British Open Round 1 leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler makes late run to get in contention

Yahoo17-07-2025
The final major of the golf season is underway. Is it too soon? That's the question Jay Busbee asked earlier this week, but regardless, it's here in the form of the 153rd British Open.
This year's host is Royal Portrush, the only course in all of Ireland to ever host The Open. That instantly made Rory McIlroy the overwhelming favorite for fans outside the ropes. The last time Portrush hosted the event, in 2019, McIlroy famously hit his drive on the very first hole out of bounds, leading to a quadruple bogey eight and, eventually, an early exit from the tournament before the weekend began.
Fellow countryman Shane Lowry went on to win the tournament, so Ireland did get to celebrate.
Now McIlroy is back, as the second favorite behind only world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. And he bogeyed the first hole this time around, so he's already off to a better start.
Scheffler started in the early wave and, despite a few early hiccups, has put himself smack in contention thanks to two birdies in his final three holes. A 3-under 68 has him just one shot back of the clubhouse co-leaders Matt Fitzpatrick, Haotong Li and Jacob Skov Olesen.
We've made our picks to win, which you can find here. You can watch the tournament on USA Network, where coverage goes from 4 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ET.

Huw Jones returns to Lions XV for second Australia Test after Garry Ringrose withdraws with concussion

Garry Ringrose has withdrawn from the British and Irish Lions team to face Australia after displaying concussion symptoms, head coach Andy Farrell has confirmed. He had been set to start at centre alongside Ireland teammate Bundee Aki, but was ruled out after self-reporting concussion symptoms in training on Thursday. Ringrose had missed the first Test with similar symptoms but returned to play 64 minutes against Pasifika. He has suffered a setback in his recovery, though, forcing Farrell into a last-minute rotation, with Huw Jones reintroduced to the XV. Farrell said: "Garry was actually selected and unfortunately, after training, he's had to pull out. "It's head-related again. It was literally as I was walking off the field. He came to me, and once that's mentioned, that's that. "There was no incident. He was feeling good well in advance of Tuesday. He was fit and ready to play. "There was no incident through the game on Tuesday at all, nothing yesterday (Wednesday) and nothing this morning, but with these type of things players are getting very good at telling the truth of how they feel, so it was a no-brainer to make the change straight away. "It's very easy to keep it to yourself and lie and not be honest and open. It was very big of him and the right thing to do, 100 per cent. For the team as well, not just for Garry. "It's unfortunate for Garry but we've always said it's about the squad, and nothing but about the squad." Owen Farrell drops to the bench after captaining the side against Pasifika, while Marcus Smith misses out entirely, replaced by fit-again Blair Kinghorn. Aki's inclusion is one of three changes to the XV from the first test. Ellis Genge started in Brisbane but will serve as a replacement in Melbourne. Also dropped are Joe McCarthy and Sione Tuipulotu. Joe Schmidt has also rotated his Wallabies outfit, with Will Skelton, Rob Valetini, and David Porecki all returning. "The squad has recovered well after a very physical first Test and the week's preparation here in Melbourne has allowed us a bit more time together," he said. Lineups for British and Irish Lions vs Australia British & Irish Lions: Keenan, Freeman, Jones, Aki, Lowe, Russell, Gibson-Park; Porter, Sheehan, Furlong, Itoje, Chessum, Beirne, Curry, Conan Replacements: Kelleher, Genge, Stuart, Ryan, Morgan, Mitchell, Farrell, Kinghorn Australia: Wright, Jorgensen, Suaalii, Ikitau, Potter, Lynagh, Gordon; Slipper, Porecki, Alaalatoa, Frost, Skelton, Valetini, McReight, Wilson Replacements: Pollard, Bell, Robertson, Williams, Gleeson, Tizzano, McDermott, Donaldson

How to watch Tottenham vs Wycombe: TV channel and live stream for pre-season friendly today

Tottenham take on Wycombe this morning in an additional pre-season friendly. Life under new head coach Thomas Frank got off to the perfect start seven days ago as Spurs ran out 2-0 winners over Reading thanks to quick-fire second half goals from Will Lankshear and Luka Vuskovic. A further test against League One opposition awaits today as the north London outfit welcome host Wycombe in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Hotspur Way training ground. It is the first of two fixtures for Spurs today as they will also face Luton at Kenilworth Road as Frank has explained the reason behind pulling double duty is to give players as many minutes as possible heading into the new season. "We wanted an extra game in our schedule to give as many players as many match minutes as possible, in order to put them in the best position, physically," he said. "We will play two even, strong teams and they will play between 60 and 75 minutes, maybe more. By the end of Saturday, 22 players will have played a lot of match minutes and they will be in a very good place before we go on tour." This will be the first meeting between the two sides since the FA Cup fourth round clash in January 2021 when Spurs ran out 4-1 winners with Tanguy Ndombele netting a late brace. Below is everything you need to know about where to watch the first of Tottenham's double-header today...
