Common compute capacity surpasses 34,000 GPUs in India: Ashwini Vaishnaw
New Delhi: India's national compute capacity has crossed 34,000 GPUs, the government said on Friday, adding that three new startups have been selected to build AI foundation models.
Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said that 367 datasets have already been uploaded to 'AI Kosh'.
The minister also underlined IndiaAI Mission's role in fostering reverse brain drain and creating a comprehensive ecosystem encompassing foundational models, compute capacity, safety standards, and talent development initiatives.
He emphasised that these efforts are aimed at building a complete and inclusive AI ecosystem in India. The 'IndiaAI Foundation Model' pillar within the India AI Mission aims to develop and deploy indigenous foundational models trained on India-specific data.
Till April 30, 506 proposals have been received. On April 26, Sarvam AI was selected to build India's sovereign large language model (LLM) ecosystem, developing an open-source 120 billion parameter AI model to enhance governance and public service access through use cases like "2047: Citizen Connect" and "AI4Pragati".
This follows the earlier launch of the Sarvam-1 model (2 billion parameters) and the Sarvam-M (24B parameters) model with hybrid reasoning capabilities.
Vaishnaw urged the newly selected teams under the IndiaAI Mission to aim for a top-five global position in their respective sectors.
Soket AI will develop India's first open-source 120 billion parameter foundation model optimised for the country's linguistic diversity, targeting sectors such as defence, healthcare, and education.
Gnani AI will build a 14 billion parameter Voice AI foundation model delivering multilingual, real-time speech processing with advanced reasoning capabilities, while Gan AI will create a 70 billion parameter multilingual foundation model targeting "Superhuman TTS (text-to-speech)" capabilities to surpass current global leaders.
Emphasising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of democratisation of technology, Vaishnaw said, 'Technology should not be left in the hands of a few. It's very important that a larger section of society should be able to access technology, develop new solutions and get better opportunities.'

The granular details merit attention. Job growth is plateauing in back office and administrative roles. Companies are investing in AI-driven workflow management and centralised operation hubs to curb costs and bloat. Gen AI and the emergence of inference and agentic solutions are propelling automation in factories and offices. AI-powered bots and self-service portals are replacing HR functions. Tech start-ups seek marketing and growth via AI. In media and entertainment, AI is driving post-production and audience engagement. The sectoral trend has been visible—especially in IT jobs—and is accelerating. The gloom sensed by job seekers has popped up persistently in expert articulation every few months. This week, Dario Amodei, once on the founding team of OpenAI and currently CEO at Anthropic, warned of a 'white-collar bloodbath'. Amodei said, 'AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs.' The man who is building the large-language model Claude, which ironically is used to retrench human interface, says, 'Lawmakers don't get it, CEOs are afraid to talk about it and workers won't realise the risks' until after it hits. Amodei has plenty of company. Bill Gates has predicted, 'Within 10 years, AI will replace many doctors and teachers.' We know of AI reading of cancer imaging. Now, AI-based mammography is here and is raising ethical questions. There is no dearth of studies either. An IMF research estimates that AI will affect almost 40 percent of jobs around the world, replacing some and complementing others. A report of the US Senate recognises: 'AI has the potential to affect every sector of the workforce—including both blue-collar and white-collar jobs.' A report by Goldman Sachs says the emerging capabilities of AI models will result in companies eventually 'employing AI workers' along with humans.

Two-day visit: Shah in Kolkata today, to hold meet with eye on 2026 polls
Two days after Prime Minister Modi's visit to Alipurduar district in West Bengal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata on Saturday night. According to sources in the state BJP, Shah during his two-day visit, is scheduled to hold some crucial meetings with senior leaders as well as attend a series of official and party programmes on Sunday. He will be staying at a hotel off EM Bypass. His Sunday itinerary includes a series of programmes: Amit Shah will inaugurate the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Rajarhat, said sources and will then return to the hotel to hold a series of meetings. Around 2 pm, he will be addressing the party workers and leaders at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, in Kolkata. According to a senior party leader, the meeting will focus on the party's blueprint for the Assembly Election in 2026, including key issues affecting the public, concerns over women's safety and security in Bengal and 'the corruption within the TMC.' 'Amit Shah Ji will give us a roadmap for the next Assembly polls in the state. We have never done such a huge sabha, we have done sabha in science city. We want the PM to come every month and make Mission Bengal a success,' Union Minister and BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said. After the meeting, the Union Home Minister will visit the ancestral home of Swami Vivekananda at Simla Street in north Kolkata and then return to Delhi.

"Every citizen must experience impact of Modi Govt's transformational schemes": Jitendra Singh
New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Member of Parliament from Udhampur-Kathua-Doda Lok Sabha constituency convened a comprehensive constituency-level meeting via video conferencing to finalize a month-long series of activities commemorating 11 years of the Modi Government on Saturday, an official statement said on Saturday. Fresh from launching the 'Viksit Bharat Krishi Sankalp Abhiyaan' at RS Pura in Jammu alongside the Union Agriculture Minister, Jitendra Singh, called upon officials to ensure the campaign reaches every district and mandal. Emphasising 100 per cent saturation of flagship schemes like Ayushman Bharat, he urged officials to leave no beneficiary unregistered. 'Every citizen must experience the impact of the Modi Government's transformational schemes,' he stated. Highlighting recent strides in science-driven agriculture, Singh showcased a series of transformative initiatives reshaping the agri-economy of the region. The Biotech Industrial Park in Kathua has been made operational and integrated with Biotech Kisan Clusters, serving as a hub for innovation and farmer-scientist collaboration. The Purple Revolution, marked by the successful cultivation of lavender in Bhaderwah in collaboration with IIIM Jammu, has now spread to neighbouring states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, enabling young agri-entrepreneurs to earn lakhs through sales in high-end perfume markets. The Union Minister is also set to launch the two-day Lavender festival on June 1 at Bhaderwah. Under the Floriculture Mission in J&K, over 385 hectares have been brought under cultivation, directly benefiting more than 3,000 farmers, with breakthroughs such as genetically engineered roses that can bloom in desired colours and across seasons. He also noted the empowerment of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to generate employment and income. Moreover, he highlighted the development of an AI-based agricultural decision-making system for J&K, aimed at transforming traditional farming practices. As part of the Gram Krishi Seva Yojana, four Agromet Observatories have been commissioned in Ladakh, Srinagar, Jammu, with four new district-level Agromet units in Kupwara, Baramulla, Kathua, and Reasi, backed by SKUAST. Touching upon the nation's historic and cultural identity, Singh emphasised the importance of remembering and honouring key national milestones and movements. He recalled the Emergency of 1975 as a 'Black Day', underscoring the need to observe its 50th anniversary on June 26 as a reminder of the value of democracy and civil liberties. In anticipation of World Environment Day on June 5, he directed renewed enthusiasm for the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, encouraging citizens to participate with greater dedication and vigour. Singh also advocated for grand celebrations on International Yoga Day (June 21), particularly at major tourist destinations, to highlight India's global leadership in wellness and mindfulness. Furthermore, he appreciated the Tiranga Yatra, linking it with the success of Operation Sindoor, and called for its continued celebration as a symbol of national pride and collective self-esteem. As Member of Parliament, Jitendra Singh laid out a comprehensive schedule for the month-long celebrations marking 11 years of the Modi Government.
