One-Handed Backflip: Best Wave Pool Air Ever?

One-Handed Backflip: Best Wave Pool Air Ever?

Yahoo5 days ago
Before most people could buzz from their morning coffee, 18-year-old Hughie Vaughan was bouncing off the walls. Yesterday, the 18-year-old Australian, fresh off winning Stab High Japan and entering the 2025 Swatch Nines at the 11th hour, paddled out for the first session of the day and landed one of the most inverted, off-axis airs ever seen in Waco's famed wave pool. Hughie greased a one-handed stalefish backflip — with no straps or winch pull — right in front of slack-jawed filmers.
When the clip circulated on social media, plenty of heavyweights chimed in on Hughie's accomplishment. From Mick Fanning to Julian Wilson to Mateus Herdy to Paul Fisher, they were all stunned. "There's a new standard," Julian Wilson said. "That was unbelievable."
A few hours later, while eating banana cream pie before his last session of the day, the grom got another surprise as he scrolled through his phone. 'No way,' Hughie exclaimed. 'Tony Hawk just followed me.'
The living skate legend dubbed Hughie's move 'The Stale Fish Flipper' and instantly gave the young surfer major kudos. This is the kind of cross-pollination Swatch Nines strives for. It's a surf, skate and BMX playground where ideas are shared, attempted and lauded. The unexpected is celebrated, and Hughie's rotation is already being hailed as arguably the best air ever done in a wave pool. Certainly, Jacob Szekely, Matt Meola and Mikey Wright could add their names to the hat, but a one-handed backflip without straps or a winch? That has to take the cake.
'(Hughie) didn't even know what he did today,' Chippa Wilson said. 'He didn't know he just did the best air ever done in a wave pool.'
Due to the format of the event, things like Hughie's wave can go down at any moment. In removing the constraints of competition like heats and scores, organizers created a caldron of creativity. Head to the bathroom and you're liable to miss an air. Grab a sandwich and you won't see the boardslide. But you'll hear the cheers. You can watch for a while, see nothing land, but then the remarkable happens when you glance away.
'It's wild—there's nothing else like it,' said BMX star Kevin Peraza, fresh off his recent X Games bronze medal in Tokyo. 'You've got creativity, and a bunch of different athletes feeding off each other—it's non-stop.'
Hughie's air has been the most impactful move from Swatch Nines Surf thus far, but plenty of highlights have gone down over the last two days: A 200-ton crane hoisting an illuminated 8-foot aluminum ring, surfers flying through (and crashing into) said ring, boardslides on floating rails, winch-whipped full rotations and a barrage of technical airs. In the last light day two, Robbie "Rasta Rob" McCormick stomped a huge backside 540 off the winch on the left, and a few minutes later, Jacob Szekely landed a lofty tail-high 360 (sans winch) with a burned finger he sustained while holding a flare on an earlier attempt. Gotta pay to play, they say.
One of the biggest changes between last year's inaugural event and this year's edition is the enormous floating skate ramp and rails suspended by the crane. Surfers have three rails to choose from: a straight rail, a kink rail and an arched wallriding feature.
And after just a few sessions, things are already clicking. Mason Ho, Noah Beschen and Zeke had several clean attempts on the left. Cam Richards, battling bruised knees and bloody shins, has also been a standout. He's glided across the kink rail numerous times and completed a clean fakie boardslide over the wallride, a move so sweet that Nines founder Nico Zacek ran the length of the pool to embrace him.
If nothing else, the Nines challenge surfers. It makes them put into practice things that normally only exist in a deep, dark corner of their brains. Even for creatives and technical maestros like Mason and Chippa, who have seen and done much in their careers, Waco offers something different.
'I've loved trying wallrides or any sort of boardslides in surfing,' Mason said. 'I've loved it just because I'm a little crazy and there's rocks or something in the way. It's so fun to tear a wave apart, but now it's like, I'm in the water, then out of the water. It's all about the combo.
'Last year, they had the rail and the hamster ball, and it was one of the funnest events I've been a part of," he continued. "This year is even more special and it feels like just the beginning. Last year, we used this tractor for the rail. And it was at the very end of the wave. Now, we've asked them to move it to the middle and gone way bigger with the crane. They've gone to the next level and it's like a dream come true.'
'I've never done pool rails, but I did skate a lot when I was a kid,' Chippa said. 'And this was the closest feeling to hitting your first rail as a kid. It's crazy. A front boardslide feels so sick. So when I first hit this setup, I was so fired up. I almost stuck it and I just needed to go again.'
Call it novel, experimental, random or radical. Stuff is happening at Swatch Nines.

How Wayne Bennett helped Kevin Walters land Kangaroos job without even interviewing for it

New Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has revealed he didn't actually interview for the job specifically, but a glowing reference from Wayne Bennett may have helped him. Walters has been appointed to lead the Kangaroos at the end-of-year Ashes series in England, where Australia will play three Tests against the Old Enemy. Walters is said to be on a three-game deal, with the Australian Rugby League Commission set to make a longer-term call after the Ashes. Walters landed the coveted role after Brad Fittler withdrew his interest, and the ARL Commission upheld it's rule that an NRL club coach can't lead the Kangaroos. That meant Bennett was effectively banned from the Kangaroos job because he's contracted to South Sydney until the end of 2027. Speaking on SEN radio on Friday morning, former Maroons and Broncos coach Walters revealed he never actually had to interview for the Kangaroos job per se. Walters was previously interviewed by the ARL Commission to potentially land the Perth Bears job, which instead went to Mal Meninga. That meant Meninga had to relinquish his role as Kangaroos coach, opening the door for Walters. Kevin Walters didn't interview for Kangaroos job Rather than re-interviewing Walters for the Kangaroos job, the Commission had apparently heard enough when he applied for the Perth gig. "As it happened, I didn't interview for the Australia job, I interviewed for the Bears job which was also done by the ARLC," he told Corey Parker and Ian Healy on SEN Queensland. "They obviously knew a lot about me from that process. When Mal got the Bears job they started looking around for candidates. I saw my name thrown around a few times but I hadn't spoken to the NRL about it. "The I got a phone call and things progressed from there. I found out a few days ago I had got the job so I was really thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to coach the great Kangaroos." RELATED: Jahrome Hughes forced to miss funeral for Storm teammate's father Unused camera angle that shows NRL world fooled by optical illusion Walters lifted the lid on the interview process, revealing: "It was a Zoom meeting. Sometimes they're face to face. They asked some questions and my thoughts on setting up a new franchise and what kind of players I would try and entice. You don't have to look far, if you google my name or your name a lot of information comes up. It's not hard to find out information, you've just got to ask the right questions." Wayne Bennett's glowing reference for Kevin Walters Walters revealed how Bennett had written him a reference when he was moved on as Broncos coach at the end of 2024. In the end it actually worked against Bennett, who was said to be keen to lead the Kangaroos in the Ashes. "When I was moved on from the Broncos, Wayne Bennett wrote me a reference for future employment," Walters said. "When I read it I thought 'well this is bloody good, why aren't you keeping me on the books'." The revelation that he was never interviewed about the Kangaroos job might raise some eyebrows around the NRL world. One would think the questions and criteria would be completely different when trying to find the Bears coach as opposed to the Kangaroos boss. As Walters mentioned, the questions for the Bears coach would focus on how they'd help set up a completely new franchise, whereas the Kangaroos gig is vastly different. Speaking earlier this week, journalist Andrew Webster said it wasn't exactly a show of confidence in Walters that he's only been appointed for three games at this stage. Depending on how the Kangaroos perform in the Ashes. he could receive a longer contract. But Webster said: 'Kevin Walters is basically the last man standing. The fact they have only given him three games shows their lack of faith. It could be a very tough tour. The Kangaroos used to be like the Harlem Globetrotters. But it's a different time now, and they are no longer the superpower that they were, and that's something Kevvie will have to deal with.' Walters' first job will be trying to convince Payne Haas, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to remain loyal to the Kangaroos. All three are reportedly considering switching allegiances and representing Samoa due to their heritage.

‘Momentous for sport': Rugby star praised for withdrawing from team due to concussion symptoms

Irish rugby star Garry Ringrose has been praised after he withdrew from the British and Irish Lions squad for Saturday's second test against Australia after experiencing concussion symptoms. The 30-year-old had initially been selected in the starting lineup but approached head coach Andy Farrell on Thursday to report his symptoms. Advertisement Ringrose has 67 Ireland caps but he is making his first tour appearance with the Lions, a team comprising players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The tours take place every four years and rotate between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. A concussion caused Ringrose to miss Saturday's 27-19 win over Australia. The centre returned on Tuesday in the 24-19 over the First Nations and Pasifika XV (a team made up of players of First Nations, Maori and Pacific Island heritage), coming on as a substitute in the 65th minute. Farrell said on Thursday that Ringrose had been picked to start on Saturday but after training, he withdrew from selection due to persistent effects from the concussion. Huw Jones will now partner Bundee Aki in midfield. 'It's head-related again, so I actually don't know at this stage (what's happened),' Farrell said at a press conference. 'It was literally as I was walking off the field, he came to me, and once it's mentioned, that's that. 'There was no incident, he was feeling good well in advance of Tuesday, fit and ready to play. No incident through the game at all, nothing yesterday and nothing this morning at all. 'But with these things, players are getting very good at telling the truth of how they feel. So it was a no-brainer to make the change straight away.' Lions captain Maro Itoje called Ringrose's actions 'selfless', with Farrell adding: 'It was very big of him and the right thing to do, 100 per cent. For the team as well, not just for Garry.' Headway, the brain injury charity, described Ringrose's decision as 'momentous for sport'. 'By flagging the ongoing effects of his brain injury, he has put the team first by stepping aside — allowing a fully-fit team-mate to take his place in one of the most high-stakes matches of the tour,' the charity said in a statement on Thursday. Advertisement 'By recognising the risks of playing while concussed, Ringrose has rightly prioritised his own health. In doing so, he is also setting an incredible example to other sportspeople at all levels. 'His act shows how far sport has come in understanding the short- and long-term implications of not treating concussion — or brain injury — with respect. 'It also highlights how difficult it is for medics to accurately assess players for the concussion — both in the immediate aftermath of a collision, and then the lingering effects, which can last for months. 'It takes players to be open and honest, admitting when they do not feel right. It takes incredible bravery, but it's a decision that could make such a difference to his long-term health.' Luke Griggs, chief executive of Headway, added: 'Garry's decision is incredibly brave. It's also selfless and potentially transformative in the way sportspeople at all levels consider brain injury. 'In doing so, not only has he protected himself from a potentially much more serious brain injury, but he's also set an incredible example for others. 'Looking after yourself and looking after your team are not mutually exclusive. No concussed player will be an effective team-mate, and no game is more important than your long-term health.' World Rugby launched a brain health campaign in November 2021 'to educate and support current and former elite players who might be concerned about their wellbeing and brain health'. Former France international Sebastien Chabal said this year that he cannot 'remember a single second' of his career. Now 47, Chabal appeared 62 times for France between 2000 and 2011, helping them win the 2007 Six Nations Championship.
