
'Lack of transparency' over Wakefield Independent School closure
An independent school which has confirmed its imminent closure has been criticised by parents for "a lack of transparency" over the decision to shut.In a letter to families, Wakefield Independent School said that following a period of consultation it would close "with profound regret" on 3 July, blaming VAT on school fees, falling pupil numbers and other "financial pressures".Helen Purdy, whose 14-year-old son Leon is a pupil, said the news was a shock and parents should have been informed sooner.In the letter, the school owner and chairman of the board of directors, Philip Hardy, said it had "explored all possible avenues to mitigate the impact" of the changes.
Mrs Purdy said: "You can't fault the teachers and staff but the way it's been managed has been terrible. We had no idea this was coming. "There's been no communication really from the school since this happened and we feel like we've just been left by ourselves to figure out what to do next."Mrs Purdy said Leon had thrived at the school but it was disappointing his time there had ended in such a way.
'Heartbreaking decision'
"There hasn't been a lot of transparency to be honest since this first came out in May," she added."They should have been more open with parents about what has been going on behind the scenes so we had a chance to decide what to do for the best."Mrs Purdy said she had chosen to send Leon to Wakefield Independent School because of his health problems and it had been a "wonderful environment" for him.She said because the fees were low in comparison to those of other nearby private schools which were more than twice as much, remaining in the independent sector was not an option for the family."There are a lot of pupils at the school with additional needs and there's just not that kind of support and provision in a lot of state schools."Another parent, Suzy McCartney, said her 13-year-old son Aaron had flourished as a pupil there and the decision to close was "heartbreaking". "I do feel for the school but I do think they should have been more upfront about the difficulties rather than just sending a letter out saying school was closing."The school said the " difficult decision" had been made "after a comprehensive review of the school's financial situation", according to the letter.As well as the VAT on fees and rises in NI contributions, it said "an increase in business rates along with minimum wage increases had made it unsustainable for Wakefield Independent to continue operating into a new academic year".
The school also said it had been served with a notice from its landlord, the Nostell Estate, to propose a new lease, which had contributed to difficulties.The letter said it was providing support to staff members and was "working hard to support children and parents in choosing schools across all the local authorities we serve and to make the transition process as smooth as possible".A spokesman for the Nostell Estate said they were saddened about the closure and sympathised "with parents and families who have been placed in a difficult position".The spokesman said the estate had "actively supported the school for more than 30 years" and had been "trying to agree new leases with the school".They added: "We put forward a number of suggestions to assist them and were disappointed that the school could not agree to our proposals."We reluctantly served the school with a non-hostile formal notice that set out a timeframe in which the estate and the school could agree a new lease. "We wanted the school to stay. We were only three months into that 12-month period when the school announced its prospective closure."The school is the latest in a number of others across Yorkshire to announce its closure.Both Fulneck School in Pudsey and Queen Margaret School for Girls' in York have announced their closures because of financial difficulties. Wakefield Independent School did not respond to a request for further comment.

AO World looking to automation and offshoring in face of wage cost surge
Online electricals retailer AO World has revealed plans to use artificial intelligence and to offshore more work overseas in a bid to slash costs after seeing its wage bill surge. The group revealed late last year that it was facing around an extra £8 million in costs a year from April's higher national insurance contributions and minimum wage rise. It said on unveiling results on Wednesday that wage costs are set to keep rising over the next few years, 'so we will increasingly look to mitigate these costs through automation, outsourcing and offshoring'. Founder and chief executive John Roberts told the PA news agency that the group had no plans to cut jobs and was recruiting staff, but said some of these would be likely to be outside of the UK. He said: 'We don't have any plans to get rid of people or have any plans for redundancies. 'We're on a recruitment drive across the business.' But Mr Roberts added that 'not all will be in the UK'. 'While the costs with legs walking into the business keep rising, then the motivation to invest more in efforts to try to offset that are increased,' he said. The group already offshores some roles abroad and said it was looking to increase this, though Mr Roberts stressed service would have to be 'at the right standard'. The chief executive warned last autumn when the extra costs were announced in the budget that prices would probably have to rise, but he told PA they had not risen significantly as the group looks to remain competitive. The comments came as AO World revealed record annual profits, cheering the success of its membership scheme and surging sales. The group reported a better-than-expected 32% rise in underlying pre-tax profits to £45 million for the year to March 31. Including its recently acquired Music Magpie business, underlying profits rose 27% to £44 million. The group saw like-for-like sales lift 7% to £1.11 billion and said it was 'confident' of another sales rise in the new financial year. Sales were boosted by the deal to buy Music Magpie last October for around £10 million, with AO World saying this added £30 million to revenues. It also hailed its membership scheme for helping drive sales, as well as moves to broaden its product range to about 9,000 items. AO World said: 'Despite the wider macroeconomic challenges, particularly employment cost increases, our objectives remain unchanged and we are confident in our ability to continue to grow revenue, alongside group adjusted pre-tax profit of £40 million to £50 million.'

UK politics live: Labour attacks Tories over ‘appalling mess' of HS2 with billions wasted and delays past 2033
The Conservatives wasted billions of pounds on the severely delayed HS2 line which will not open until beyond the deadline of 2033, the Labour government will say. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to to say she is drawing a 'line in the sand' over the beleaguered rail project after years of badly negotiated contracts and multiple design changes. 'Billions of pounds of taxpayers' money has been wasted by constant scope changes, ineffective contracts and bad management,' Ms Alexander will tell the House of Commons. 'It's an appalling mess. But it's one we will sort out.' She is due to announce the findings of two reviews into what has gone wrong with the project, as well as address allegations of fraud by contractors to HS2. The high-speed railway was initially estimated to cost £37.5bn in 2013, but in June last year, it was revealed that the line between London and Birmingham alone would hit £66bn. Housing and planning minister Matthew Pennycook said: 'Frankly, when it comes to HS2, in some ways we're a bit of a laughing stock around the world in terms of how we handle infrastructure.'
