Dual-hub Synergy between Dubai and Hong Kong
Earlier this month, Ant Digital Technologies has chosen Hong Kong for its international headquarters to step up the overseas expansion of its blockchain and AI technologies amid a global technology frenzy. The Summit in Dubai strategically follows the establishment of its headquarters in Hong Kong – Both cities are known for their transparent and forward-thinking regulatory frameworks that actively support digital assets. In particular, Dubai's pioneering regulatory environment, particularly regarding tokenised securities, has positioned the region as a frontrunner in blockchain innovation, creating new avenues for various industries. Additionally, sophisticated investor communities in both cities, including family offices, sovereign wealth funds, and institutional investors, are receptive to explore alternative assets such as digital assets. Serving as pivotal hubs between the key markets of the Middle East and Asia, Dubai and Hong Kong facilitate round-the-clock market operations.
Moreover, the Middle East, situated in the "solar belt," stands as a prime locale for unlocking opportunities from renewable energy. Renewable energy assets, such as solar panels and battery-swapping stations, can be converted into tradable on-chain digital tokens. This innovative approach not only introduces fresh financing channels for renewable energy enterprises but also unlock alternative investment channels for global investors to engage in borderless, round-the-clock green investments. By democratising access to green financing, diverse investors can participate in the transition towards a greener future, fostering a more inclusive and liquid market for sustainable assets. In fact, Ant Digital Technologies, has facilitated transactions for 14 million new energy devices on-chain through the tokenisation of green energy assets, setting a global standard and exemplifying how green assets can unlock significant investment opportunities.
Dr. Zhao Wenbiao, CEO of Ant Digital Technologies, shared: 'At Ant Digital Technologies, we harness cutting-edge technology to empower diverse industries worldwide. Dubai and Hong Kong are both hubs of sustainable finance. Dubai provides an ideal platform to showcase our latest solutions and engage with a diverse audience seeking innovation in the blockchain and AI space. We're positioning Ant Digital Technologies as the digital bridge linking Middle East energy transition opportunities to Asia's markets. By integrating top-tier blockchain solutions into the energy RWA ecosystems of these regions, we aim to cultivate a 'dual-hub synergy' between Hong Kong and Dubai, propelling the global shift towards a digital economy.'
With a solid foundation in Hong Kong and a strategic foothold in Dubai, Ant Digital Technologies is poised to revolutionise the management and trading of real-world assets. At the intersection of Asia and the Middle East, the company's dedication to technological advancements is paving the way for a more interconnected and efficient economy. Looking ahead, Ant Digital Technologies is set to expand its global footprint, driving innovation and advancing technology development on a global scale.

Rights groups accuse Airbnb over listings in illegal Israeli settlements

Rights groups have called for the UK's National Crime Agency to investigate Airbnb over alleged money laundering offences they say it may have committed by listing holiday properties in Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories. Airbnb, according to two legal organisations which have brought the complaint, may have violated laws that make it an offence to handle money and property knowingly derived from criminal acts through its more than 300 listings in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. On Tuesday, the organisations - the UK-based Global Legal Action Network (Glan) and Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq - announced that they have filed a criminal complaint with the National Crime Agency over Airbnb's UK subsidiary. Airbnb is currently listed in the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights' database of businesses involved in activities in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. The filed complaint, one of several coordinated efforts announced on Tuesday, comes after the International Court of Justice July 2024 ruling that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters 'At a time when we are witnessing genocide in Palestine, businesses like Airbnb are providing services that deny the Palestinian people their means of subsistence, threatening the viability of the group,' said Shawan Jabarin, general director of Al-Haq. 'Following the finding by the International Court of Justice, that Israel's occupation is illegal, business activities trading in goods and services that maintain the illegal occupation, must come to an end.' In 2018, following a Human Rights Watch report which said that Airbnb's listings in settlements were unlawful under international humanitarian law, the company said it would remove listings in the settlements. But the company decision was reversed after legal action was brought in the US by hosts and guests of the listed properties, with Airbnb saying it would donate all proceeds from the rentals to humanitarian organisations. A spokesperson for Airbnb said on Tuesday that the company operates "in compliance with applicable Irish and US laws". "Since 2019, Airbnb has donated all profits generated from host activity in the West Bank to an international nonprofit, in line with our global framework on disputed territories," the spokesperson said. In addition to the complaint filed in the UK, Glan has also filed a legal challenge at Ireland's High Court after the Irish police refused to investigate the role of Airbnb Ireland in facilitating the listings of settlements. Additionally, Glan has sent a 'preservation letter' to Airbnb's parent company, the first step in proceedings under the US Foreign Legal Assistance statute which allow for the discovery of documents to support the Irish and UK actions. Glan senior lawyer Gerry Liston said: 'These are the first ever cases to apply anti-money laundering legislation in the UK and elsewhere to business activity in the illegal Israeli settlements. "They demonstrate that senior executives of companies profiting from Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory risk prosecution for a very serious criminal offence.'

UK Invests £14 Billion in Nuclear Revival

A decisive £14.2 billion funding package has been confirmed to propel the construction of the Sizewell C nuclear power station and to seed the development of the country's first small modular reactor fleet. The government asserts this marks a pivotal moment in reshaping the national energy landscape, targeting energy security, net‑zero goals, and economic growth through job creation and industrial benefits. Energy secretary Ed Miliband described the commitment as heralding a 'golden age of nuclear', driven by the need to break free from volatile fossil‑fuel dependencies and rapidly rising electricity demand projected for mid‑century. The financing will facilitate two French-designed EPR reactors at Sizewell C in Suffolk—expected to supply electricity for approximately six million households—and support a pioneering SMR programme by Rolls‑Royce SMR, designed to generate up to 1.5 GW across multiple sites. The Sizewell C project has been under consideration since 2010, and the latest capital injection resolves enduring uncertainties surrounding its fate. State funding of £14.2 billion, alongside previous public commitments, brings total taxpayer investment to nearly £17.8 billion. EDF holds a 16.2% share in the project, with government ownership at 83.8% as of December—which is likely to shift over time. ADVERTISEMENT At the height of construction, Sizewell C is expected to employ around 10,000 people and create 1,500 apprenticeship roles. Contracts totalling £330 million have already been awarded locally, with forecasts indicating up to 70% of future contracts going to UK‑based suppliers, encompassing over 3,500 domestic firms. The SMR competition concluded with Rolls‑Royce SMR chosen as the preferred builder after two years of evaluation against rivals Holtec and GE Hitachi. HM Treasury has pledged £2.5 billion for SMR development over five years, and government agency Great British Nuclear anticipates deploying three Rolls‑Royce reactors, generating around 3 GW and supporting 3,000 jobs at peak construction. Rolls‑Royce SMR emphasises its reactors will be factory‑built pressurised water designs intended to reduce cost, complexity, and delivery times, with grid connection anticipated in the mid‑2030s. Chief executive Chris Cholerton hailed the decision as 'a milestone achievement' for domestic growth and high‑skilled jobs. Critics caution that such megaprojects often encounter cost overruns and delays—Hinkley Point C being cited as a cautionary precedent. Detractors warn that the Sizewell C cost may escalate to £40 billion and that consumer electricity bills may increase by approximately £1 monthly to fund the investment recovery. Alison Downes of Stop Sizewell C questioned whether full costs have been disclosed and argued the project risks burdening taxpayers and households. The government contends it has learned from Hinkley by establishing a new regulatory and commercial framework intended to align shareholder incentives with schedule and budget adherence. Ofgem will act as economic regulator to safeguard consumer interests. Complementary investments include £2.5 billion in fusion energy research over five years; £6 billion towards the submarine industrial base, and subsequent investments in advanced fuel infrastructure aimed at reducing reliance on non‑domestic nuclear fuel sources. EDF's UK CEO Simone Rossi welcomed the funding decision as an affirmation of Hinkley Point C's role in revitalising Britain's nuclear expertise and capacity. Industry leaders such as Tom Greatrex of the Nuclear Industry Association view the integrated Sizewell C and SMR strategy as a crucial industrial and export opportunity for British nuclear manufacturing.
