Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips had a front-row seat for quarterback Josh Allen's first few years in the league, as the two were in the same 2018 Bills draft class.
Now with the Vikings, Phillips is watching the ascendance of another young quarterback in J.J. McCarthy. Phillips noted that he can see some parallels, which he talked about in a press conference earlier this week.
'I've commented before about [how] he came to me the week after his injury to try to learn more about the defense,' Phillips said, via Will Ragatz of SI.com 'Asking those great questions. He's really stepped up in the personal power role [this year]. In the locker room, I'm constantly seeing him go up to new guys, to new players, dapping each other up, sitting on the couches, and just having conversation. Where last year it was off to rehab, off to meetings. He understands that we have to build a family here and that you can't have unique results without unique relationships.
'And then man, he's got some confidence. And he reminds me of Josh Allen when I was with him in Buffalo, coming into his own and understanding the power that he has to lead this organization, and he's doing a fantastic job doing that.'
McCarthy has a long way to go to get to a similar level of performance as the 2024 AP MVP. But that kind of name drop from Phillips illustrates that McCarthy is going about things the right way this offseason.

Phillips (4-4, 3.71 ERA) will have a full week's rest entering the start for the Vols (46-17) against the Razorbacks (46-13) on June 6 (5 p.m. ET ESPN) in Game 1 of the super regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He made his most recent start on May 31 against Cincinnati. Phillips threw 98 pitches against Cincinnati, striking out eight and allowed three runs in 6⅔ innings. Phillips started Tennessee's opener during its regular-season series at Arkansas, which was UT's first win at Baum-Walker Stadium under coach Tony Vitello. He allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks in 4⅓ innings. He struck out three in the 10-7 win on May 15. Liam Doyle likely is lined up to start Game 2 against the Razorbacks on June 8 (3 p.m. ET, ESPN). Doyle (10-3, 2.84 ERA) has been Tennessee's Game 1 starter in all but two instances this season, but he pitched twice in the Knoxville Regional including in the June 2 final against Wake Forest. The SEC pitcher of the year threw 135 pitches between his 104-pitch start against Miami (Ohio) in the May 30 regional opener and his 31-pitch save against Wake Forest to seal UT's fifth straight regional title. Doyle had his rockiest start of the season at Arkansas on May 16. He allowed eight runs with six earned runs on 11 hits and two walks in 4⅔ innings. He struck out 10. The Vols will have a fully loaded bullpen ready to go behind Phillips in the first game and again behind Doyle in the second game. This Big 10 school is putting its golf course up for sale at year's end The University of Minnesota's golf course, named after a coach who took the school's program to two conference titles, will close at this golf season's end and is expected to be sold, according to a release sent out by the university on Friday. Les Bolstad Golf Course, located just a few miles to the northeast of the school's main campus, is expected to be put on the market as costs to maintain the facility have become too steep. 'We recognize this course holds generations of memories for our community. This decision reflects careful consideration and was made in light of today's challenging financial environment,' said Calvin Phillips, the university's vice president for student affairs, in a statement that was released Friday. 'As a public university, we have a responsibility to ensure that our land and resources are aligned with our core mission: supporting students, advancing research, and serving the state of Minnesota.' According to a story in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the school is not looking to sell the adjacent John W. Mooty Golf Facility and short game outdoor training area near the golf course, where the Gophers' men's and women's teams practice. The school hosts its Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club, which sits about 40 minutes west of the campus. Here's more from the Star Tribune: The 140-acre course on Larpenteur Avenue in Falcon Heights will remain open for the rest of the 2025 season, but will not reopen next spring, the statement said. Phillips said the school notified the Board of Regents of its intended actions, and sent a letter to golfers announcing the news. 'We deeply appreciate your support of the golf course and the University of Minnesota,' Phillips wrote in the letter to golfers. Named after Les Bolstad, who won two Big Ten golf championships and then coached the school's teams for 30 years, the course needs investment of nearly $10 million to tackle deferred maintenance and investment to keep the it viable, according to the course's website. A sale price has yet to be determined. The U will obtain two appraisals to determine fair market value, the school said. Falcon Heights, the Minneapolis suburb where the course lies, could potentially rezone the site for future use.

After racking up 8.5 and seven sacks in his first two seasons, Phillips was poised for a big leap in year three.
