Black box found at site of India plane crash that killed 265
The black box of the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft that crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport was recovered, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said. Its analysis will provide vital clues about what lead to the disaster.
In a post on X, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said that the recovery 'marks an important step forward in the investigation'.
The Ahmedabad–London Air India flight, carrying 242 people, crashed into the BJ Medical College complex just minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. 265 people lost their lives in the incident, making this one of India's biggest aviation disasters. The bodies of six victims were handed over to their families after identification today. In case of the other bodies, which are partially or fully charred, it will take around 72 hours to complete the exercise of matching their DNA samples, police said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits plane crash site
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site of the deadly plane crash and met the injured at the civil hospital in Ahmedabad. He arrived at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport in the morning and drove straight to the plane crash site. He spent around 20 minutes inspecting the site. Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi accompanied the prime minister.
He spoke to Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, the lone plane survivor of the tragedy, at the city civil hospital, and also met other persons injured in the accident. He visited the C7 ward of the hospital, where 25 injured people are undergoing treatment, and interacted with the doctors. He met state and civil aviation officers and was briefed on the tragedy.
The prime minister also met the former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was onboard the flight.
India abstains on Gaza ceasefire resolution in UNGA, just six months after voting for a similar resolution
India abstained from a UNGA resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza for the fourth time in three years. India had voted in favour of a UNGA resolution for ceasefire in December 2024, making this a significant departure from India's position just six months ago.
According to a leaked demarch reported by U.S. media, the Trump administration has 'warned' partner countries not to join the conference or to make pledges for the recognition of Palestine. India recognised Palestine in 1988, and is among 147 of 193 UNGA countries that have already recognised the Palestinian state.
The resolution entitled 'Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations'was introduced by Spain at the UNGA on Thursday evening.
149 of 180 countries voted for the resolution . The United States, Israel and ten other countries voted against the resolution. India was one of 19 abstentions on the vote. India was the only country in South Asia, BRICS or the SCO groupings to abstain.
Explaining the vote, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Paravathaneni Harish said that India was 'deeply concerned' about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but that it decided to abstain 'in continuation' of previous votes in December 2022 criticising Israel for Human Rights violations and in December 2024 that referred the Israeli bombardment of Gaza to the International Court of Justice. India had also abstained in a vote calling for a ceasefire in October 2023 and two other resolutions pertaining to human rights investigations in 2023-2024.
Iran says Israel attack 'declaration of war', Trump asks Iran to take the deal
After Israel launched an array of strikes against dozens of Iranian targets on Friday, Iran said that Israel's actions are a declaration of war.
Israel hit nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories in Iran and targeted military commanders during the start of an operation to prevent Tehran from building a nuclear weapon.
Israel launched an attack on Iran even as the US and Iran were preparing to hold a sixth round of talks on Sunday on Tehran's uranium enrichment programme. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that the strikes would 'continue as many days as it takes', while the military said intelligence showed Iran was approaching the 'point of no return' on its nuclear programme.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel it faced a 'bitter and painful' fate over the attacks, and President Masoud Pezeshkian said 'Iran will make the enemy regret its foolish act'. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the attack as a 'declaration of war'.
Trump urged Iran to 'make a deal', warning that there will be more 'death and destruction' after Israel launched deadly strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. He had given Tehran a 60-day ultimatum, which expired on Thursday, to make a deal. He encouraged Tehran to take advantage of a 'second chance.'

New Delhi: Former Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani, was among the 242 people on board the doomed Air India 787-8 Dreamliner, which crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. Only one survived, and 241 people died, including the former Chief Minister. But, flying to London on June 12 to meet his wife and daughter was not Mr Rupani's first choice. The former chief minister first booked his ticket for May 19 on flight AI171 and intended to fly back to India on June 25. With a change in plans, Mr Rupani cancelled his ticket for May 19 and decided to fly on June 5. The former Chief Minister cancelled his second ticket too and booked seat number 2D on flight AI 171 for June 12, which crashed in less than a minute after taking off. CCTV footage from the runway showed the aircraft was airborne for only 32 seconds before crashing into the hostel building of BJ Medical College, which is close to the airport. A huge fireball followed the crash, damaging the hostel building. Several casualties were reported at the medical college, too. '1206' And Mr Rupani's Personal Connect The number '1206' stood for good fortune for Mr Rupani, who used it on his car, scooter and official number plate of his vehicle as Chief Minister. He considered it lucky for him until it wasn't. The former Chief Minister died on June 12 (12/06) in the crash. 12/06, according to friends, family, and party colleagues, was a personal emblem for Mr Rupani. Vijay Rupani's Political Life Mr Rupani served as Gujarat's 16th Chief Minister from August 2016 to September 2021. Born in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma, in 1956, his family migrated to Rajkot in the 1960s following political instability in Southeast Asia. He began his political career as a student activist and became a municipal corporator in Rajkot in 1987. Over the next three decades, he held a range of administrative and legislative roles, including as minister for transport, water supply, and labour. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012. In 2014, he was appointed as a minister in the Gujarat government, where he served till 2016, followed by taking over as the Chief Minister in the same year, a position he held till 2021 before resigning ahead of the assembly elections as part of the BJP's leadership reset. Mr Rupani remained active in organisational affairs. He held a senior advisory role within the party's Gujarat unit and was frequently consulted on matters related to state policy and elections.

According to the MEA, PM Modi will begin his trip in Cyprus on June 15-16, then travel to Kananaskis, Canada, on June 16-17 to participate in the G-7 Summit, before concluding with an official visit to Croatia on June 18. "At the invitation of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus June 15-16. This will be the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades. While in Nicosia, the Prime Minister will hold talks with President Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol," the MEA said.
