The aspiring app developers of today no longer have to be fluent in coding. Instead, many are describing apps into existence using plain English.
In a world increasingly fueled by the rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence, user-friendly large language models like ChatGPT and Claude are now able to transform plain-language requests into working computer code, enabling novice programmers to cobble together programs that would otherwise be above their pay grade.
It's a phenomenon that's been dubbed 'vibe coding,' which OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, who is widely credited with coining the term earlier this year, described as the type of coding 'where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists.'
'I ask for the dumbest things like 'decrease the padding on the sidebar by half' because I'm too lazy to find it,' Karpathy wrote in a February X post. 'When I get error messages I just copy paste them in with no comment, usually that fixes it.'
AI-powered coding platforms like Cursor and Replit, which advertise themselves as allowing users to code using only text prompts, have made it even easier for people to deploy web and mobile apps without ever formulating their own lines of code.
'We're at the stage where [AI tools] have become very democratized, and you don't need any technical background,' said Nadia Ben Brahim Maazaoui, who left her career in hospitality management several years ago to stay at home with her young daughter.
When Ben Brahim Maazaoui, 36, began delving into generative AI in recent years, she found AI models useful for things like making vision boards and guiding meditations. But for her daughter's fourth birthday, she decided to get a bit more ambitious: She used ChatGPT to build what she calls a personalized 'robot friend' for the child.
It's an AI-powered chatbot that lives on her phone and is tailored to be kid-friendly, she said. When they use it together, they like to have voice conversations and will sometimes activate the camera function to show it things around the house.
The Tunisian mother, who's now based in California, said the 'robot friend' would help her tell bedtime stories and teach her daughter words in English — such as the names of animals they saw on TV — that she struggled to recall on her own. It also helped get her daughter to brush her teeth without protest.
'He makes these cute voices and he would convince her in like 30 seconds,' Ben Brahim Maazaoui said. 'And he'd do something for me too: like for the brushing, he would say, 'Mommy, can you please give her something to watch while you're brushing her teeth?' And I'm like, I did not think of that.'
The rise of such technologies has made software development accessible to people who've never earned computer science degrees or attended coding bootcamps. But they're also limited in their capabilities, often producing outputs laden with errors that require the user to either fix the code themselves or to keep making requests and hope for the best.
Lenard Flören, a Germany-based art director at an advertising agency, said he quickly realized that trying to create his dream fitness app with one lengthy prompt would lead to a plethora of bugs that 'neither ChatGPT nor my clueless self had any chance of solving.'
'Like every stereotypical, overconfident guy, I thought I could do it better [than the other apps on the market]. Which, obviously, I couldn't,' said Flören, 28, who had no prior coding experience. 'But I had already seen posts of people building apps with AI, so I thought I'd give it a try and see how far I could get.'
Flören, who ended up creating the personalized workout tracking app he wanted, said he learned to break the process down into bits. It helped, he said, when he began using the AI model as a tool to teach himself how to code along the way.
In recent months, vibe coders have proliferated in online communities, particularly on platforms like Reddit and Discord, where many like to share their projects and trade tips.
For Fay Robinett, the 8-year-old daughter of Cloudflare executive Ricky Robinett, building apps with AI has become a casual hobby outside of school. The first chatbot she built, coded using the AI tool Cursor, was one modeled after her own personality. Then, she made one that talks like Harry Potter. More recently, she used Anthropic's agentic Claude Code tool to build a theme park simulator.
'I also made an app that was like a list that helped me do all my morning stuff, like brush my teeth and go to the bathroom. And I got points when I checked them off,' Robinett said. 'So then if I got, like, 100 points, I could code with Daddy or something, and then if I got 1,000 points, I could go to Governors Island.'
Beyond sheer curiosity, a growing cohort of everyday people now also say they are trying to vibe-code their problems away.
Rishab Jain, a neuroscience student at Harvard University, said he used Replit, an automated app developer that uses an AI agent to code users' requests, to build a smart rolodex to keep track of his network. He also created a program that translates ancient texts from his religion, Jainism, into English, so that diaspora practitioners who've lost touch with the language can read them.
'I totally imagine small problems here or there where you would usually say, 'Hey, is there an app I can download for that? Oh, no, there's not.' Or maybe there is an app, but it costs $20 a month, something like that,' Jain, 20, said. 'Now you can just make it and personalize it for you within maybe an hour. And I find that to be really fascinating.'

Commonly used non-cancer drugs could help in the treatment of the disease, an 'AI-scientist' has discovered. It seems that technology is reaching new heights, as an AI-powered 'scientist' has made a significant discovery. Working alongside human researchers, the AI model GPT-4 (not to be confused with ChatGPT) has suggested that combinations of cheap and safe drugs could also be effective at treating cancer. The research team, led by the University of Cambridge, used the GPT-4 large language model (LLM) to sift through extensive heaps of scientific literature in order to identify potential new cancer drugs. It was found that drugs for conditions such as high cholesterol and alcohol dependence could potentially kill cancer cells, in research results published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. ‌ The researchers asked GPT-4 to identify potential new drug combinations that could have an impact on a type of breast cancer cell which is commonly used in medical research. They instructed the 'AI scientist' to avoid standard cancer drugs and identify medications that would attack cancer cells without harming healthy cells. ‌ They also prompted the AI model to prioritise drugs that were affordable and approved by regulators. When GPT-4 had made its suggestions, the chosen drugs were then tested by human scientists to measure their effectiveness against breast cancer cells. It was found that three of the 12 drug combinations suggested by GPT-4 worked better than current breast cancer drugs. The AI model then learned from these tests and suggested a further four combinations, three of which also showed promising results. Simvastatin (commonly used to lower cholesterol) and disulfiram (used in alcohol dependence) stood out against breast cancer cells. And while these drugs are not traditionally associated with cancer care, they could be used as potential cancer treatments- although they would first have to go through extensive clinical trials. ‌ The researchers have emphasised that AI is not a replacement for scientists, but that supervised AI researchers have the potential to accelerate discovery in areas like cancer research. Models like GPT-4 have been known to return results that aren't true. ‌ But in scientific research, these incorrect suggestions, which are known as hallucinations, can still lead to new ideas that are worth testing. 'Supervised LLMs offer a scalable, imaginative layer of scientific exploration, and can help us as human scientists explore new paths that we hadn't thought of before,' said Professor Ross King from Cambridge's Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, who led the research. 'This is not automation replacing scientists, but a new kind of collaboration,' added co-author Dr Hector Zenil from King's College London. 'Guided by expert prompts and experimental feedback, the AI functioned like a tireless research partner—rapidly navigating an immense hypothesis space and proposing ideas that would take humans alone far longer to reach. 'This study demonstrates how AI can be woven directly into the iterative loop of scientific discovery, enabling adaptive, data-informed hypothesis generation and validation in real time." June 4 - Crete Professionals Alliance, an accounting platform backed by Thrive Capital, plans to invest over $500 million to acquire U.S.-based accounting firms in the next two years, and equip them with OpenAI-powered artificial intelligence technology to boost efficiency, company executives told Reuters. Crete PA is the latest example of how venture capital firms are going after traditional industries and funding a buying spree to transform local businesses with AI in a roll-up play, from healthcare to property management. Founded in 2023, the company has grown to over $300 million in annual revenue with over 20 accounting businesses, making it one of the fastest-growing accounting firms in the U.S. Crete now has 900 employees across 17 offices, and operations in Asia. The firm has raised a few hundred million from investors such as Thrive, ZBS Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners. It plans to use its cash flow and external capital to fund more roll-ups, through which it acquires majority stakes in local firms and supports them with recruiting and administrative work. Jake Sloane, co-founder of Crete PA and ZBS Partner, has previously built roll-up businesses from veterinary to plumbing. Believing AI tools could help accountants expand their customer base and take on more workloads, he partnered with Thrive to take advantage of the tech investor's expertise and network in May 2024. Since then, Thrive, known for its big bets in Silicon Valley companies such as Stripe, OpenAI and Databricks, has its in-house tech team working with OpenAI to build customized tools and models for the accounting industry, from data mapping and memo writing. Bennie Lewis, President at Assurance Dimensions, one of Crete-owned accounting firms in Tampa, Florida, said that in audit testing, the AI tools saved his team hundreds of hours every month, freeing them up for more client-facing work. Sloane said the roll-up diverges from the traditional private equity approach in allowing accounting practices to maintain a minority equity stake in the local business, ensuring original shareholders remain actively involved. Traditional services like accounting have become a hotbed for venture capital investment, which is typically known for ambitious bets on nascent startups in Silicon Valley. Kareem Zaki, a partner at Thrive, said it takes more than selling the software to create value in a complex industry like accounting, so the fund decided to pursue roll-ups that give it more ownership and control of the businesses. "As full-stack operators of the accounting firm, we can take all the software elements, the operational elements, and be able to flow that through into the end customer experience," Zaki said. Sloane said the goal is not to replace accountants with AI, but to use technology to enhance service quality, while humans build trusted relationships. "I don't believe AI is something that will fundamentally eradicate the need for accountants," Sloane said. The industry has faced challenges such as an accountant shortage. Technology has played a significant role in enhancing productivity in the past, such as software tools like QuickBooks. Thrive Capital is not alone in pursuing roll-ups of services in the hope of AI automation. General Catalyst, another VC firm, is also creating firms that buy companies in professional services, including its accounting firm Accrual. Those investors believe generative AI technology can boost profitability and scalability for service businesses, especially those reliant on knowledge work. While accounting firms have been popular targets for private equity, analysts say it will take time to see if they can deliver the higher returns expected for venture capital investments on the heels of AI automation.
