South Africa's title defence begins under different conditions, but the ambition remains the same: to return home with the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) trophy.
Banyana Banyana will once again be tested by the best on the continent, and with talisman Thembi Kgatlana not part of the squad, Desiree Ellis will be banking on a trusted core to carry the load.
It's a squad built on continuity — with 17 players returning from the 2022 triumph — but the pressure is heavier, and the margins thinner. Five players, in particular, will be central to whether Banyana can go all the way. Refiloe Jane – Captain, controller & conductor
One of three co-captains named by Ellis, Jane remains the metronome in midfield. Her intelligence and positional awareness make her more than just a playmaker — she's a tactical compass.
After missing last year's World Cup through injury, the 31-year-old returns with a point to prove and a title to defend.
When Banyana need to settle, build or recover, Jane is the one they'll look to. Her leadership and ability to read the game will be vital in navigating the group stages and beyond.
Kaylin Swart – The safe hands in goal

While both Swart and Andile Dlamini were named in the final squad, it's the JVW goalkeeper who takes over as first-choice between the sticks this time around.
Swart has quietly worked her way into the No.1 jersey and now carries the weight of expectation heading into Morocco.
She'll be tasked with marshalling the defence and maintaining calm in high-pressure moments.
Her shot-stopping, command in the air, and distribution have improved significantly — and in a tournament where one mistake can end a campaign, Swart's form could prove decisive.
Linda Motlhalo – The creative key

Motlhalo is the one who adds rhythm and flair to Banyana's attack. Dubbed the 'Randfontein Ronaldinho', her ability to operate between the lines and deliver that final pass makes her irreplaceable.
She was a standout in Morocco over two years ago, and with Kgatlana absent, there'll be even more on her shoulders this time around.
If South Africa are going to create and convert chances, Motlhalo will almost certainly be involved. Whether from open play or set-pieces, she brings the x-factor.
Hildah Magaia – The Main Goal Threat

She scored the goals that sealed South Africa's first-ever WAFCON crown. Now, with Kgatlana unavailable, Magaia becomes the team's central goal threat.
The forward, who plies her trade in Mexico with Club Tijuana, has shown an ability to rise in big moments — and Ellis will need her to do it again.
Magaia thrives on movement, precision, and timing. If she finds early rhythm, she could end the tournament among the top scorers.

Can Banyana Banyana defend their Wafcon title?

The Banyana Banyana squad is set to defend their Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title, which they won in Morocco in 2022. The 2025 Wafcon takes place from July 5 to 26. Banyana will play their opening game against Ghana on Monday, then meet Tanzania next Friday and go against Mali in the last fixture of the group stages on July 14. However, the team faced some setbacks in their preparations, with players embarking on a two-day strike due to unpaid match fees last weekend and Sasol pulling out as a sponsor. They go into this tournament with one of their key players, Thembi Kgatlana, not available due to personal reasons. The team are also adjusting to the intense heat in Morocco, but midfielder Regina Mogolola remains confident they will succeed. 'We are feeling good and we are prepared,' she said. 'We know what it will take to defend our title and we will have to work as a team, play for one another, support each other, fight for one another. So, teamwork will win the day, unlike in tennis where you are on your own.'

Springboks Siya Kolisi's saga worse than expected!

Springboks fans will be waiting anxiously regarding the injury news of captain Siya Kolisi, who will miss Saturday's clash against Italy after sustaining an Achilles injury. The double World Cup winner missed the Barbarian's game at the end of June but was expected to make a return for this weekend; however, the injury is reportedly worse than expected. 'He had a stiff neck, which has cleared up, but now he's got a bit of Achilles stiffness. It's not serious – the scans are clear – but we're just being careful. No player will play more than eight or nine matches this year, so we'd rather be safe,' said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus. It's yet to be confirmed whether Kolisi will feature this month, but it wouldn't be over presumptions to assume that he will be rested in order to be fit and ready for the highly-anticipated Rugby Championship. After all, the Springbok coach is adamant that no player will feature more than nine teams in 2025. 15 Damian Willemse, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Jesse Kriel (c), 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Morne van den Berg, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Ox Nche. Bench: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Jan-Hendrik Wessels, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 RG Snyman, 20 Franco Mostert, 21 Kwagga Smith, 22 Faf de Klerk, 23 Willie le Roux. Rassie Erasmus is inundated with world-class talent, leaving several key players, deserving of the international stage, out of the squad, including Stormers star Evan Roos. 'At this stage he's [Roos] just competing with the best. We all have different opinions on who plays well and who doesn't. In our opinion, he wasn't playing as well as the other guys and that's normally the reason we don't select guys,' Erasmus admitted. 'At this stage, Juarno [Augustus; failed to pass an exit medical at Northhampton Saints ahead of his move to Ulster] and Cameron [Hanekom] are out. Evan was not playing as well as the other guys. That's not to say he isn't Springbok level, it's just that Kwagga Smith, Cameron, Juarno, and Siya [Kolisi] can all play eight.' 'A guy can be good enough, but there are just two or three guys who we think fit better into what we are trying to do as a Springbok team. Maybe he just doesn't fit that plan or the other guys are a bit more settled,' the Springbok coach concluded. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Springboks injury list goes from bad to worse

While Springboks boast an array of talent, they will be missing several long-serving player who will surely be missed. 'He [Kolisi] had a stiff neck, which has cleared up, but now he's got a bit of Achilles stiffness. It's not serious – the scans are clear – but we're just being careful. No player will play more than eight or nine matches this year, so we'd rather be safe,' said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus. The latest injury dilemma regarding captain Siya Kolisi, who has been ruled out of Saturday's game against Italy after sustaining an Achilles injury. There is no confirmed timeline for his return, however, head coach Rassie Erasmus has ensured fans that this is a routine check up. Meanwhile, fellow double World Cup winners Frans Malherbe and Trevor Nyakane are likely not to feature in 2025, opening the door for Springboks' next crop of talent, subsequently putting their 2027 World Cup chances in further jeopardy. 'Frans is unlikely to play this season again, Trevor definitely not,' the Springboks coach noted. 'Neethling is not a boy anymore, around 30 [32], which is a lekker age for a tighthead prop. Thomas du Toit is doing well with Bath. He is one of the top players there. Wilco is doing well.' 'We are not going to change our game. We want to retain that forward power. There will be new faces in the front row this year.' 15 Damian Willemse, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Jesse Kriel (c), 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Morne van den Berg, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 Marco van Staden, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Ox Nche.
