Pay rise announced for more than 60,000 health and hospital workers in NSW

A pay rise is coming for NSW workers in healthcare and hospital roles.
The cash boost of at least $10,000 over four years was brokered by the Health Services Union NSW (HSU NSW), and will be put to members on Monday, with the unanimous backing of HSU NSW's Branch Committee of Management.
While the agreement covers allied health professionals, it also covers wards persons, cleaners, linen workers, administration staff, and pharmacy assistants working across major city hospitals, rural health services and community health centres.
A hospital assistant on $52,000 would get a $10,000 increase, landing on a $62,000 salary by 2027.
A wards person's salary will increase by $10,400, and a security officer's salary will increase by $10,500.
'That's real money that makes a real difference to working families,' union secretary Gerard Hayes said.
The full pay rise will be staggered annually over the four years to June 2027.
'From the audiologists who help restore hearing, to the cleaners who maintain infection control, to the patient transport staff who provide dignity and care — every single one of our members deserves recognition,' Hayes said.
Workers will get a four per cent pay rise in the first year of the two-year deal, and a second four per cent pay rise the year after, with a 0.5 per cent superannuation increase, HSU NSW said.
It exceeds the government's three per cent wage policy.
The deal comes just days after a pay rise request from The NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association was met with a 3.5 per cent pay rise offer from the NSW Government.
It would be back-paid to July 1, and changes to working conditions would embed the right to two consecutive days off, no night shifts before annual leave unless requested, and no changes on published rosters without consultation.
Night shift workers would also see their loading increase to 20 per cent under the agreement.
In addition, the NSW Minns Government acknowledged concerns about a gendered undervaluation of work, leading to gender inequality in the workplace.
It legislated improved gender equity objectives under the Industrial Relations Act in May, which the Industrial Relations Commission will be required to consider.

NSW Premier Chris Minns has been confronted live on-air by a patient who languished for 16 hours waiting for a bed at a western Sydney hospital. Jane was ordered to attend Concord Hospital by her GP about midday on Monday, but only received a bed in the emergency short-stay on Tuesday morning. Once in the ward, Jane said she was 'flabbergasted' to find two of the four beds were empty, with a nurse telling her they 'just don't have the staff to cover the beds'. 'So, all this time there's been empty beds, but they just don't have enough staff to monitor them,' Jane told 2GB's Ben Fordham on Tuesday. In the studio for the call, Mr Minns apologised to Jane for 'what would have been a very difficult night perched on those chairs in the ED'. 'I'm glad you've got a bed, but I don't want to be too cute about it,' he said. 'The reason everybody's sprung into action is because it's on the radio this morning. 'There's going to be a lot of people in New South Wales hospitals that don't have access to radio programs.' The Premier said the state government was trying to recruit and retain staff for emergency departments, and that there had been 'slow but steady improvement'. He said the number of patients in life-threatening states being seen on time had risen from 50 to 64 per cent because of the lifting of the wages cap. Mr Minns admitted the result was 'not where we need to be' and that with 6000-8000 people attending the ED every day, at points it 'gets completely overwhelmed'. 'It's really difficult,' he said, 'Now, I'm not suggesting that we are there, or it's been solved, or the solution has been found. 'There's going to be periods and times when people like Jane, who expect and not demand, but want the kind of help that they pay their taxes for are not going to receive. 'The reason I'm reluctant to sort of say, 'look, help you around the corner, Ben'... is that it's steady progress. 'It's going to take time to recruit people for the health system, get them into emergency departments and help people when they're in a really critical situation'. Jane was now waiting to see a surgical team. She told 2GB since appearing on-air, she had ben contacted by Health Minister Ryan Park and the executive director of Concord Hospital. It comes as the state government faces continued pressure of hospital conditions, particularly in western Sydney. Last month, a woman was forced to sleep in her car and an elderly man lied down under seats at Blacktown Hospital. Liverpool and Blacktown hospitals have consistently ranked 'significantly lower' than average in a survey of patient satisfaction, according to recent findings.

Newly elected One Nation senator Warwick Stacey has resigned from the Senate, citing 'personal health issues'. The former British army officer was elected in May, taking out the sixth and last NSW senate spot. Senator Stacey's exit will create a casual vacancy, allowing One Nation to fill the seat with another member. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson announced his departure on Tuesday morning and called Senator Stacey a man of 'principle and a great Australian'. She said she would announce the party's replacement in the coming weeks. 'It is with profound regret that we farewell him from the Senate so soon after he was elected,' she said. 'I was delighted when it was announced Senator Stacey had won a seat representing NSW. I knew he would bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise to our team along with the strong conservative values that made Australia great.' Senator Stacey, who has yet to give him first speech on the Senate floor, said his 'personal health issues' meant he would not be able to 'fully dedicate myself to the role'. He also thanked Senator Hanson for 'the opportunity to serve and represent my state in Canberra,' and said the campaign was 'memorable' that bought the party's Senate representation to four. 'I don't think a person elected to Parliament should be anything less than completely dedicated to a role entrusted to them by voters, so I'm resigning to make way for someone who can do that on behalf of the people of NSW.' Prior to the election, Senator Stacey spoke out against immigration, and said it was fuelling inflation and the housing crisis. He also stood along with Senator Hanson and his fellow One Nation senators when the members collectively turned their back during an acknowledgement of country, in a move that was criticised by Indigenous Affairs Minister Malarndirri McCarthy.

NSW man becomes world's longest surviving quadruple bypass patient

The fact that Ray Hildridge, 78, is still enjoying life in his home on the NSW Central Coast is so "remarkable" it has made him a world record holder. Mr Hildridge, from Hamlyn Terrace, is the longest-surviving quadruple bypass surgery patient in the world. Renowned heart surgeon Victor Chang performed Mr Hildridge's procedure at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital in 1982. "I had high cholesterol and four blocked arteries," Mr Hildridge said. "The arteries needed to be replaced and heart bypass surgery grafts were new to Australia at that time, only St Vincent's Hospital were doing it." In July, Mr Hildridge passed the record previously set by American Tom Dieffenbach, who lived for 42 years and 284 days after his quadruple bypass surgery. He said even his specialists had been amazed by his survival. Mr Hildridge is now expected to be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records. Although Mr Hildridge was well enough to attend his niece's wedding just two weeks after his surgery, the journey back to good health has not been easy. The keen soccer referee and coach felt so good in the first few months after the operation, he admitted he reverted back to his old ways. "Smoking didn't do me any good but … would you believe about three months after my initial bypass I took smoking up again," Mr Hildridge said. "I had done things wrong, but I still had to work it out myself." Mr Hildridge said Dr Chang advised him to eat "rabbit food" and his wife Marilyn Hildridge did her best to encourage him to eat a healthy diet. "I used to pack Ray a salad and I often wondered what happened to that salad," Mrs Hildridge said. "I think it might have gone in the garbage, I wasn't a salad person then," Mr Hildridge confessed. Mrs Hildridge said it was a difficult time. "It's been a long road. I've never stopped to think about it because it just goes on and we're very lucky, very fortunate." In the years that followed, Mr Hildridge eventually quit smoking for good. He has had multiple follow-up surgeries to replace some of the bypass grafts, but one of the original grafts performed by Dr Chang remains. Dr Chang, a pioneer of modern heart transplant surgery, was murdered in Mosman in 1991. His legacy is something Mr Hildridge's current cardiologist Brendan Gunalingam keeps in mind. He said Mr Hildridge remained the youngest patient to have undergone a quadruple bypass at St Vincent's Hospital. "When he first had his bypass he was in his 30s and for someone who has had progressive, aggressive coronary disease, it's remarkable [that he is still alive]," Dr Gunalingam said. He said Mr Hildridge's positive attitude had played a part in his longevity. "It's a huge factor, you've got to have the mindset," he said. Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute director Jason Kovacic said medical advances since Mr Hildridge's initial surgery in 1982 meant it was unlikely a 34-year-old patient would undergo quadruple bypass surgery anymore. "These days someone might get a stent or start with very powerful medical therapies rather than going to bypass surgery at such a young age." Professor Kovacic also described Mr Hildridge's story as remarkable. "Someone having bypass surgery these days would be expected to get many, many years out of their bypass grafts, [but] that wasn't the case back in the 80s because we just didn't have all of the other things that we can offer," he said. "He's to be roundly congratulated on an amazing, amazing run. He's done so well to look after himself so well."
