Meta says it is okay for applicants to use AI during job interview but there is a catch
Meta is testing a new way of conducting coding interviews, where some candidates will be allowed to use AI tools during the process, according to 404 Media. This new approach is still in the trial stage and will only be available to a limited set of applicants for now. The idea behind the move is to make interviews more realistic by allowing candidates to use the same tools they might use once they join the part of this experiment, Meta has also asked its own employees to participate in mock interviews. These test rounds will help the company finalise the format and questions before it's rolled out more widely. An internal post on Meta's message board mentioned, 'Meta is developing a new type of coding interview in which candidates have access to an AI assistant. This is more representative of the developer environment that our future employees will work in.'The company believes that by allowing AI support during interviews, it can assess how well a candidate can work in an environment where AI is part of daily tasks. The format is still under development, and Meta has asked volunteers to help test it and give feedback. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has already made it clear in public statements that he sees AI playing a major role in the company's future. He said earlier this year, 'I think this year, probably in 2025, we are going to have an AI that can effectively be a midlevel engineer.' He also added that over time, much of the code powering Meta's platforms could be written by AI instead of repeated this idea in another interview, where he predicted that 'sometime in the next 12 to 18 months, we'll reach the point where most of the code that's going towards [AI] efforts is written by AI.'While many tech companies encourage their engineers to use AI for everyday work, very few allow candidates to use such tools during interviews. Some companies, like Anthropic (which makes the Claude AI chatbot) even have strict rules banning AI usage in the hiring process. There are also tools online that help candidates secretly use AI during coding rounds, sparking concern in the developers feel that relying too much on AI could lead to a new kind of software engineer, someone who depends more on prompting AI than writing or understanding code from scratch. This has raised questions about how well such candidates can handle real-world problems, especially when AI-generated code needs fixing.A Meta spokesperson told 404 Media, 'We are obviously focused on using AI to help engineers with their day-to-day work, so it should be no surprise that we are testing how to provide these tools to applicants during interviews.'For now, the AI-supported interviews are being tested internally, and it's not clear when or if Meta will expand this to all job applicants.
