Annamayya district is spruced up for World Environment Day on June 5, giving top priority to a massive tree plantation drive, wetland protection initiatives, and bolstering the forest cover.
District Collector Sridhar Chamakuri on Friday directed the heads of all the departments to be prepared to contribute their mite for the success of the mega event.
The Collector was addressing a review meeting with the officials of the forest, agriculture, and horticulture departments at the Collectorate here. Mr. Sridhar discussed the action plan for Environment Day activities with the officials, and the key subjects included conducting the Vanamahotsavam events across the district, identification and protection of the wetlands.
The forest officials informed the Collector that the Annamayya district was home to a good number of wetland belts. Members of the Wetlands Committees across the district were advised to submit their reports promptly to chalk out the conservation strategies.
The Collector observed that all departments must submit their action plans to ensure the success of World Environment Day events. 'The event should not only focus on the celebrations but also produce a tangible spirit that could make a lasting impact by galvanising the green cover and conservation of all the existing eco-systems,' the official said.

Environment day: PM Modi to launch Aravalli Green Project tomorrow
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the Centre's Aravalli Green Wall project, on June 5 to mark World Environment Day, to combat desertification and restore degraded land across four states, Environment Ministry sources said Tuesday. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will join the PM for planting a tree in Delhi's ridge area, the sources said. The Chief Ministers of Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat will also plant trees in their respective states, sources said. The land restoration project was initially launched in 2023, and the Ministry launched a detailed action plan for the project recently. While the land restoration project was initially launched in 2023, a detailed action plan for the project was launched recently. The project, pegged at `16,053 crore, aims to create a buffer zone of 5 km around the mountain range, covering 6.45 million hectares. Ministry sources said the project would also contribute in meeting India's key climate goals of creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent through improving tree and forest cover. India has also committed to restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. Extending from southwest Gujarat in Champaner to northeast Delhi and Haryana, the 700-km long Aravalli mountain range acts as a natural barrier against incursion of sand and dust from the Thar desert. It supports rivers such as Luni, Banas, Sabarmati among others, as well as keystone wildlife such as tiger, bears, wolves and leopards. However, the range is facing widespread degradation due to deforestation, mining, urbanisation, agriculture practices and development.

BJP's Sankalp to Siddhi campaign to begin this week
Nagpur: BJP's state working president Ravindra Chavan on Tuesday held meetings with Vidarbha-based party officials as part of their nationwide campaign "Sankalp Se Siddhi" which begins this week. This campaign will cover events ranging from environment day to yoga day to marking the anniversary of the Emergency imposed during Indira Gandhi's regime. Addressing the media in Nagpur, Chavan said, "Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, India has grown from strength to strength. We have now become the fourth largest economy of the world and will soon rise higher. As part of our campaign, we will be organizing multiple events to ensure that this message reaches a wider audience." "We have around 80 organizational districts in the entire state. Of this, 19 organizational districts are based in Vidarbha. Today's workshop was held specifically for office bearers of these Vidarbha-based organizational districts," Chavan added. The party also has various cells, representing different sections of the society as well as communities. Even office bearers from these cells were part of the workshop held on Tuesday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Conheça o Alarme com Sirene que afasta os Ladrões com 40% Off Verisure Saiba Mais Undo Regarding the anniversary of the Emergency, Chavan said that it was a Black Day for the country. "We must ensure that nobody forgets what happened. PM Narendra Modi has always honoured those who raised their voice against the Emergency and upheld democratic values," Chavan said. The slew of events which the party has planned, will be keeping its members on their toes. This involvement of party cadres in various activities is seen by some as a strategy to keep the outfit in poll readiness. However, BJP leaders disagree saying the party organizes such campaigns to raise public related issues. "We have International Yoga Day coming up, then there's Environment Day. We are the only party which takes the initiative to involve the public in such issues," said a Nagpur-based party member.
