AI-based facial identification to track sex abusers at railway stations

Representational Image NEW DELHI: The Union govt has informed SC that it plans to set up Artificial Intelligence-based facial recognition systems at seven major railway stations, including Mumbai CST and New Delhi, to curb crimes against women. The number of sexual offenders recorded in the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO) has crossed the 20-lakh mark, it further told the court. Responding to serious concerns raised, through a PIL, by Supreme Court Women Lawyers' Association over the rise in crimes against women, the ministry of home affairs (MHA), in an affidavit, detailed the steps being taken to address the issue and said apart from railway stations, safe city projects have been implemented in eight cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Lucknow - by local police and municipal corporations. The projects focus on improving safety infrastructure by installing CCTV cameras with facial recognition or automatic number plate recognition, alongside smart lighting systems, and use of drones to monitor high-risk areas, the Centre said. A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant is scheduled to hear the PIL on Monday. The ministry said: "The Integrated Emergency Response Management System (IERMS) has been made operational in 499 out of 983 major railway stations, ensuring 24X7 security for women passengers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Launch at Godrej Sector 12 | Luxurious 3 BHK + S & 4 BHK Homes @₹2.90 Cr* Godrej Majesty Learn More Undo Additionally, the Konkan Railway Network has benefited from the installation of 740 CCTV cameras across 67 stations, with plans to expand further using Al-based facial recognition systems at seven major stations, including Mumbai CST and New Delhi". The MHA said NDSO data includes names, addresses, photographs and fingerprint details of individuals involved in sexual offences like rape, gangrape, eve teasing, stalking, and child abuse. As of date, it has 20.28 lakh entries available for use by all police stations and law-enforcement agencies in the country through the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS). However, the women lawyers' association, represented by senior advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, said additional measures are required as National Crime Records Bureau statistics show a spike in crimes against women from 58.8 per lakh in 2018 to 66.4 per lakh in 2022. In a rejoinder to the Centre's affidavit, Pavani said, "In 2022, there were 23.66 lakh cases of crime against women pending trial, of which only 1.5 lakh were decided in 2022 and only 38,136 ended in conviction". The association said, "Introduction of technology-based projects like Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), Crime Multi Agency Centre (Cr-MAC), NDSO, Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offenders (ITSSO), Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to improve and make the criminal justice system efficient are not making a big difference".

Activist raises concerns over boundary demarcation in Macaque Sanctuary

Shivamogga: An environmental activist from Shivamogga has raised concerns about boundary demarcation within the Lion-Tailed Macaque Sanctuary in Sharavathi Valley, spanning across Hosanagar and Sagar taluks. Girish Achar claims forest officials assisted encroachers through illogical boundary fixing. Achar submitted a letter to various authorities, including the central empowered committee and the Union ministry of environment and forest, urging protection of the Sharavathi Valley, which received sanctuary status in 2019. He explained that the Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary was redesignated as Lion-Tailed Macaque Sanctuary in 2019, incorporating Jog, Channakonda, and Ambargudda state forests. He said some influential individuals damaged local biodiversity and occupied vast forest areas, subsequently applying for Bagair Hukum sanctions. From Jan 27 to March 3, the Shivamogga foresters marked the boundary of the 1974 notified sanctuary, neglecting the 2019 notification at the time of declaring the Macaque Sanctuary, and were found to be self-interested in helping the encroachers, he said. This resulted in Western Ghats forest areas increasingly falling into encroachers' possession. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo These individuals targeted sloped areas without flowing streams, destroying dense forest along stream banks, severely impacting local wildlife populations. Achar has called for urgent intervention from relevant authorities, requesting legal action against encroachers, cancellation of unauthorised sanctions, prosecution of officials enabling encroachment, and implementation of strict measures to safeguard the sanctuary.

Ex-Union min Meenakshi Lekhi falls off horse during Mansarovar yatra in Tibet, injured

Pithoragarh/Dehradun: Former BJP MP and ex-Union minister of state for external affairs, Meenakshi Lekhi , sustained injuries after she fell from a horse during the Kailash Mansarovar yatra near Derapuk in Tibet region, Pithoragarh district magistrate Vinod Goswami told TOI. "She has cut short her journey and reached Gunji in Pithoragarh on Sunday," the DM added. "The ex-minister is suspected to have suffered injuries on her back and multiple rib fractures," another official, privy to details, said. A senior official in Dehradun confirmed that the incident occurred on July 18 in Derapuk in Tibet while she was undertaking a 'parikrama' of the sacred mountain. She was brought to Taklakot (Purang town) on the yatra route the next day, where doctors after administering initial treatment, "deemed her unfit to continue the journey". Later that day, the liaison officer of the second batch informed the commandant of the 7th Battalion of Indo-Tibetan Border Police ( ITBP ) via phone. ITBP personnel reached Lipulekh Pass around 8:30 am on Sunday, where they formally received Lekhi from officials on the other side and "provided first aid on-site". She was then transported by road to Nabhidhang in Pithoragarh, where she took rest and also spoke to CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, the senior official said. He added: "She was subsequently shifted to the Gunji ITBP camp, where a medical team conducted a detailed examination for further treatment. Due to adverse weather conditions, air evacuation could not be carried out on Sunday, and Lekhi is currently at a guest house in Gunji. She will be airlifted to Delhi once the weather permits." Lekhi was part of the second batch of pilgrims who started their journey from Delhi on July 8 and crossed Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand to reach Tibet region on July 14.
