Ducks' Zegras Suspended Three Games for Late Hit
The reasoning for supplemental discipline from NHL Player Safety is that the hit was interference, it was late, it caused an injury and there was significant head contact—combined with the force of the hit—on the play.
This is Zegras' first suspension. He will miss Tuesday's road game against the Buffalo Sabres along with Thursday and Saturday's home games against the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks.
In his absence, the Ducks may recall one of their top scorers from the AHL in Sam Colangelo, who has had several NHL stints this season. Colangelo has 35 points in 37 AHL games this season and leads the San Diego Gulls in goals with 19. He was also named to the AHL All-Star Game.
Losing Zegras for three games while pushing for a playoff spot is a big blow. His creativity with the puck is an element that the team misses when he isn't in the lineup, so how they fare in and adapt to his absence will be key.

Columbus Blue Jackets sign restricted free agent Mikael Pyyhtia to one-year contract
One of the Blue Jackets' last two unsigned free agents has agreed to terms on a new contract. Mikael Pyyhtia, a 23-year old depth forward who has played parts of the past three seasons in Columbus, will continue his time with the Blue Jackets after signing a one-year, two-way NHL/AHL contract Aug. 13 worth $775,000 at the NHL level, $100,000 with the AHL's Cleveland Monsters and guarantees a $140,000 minimum salary. Nicknamed "Tuna" by teammates who struggle with the Finnish pronunciation of his last name, Pyyhtia contributed four goals, three assists and seven points while posting a -11 plus/minus in 47 games last season in his most extensive NHL action. He totaled 3-13-16 with a +4 for Cleveland in 28 AHL games. Pyyhtia also chipped in an assist during six playoff games for the Monsters. Defenseman Daemon Hunt is now the lone RFA without a new deal. Hunt, 23, has 13 NHL games under his belt but hasn't played for the Blue Jackets since they acquired him as part of the trade that sent David Jiricek to the Minnesota Wild. Red Wings Fantasy Hockey Outlook: Kasper and Gibson Potential League Winners
John Gibson, Marco Kasper among several Detroit Red Wings poised to outperform their early undervalued Fantasy Hockey rankings. The Fantasy Hockey season is underway on several platforms, including Yahoo Sports, which has released its early player rankings ahead of draft season along with projections for the upcoming year. Some players are listed at great value, while others seem overvalued and may be better to avoid based on their current rankings. Fantasy Hockey continues to be one of the most exciting parts of the sport, giving fans the opportunity to build teams with their favorite players, whether from their hometown club or from across the league, all competing for Fantasy success. Some Detroit Red Wings are featured in intriguing spots within the early rankings. Certain projections appear to undervalue their potential, while others hint at expectations of a drop in performance. Here, we dive into some of the most interesting and compelling storylines taking shape in the opening stages of the Fantasy season. Coming Home? NHL Insider Says Red Wings Make Sense For Kyle Connor The Detroit Red Wings were among the more active teams in this summer's NHL free agency period, signing multiple players to short-term contracts and re-signing future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane. Kasper's Added Minutes and Role Make Breakout Possible Detroit's second line heading into next season is expected to be Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane centered by the young Marco Kasper. The 21-year-old Austrian forward enters his sophmore season and excelled during his time with the two veteran wingers as a rookie, posting a solid +4 net rating after playing 192.2 minutes together over 30 games. With a full season in the top six and more time with the line and on the second power play unit, he should blow past his 37 total points from last season and could also outperform his 50 point total projected by Yahoo for this season. His minutes per game last season finished at 15:27 and this should change as he will be in a more secure role in the top six with the potential of even hoping up to the team's first line at left wing. If they can't find a suitor for the line of Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond, Kasper will have to be the answer but even without landing that job he should see his minutes jump to around 17-18, typical for a second line centre. This should lead to more chances to land more hits in which he's projected to finish with the second-most on the team after Mortiz Seider and fire off more shots as he's projected to finish with only 151 which is just six more than his total last season at 145 despite his playing time likely seeing a sizeable spike. If you also play in a league that counts face-off wins, his added time will likely see him jump from fourth on the team in wins last season to hopefully second or third. Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest news, game-day coverage, and player features. Gibson Making Case For League-Winning Sleeper The Red Wings brought in Gibson to be the goaltender who can hopefully lead them to the playoffs, but Yahoo doesn't see it that way. He's ranked behind players like Edmonton's Stuart Skinner, even though the Oilers are actively searching for his replacement, Pittsburgh's Tristan Jarry, who was sent down to the AHL last season due to poor performance, and Carolina's Frederik Andersen, who shares the net with Pyotr Kochetkov. Yahoo is significantly undervaluing a goaltender expected to play a major role in his team's push for the postseason. Early projections have Gibson winning just 20 games, allowing 123 goals, and making only 1,139 saves. That save total is lower than what he recorded in seven of his last ten NHL seasons. The only exceptions were during seasons when he was primarily a backup in Anaheim, during the COVID-19-shortened season, and in his rookie year. Realistically, Gibson is likely to start 50 to 55 games this season, with his win total more likely landing in the high 20s or even 30s. His fantasy value is shockingly low considering his expected workload, track record, and the improved team around him. Fantasy managers should take advantage of this overlooked opportunity. First Line Benefits For JVR? It's hard to say what the lineup will look like next season for the Red Wings but early signs have indicated they would like to keep together the second line with Kasper, Kane and DeBrincat. This leaves a hole at the very top of the lineup with Larkin and Raymond not having a competent left winger to round out the line. As of right now, lineup predictions have the veteran James van Riemsdyk occupying the spot which makes sense after he saw top line minutes last season when playing on the Columbus Blue Jackets. He is currently ranked outside the top 500 players as he sits 547th overall in preseason rankings. If the lines turn out to be true, van Riemsdyk could turn into a solid sleeper option as he consistently produces 35-40 points and could produce more on the first line. Angel Reese is sidelined for a 6th consecutive game. Will the Chicago Sky star play again this season?
Angel Reese will miss a sixth consecutive game Wednesday night for the Chicago Sky — and the All-Star forward is still struggling to return to the court after suffering a lower back injury that could put the remainder of her season in jeopardy. Reese has not been cleared for basketball activities. She did not travel for the road game against the Indiana Fever on Saturday at the advice of the team's medical staff and attended Sky practice Monday at Sachs Recreation Center in street clothes. The Sky have not shut Reese down for the season and are operating under the expectation she will be back. Despite her availability being labeled as day to day, however, the forward is not making visible progress toward a return. Reese missed her first game of the season July 16 against the Atlanta Dream with a leg injury. That game was the final before the All-Star break, during which the forward participated fully in the All-Star Game and other activities in Indianapolis. The back injury first emerged on the availability report after Reese played in the team's first game after the break on July 22. Reese missed the next two home games — including the second United Center matchup against the Indiana Fever — but pushed to return for the Sky's July 29 loss to the Washington Mystics. That game marked an important moment for Reese — her first opportunity to play a WNBA game in front of her grandmother, who was in attendance in D.C. Despite her recovery status, Reese made a concerted effort to be available for that game. The forward logged 22 points and 13 rebounds but showed some visible discomfort as she shot less than 40% from the field for the first time in over a month. Reese was fully shut down from activity after that game. She has not been cleared for any activity since then and has stayed home from at least two games. Reese is averaging 14.2 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 44.4% from the field in her second consecutive All-Star season. Despite an evolving role that required her to shoulder more on-ball reps, Reese improved her scoring efficiency and playmaking in her sophomore season. The Sky have won only one of the nine games they have played without Reese this season — last week's 74-68 victory over the Mystics, who have begun a controlled tank to close the year after trading away Brittney Sykes and Aaliyah Edwards. Although the Sky are realistic about their odds of making the playoffs, they also do not benefit from ending the season on a skid. The Minnesota Lynx own the Sky's first-round pick in 2026, which means finishing the season in the lottery does not benefit them — and hands another weapon to the team with the best record in the league. Time is the greatest barrier for Reese. The Sky, who at 8-23 own the second-worst record in the WNBA, have only 12 games — and four weeks — remaining in the season after Wednesday's home matchup against the Sun. And players typically require several days to ramp back up into game shape after multiweek absences, which means Reese might not be able to play immediately once she is medically cleared for contact. Ultimately, Reese's ability to return this season will hinge on her recovery over the next week.
