Harrison Phillips: J.J. McCarthy reminds me of Josh Allen understanding power he has to lead
Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips had a front-row seat for quarterback Josh Allen's first few years in the league, as the two were in the same 2018 Bills draft class. Now with the Vikings, Phillips is watching the ascendance of another young quarterback in J.J. McCarthy. Phillips noted that he can see some parallels, which he talked about in a press conference earlier this week. 'I've commented before about [how] he came to me the week after his injury to try to learn more about the defense,' Phillips said, via Will Ragatz of 'Asking those great questions. He's really stepped up in the personal power role [this year]. In the locker room, I'm constantly seeing him go up to new guys, to new players, dapping each other up, sitting on the couches, and just having conversation. Where last year it was off to rehab, off to meetings. He understands that we have to build a family here and that you can't have unique results without unique relationships. 'And then man, he's got some confidence. And he reminds me of Josh Allen when I was with him in Buffalo, coming into his own and understanding the power that he has to lead this organization, and he's doing a fantastic job doing that.' McCarthy has a long way to go to get to a similar level of performance as the 2024 AP MVP. But that kind of name drop from Phillips illustrates that McCarthy is going about things the right way this offseason.

Lamar Jackson's deal is a Ravens masterpiece hiding in plain sight
Lamar Jackson's deal is a Ravens masterpiece hiding in plain sight The Baltimore Ravens' best player may also be their biggest bargain. When the NFL reaches its 200th season, new periodicals will be written. A second centennial team will be announced, we will certainly mention Baltimore Ravens legends. A team representing another century of football could very well include one Lamar Jackson. He still has work to do to make that inclusion a guarantee, but the two-time MVP knows that. The 2025-26 campaign doubles as his eighth at the professional level, and the resume is already very impressive. Action Jackson is a two-time Bert Bell Award winner. He's a three-time First-Team All-Pro and a four-time Pro Bowler. He led the NFL in touchdown passes tossed during the 2019 season. He led all of pro football in passer rating. One would think an asset with that resume would be so expensive that his team could barely afford to pay his salary, but the Ravens found a way to reward brilliance without bankruptcy. On April 27, 2023, he inked a five-year contract worth $260 million with $185 million guaranteed. Two years later, that one is still being viewed as a masterclass in contract writing. Lamar Jackson's deal with the Ravens continues to earn rave reviews. At the time of his deal's announcement, Jackson passed Jalen Hurts as the highest-paid player in NFL history just ten days after the Philadelphia Eagles star agreed to terms in his extension. Jackson's record-setting number would be surpassed by Justin Herbet three months later, but as we enter another season of pro football, the consensus is familiar. It's hard to fathom the Ravens getting this level of production without setting the franchise back a la Deshaun Watson's deal with the Cleveland Browns. FOX Sports' Henry McKenna recently evaluated the NFL's mega QB contracts and agreed that Baltimore is getting a steal in what they are handing to Lamar Jackson. "Here's a guy who could easily be sitting up there with (Dak) Prescott — or, at the very least, with (Joe) Burrow and (Josh) Allen. Certainly, Jackson was sitting atop those other signal-callers when he received the AP MVP for the 2023 season, his second such award. Hate on him if you want. Compare him to (Patrick) Mahomes if you want. Jackson is one of the most dominant football players in the league. The Ravens are enjoying all that impressive play without having to pay top dollar." While mentioning Lamar's brilliance, we are often steered in the direction of noting what is perhaps the most overstated discussion in his evaluation: his lack of success during the postseason. It's fair to ask questions. It's fair to talk about pressure or demand more of one of the league's best players. It is also fair to remind the detractors of a little NFL history. Peyton Manning wasn't seen as a great postseason performer until he was. John Elway wasn't regarded as a great postseason performer until he proved to be one. Lamar needs that Lombardi Trophy. He knows that, and it is fair to wager that it won't elude him forever. He has shone bright under the bright lights. He is too good and too talented to miss the mark forever, and thanks to Baltimore's ingenuity in how they have structured his deal, they have ensured themselves that they can put the proper talent around him. That's perhaps the best part of this entire story.

The Jets didn't have a Super Bowl win since III and were hoping Favre would bring his magic to New York. He didn't. Brett Favre Favre lasted one season as quarterback of the Jets, leading the team to a 9-7 record. However, his accuracy had diminished as he threw 22 interceptions against 22 touchdowns while passing for 3,472 yards. At 39, he no longer was the elite quarterback he was in Green Bay. He tore a tendon in his biceps in December. Favre informed the Jets it might be time to look in another direction at quarterback. For the umpteenth time, he retired. The Jets released Favre in April. Brett Favre Another short-lived retirement saw Favre sign with the Minnesota Vikings, NFC North rivals of the Packers. He sparkled in his first season with Minnesota, throwing for 4,202 yards and 33 touchdowns against seven picks. Favre was concussed in a game against the Chicago Bears the following season, effectively ending his NFL career. He was 5-8 as a starter in 2010 with 11 TD passes and 19 picks. In 2013, the St. Louis Rams asked him to come out of retirement but he declined, citing concussions absorbed during his career. Brett Favre Favre finished his NFL career with 6,300 completions, 71.838 passing yards and 508 touchdown passes. His 336 interceptions thrown are the most by anyone in league history. He also started 321 consecutive games. Brett Favre Favre was in New York for one season and he became the point of a scandal that blew up throughout the country. He was alleged to have sexted and left inappropriate voicemails for Jennifer Sterger, a "Jets GameDay Host." While forensics failed to prove he sent the photographs, Favre was fined $50,000 for failure to cooperate with the investigation. The Mississippi scandal broke when it was found that Favre was paid $1.1 million for two speeches he did not make. There was also news of trying to divert funds to Southern Miss to build a volleyball facility. Favre's daughter was attending the school and on the team. ·

John Harbaugh: Ravens have had internal discussions about a Lamar Jackson extension
A couple of years ago, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh sat down at his media availability at the annual league meeting just after quarterback Lamar Jackson made his trade request public. All of that consternation is now well in the rearview mirror, as Jackson signed a five-year contract about a month later. He's won an MVP and been named an AP first-team All-Pro in the two seasons since. But Jackson's contract came up again at the league meeting on Monday, as the quarterback's cap number is set to balloon to $70 million in 2026. While that's a year off, Harbaugh told reporters at this year's league meeting the franchise has had some internal conversations about an extension for the quarterback. 'How far along that is or whatever, I don't know,' Harbaugh said. 'But I definitely think it's an obvious point that you're making, that's going to continue to have to be addressed, really, with all those guys. You've got to just kind of manage that dance — that salary-cap dance. And Lamar is the main part of that because he's the franchise player. So, that's a possibility I think. 'Sooner or later, it definitely is going to have to happen.' Harbaugh added that once Jackson gets a new deal, he'll once again be the league's highest-paid player. Jackson, 28, put together arguably his best season in 2024, completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 4,172 yards with 41 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed for 915 yards with four TDs, averaging 6.6 yards per carry. A two-time AP MVP, Jackson is set to count $43.5 million against the cap in 2025.
