy, and the rights enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' he added. Abun also highlighted the significance of July 22, 1963, when Sarawak attained self-rule from British colonial administration, which he described as a crucial step toward the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963. He nonetheless noted there has been confusion and questions as to why July 22 is often referred to as Sarawak Day rather than 'Sarawak Independence Day' as gazetted when it was declared as a public holiday in 2016. He said the term 'Sarawak Day' is the official phrase used in government documents since its initial declaration in 2016, although from a historical and factual perspective, this day marks Sarawak's independence and freedom from colonialism. 'The choice of terminology may have been made out of political caution and federal sensitivities in the past. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that the people of Sarawak deserve to know and call our history by its proper name. MIRI (July 21): The Sarawak government has allocated a total of RM565 million to the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that all Sarawakians can worship in environments that are safe, dignified and comfortable, regardless of their faith. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said of the total sum, RM475 million has already been channelled through Unifor to support the development and enhancement of houses of worship across Sarawak. 'These efforts are anchored in the principle of social inclusivity,' he said in his speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the Interfaith Thanksgiving event held in conjunction with the Sarawak Day celebration at a hotel here last night.
