Mystery surrounds 'huge' Woolworths news that foodies in the know are gossiping about
Rumours of the new Golden Bakery Banana Bread Crumpets started circulating online in recent days, generating huge interest among crumpet fans.
The news was first broken by Melbourne food reviewer Nectro Vlangos, who goes by the online name @NectoriousPapi, after he posted about the upcoming launch to his TikTok account.
In a 17-second video titled 'New and Coming Soon to Woolworths', one of the featured product items that momentarily flashed on-screen was a product image of the new Golden Bakery Banana Bread Flavoured Crumpets.
The brand's iconic crumpets have been reimagined with a 'banana bread' flavour, and are set to be sold in a packet of six square-shaped crumpets.
According to the product label, the product is a 'new limited edition' variety and is 'made with real banana'.
FEMAIL spoke to an inside source who confirmed that the upcoming product launch would be available for a limited item frame and would be sold in select locations. They were unable to confirm the exact launch date in stores.
Golden were unable to be reached for comment by FEMAIL. But their own social media channels have thus far remained tight-lipped about the upcoming product launch.
Nevertheless, the comments section of the @NectoriousPapi video were alight with excitement from Aussie shoppers interested in tasting the new breakfast hybrid food.
'I don't even like crumpets but banana bread anything, count me in,' said one shopper.
'Keen for the crumpets', added another.
Rumours of the upcoming special variety crumpets also reached Facebook, revealed in one post that solely contained the six-word headline: 'Look what is coming to Woolworths'.
The Facebook post attracted loads of replies from curious foodies, with some already planning how they can use the new 'game changing' item to level up their breakfast.
'This with butter and maple syrup will be next level!' replied one.
'I'm imagining spreading with butter and cinnamon sugar, added another.
'Pour some custard in the holes and air fry for a few minutes then drizzle with maple syrup,' suggested a third person.
However, a few commenters expressed concern about the unusual flavour combination.
'I can't help but think these will taste like the 80s... When your sandwich got packed in the same lunchbox as your banana so everything tasted like banana,' read one laughing reply.
'Cannot put vegemite & cheese on banana crumpets, that ain't right,' said another.
'Does it taste like real bananas or does it have that yucky fake banana taste? I wouldn't mind trying it but depends what everyone else thinks,' questioned a third.
George Weston Foods, the parent company of Golden Bakery, recently launched a quirky new advertising campaign under the slogan 'make every bite Golden'.
Although the new campaign champions the classic Golden Bakery Crumpet, a spokesperson told B&T that the message was about inspiring Aussies to reimagine the humble crumpet with delicious new possibilities.
'Golden crumpets have always had a place at the table, and now we're giving people more reasons to bring them back, play with them, and make them their own,' said George Weston Foods marketing and innovations director Brett Grebert.

Sam Burgess had been 'hell-bent' on joining the Manly Sea Eagles. Under the stewardship of legendary coach Des Hasler, the Sea Eagles had gone on to win the 2008 premiership, having placed as a runner-up the year prior, before going on to win the flag again in 2011. The club was expanding and it was an attractive prospect for 'Slammin Sam' Burgess, who admitted he had been blowing up Hasler's phone with calls, even offering to play for the club for reduced fees. Multiple other clubs had been interested in snapping up the former Bradford Bulls star, who had his sights set on making a move Down Under to play in the NRL. But that's where Hollywood A-lister Russell Crowe stepped in. The Gladiator star and co-owner of the South Sydney Rabbitohs had been over in the UK at the time filming Robin Hood and had heard through the grapevine that the now Warrington Wolves coach, Burgess, was making rumblings about a move to play rugby league in Australia. So Crowe got hold of Burgess' phone number and gave the footy star a quick call to see if he could tempt him to join the Bunnies. But speaking to cricket legends, David Lloyd, Sir Alastair Cook, Phil Tuffnell and Michael Vaughan on The Overlap and Betfair's Stick to Cricket show, Burgess revealed he actuall snubbed Crowe's phone call because he thought someone was prank calling him. 'We were playing down in Wales at the time,' he said to The Overlap and Betfair's Stick to Cricket show. 'I'm just getting a massage - you're not really supposed to have your phone on the massage beds - but I took the call because I was taking anything at the time. It was Russell Crowe on the phone! 'I thought someone was pranking me, so I hung up. I thought: 'I'm not paying a fine just for someone on a prank phone call'. 'Anyway, he rang me back a few times, I let it go through.' After Burgess got off the massage bed, the Bradford Bulls star finally answered one of the Gladiator star's phone calls. 'He said: 'It's Russell Crowe. I want to catch up with you, I want to meet you. Do you want to come play in Australia?' 'I said: 'Yes, I do.' He said: 'Okay then. I'm filming a movie in Derby, I'll be there next week, you want to come down?'' Burgess, who had spent three years at Bradford before finally moving to the Souths in 2010, agreed to come down and asked the Hollywood star if he could bring some friends along with him. Crowe, keen to get the England star on board, obliged. 'So, I took four of my mates down and we go to this fancy hotel in Derby - can't remember what it's called - that's where he was staying,' he told the cricket legends. 'We arrive and security's there - 'Name? Where are you from? Who are you seeing?' - Yes, come in. My mates are all walking in, looking at this establishment. We sit and have dinner - the cutlery's laid out perfectly. Burgess and his friends sat down for dinner with Crowe but the footy great revealed that rugby was not spoken about once during the meeting. Apple and Google found to have breached Australia's competition laws in landmark court case
Tech giants Apple and Google have been found to have engaged in anti-competitive conduct, paving the way for a payout that could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Epic Games, the developer of popular online game Fortnite, sued the two tech giants in the Federal Court, claiming they engaged in anti-competitive and unconscionable conduct against those developing apps distributed through iOS and Android devices. The lawsuit was launched after Epic was booted from Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store after attempting to introduce its own payment system into Fortnite games in August 2020. Justice Jonathan Beach on Tuesday found Apple and Google had breached Australia's competition laws, upholding key elements of Epic's case. Apple had a 'substantial degree of market power' because of the restrictions placed on in-app payment systems and the distribution of iOS compatible apps, he said. Google also had a significant degree of market power and was the predominant supplier of Android apps, the court was told. The tech companies' dominance had the effect of substantially lessening competition and breached Australia's competition laws, Justice Beach found. However, he rejected Epic's argument Apple had engaged in unconscionable conduct. Justice Beach also found in favour of a class action lawsuit comprising Australian developers and gamers who claimed Apple and Google's monopolistic practices led to inflated prices. The app developers had to pay higher commissions than they otherwise would have if there was more competition in the market Lawyers for the plaintiffs welcomed the result as a significant win for consumer rights and digital fairness that could have global implications for how digital platforms operate. 'This judgment is a turning point,' said Kimi Nishimura from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers. 'It sends a clear message that even the most powerful corporations must play by the rules and respect the rights of consumers and developers alike.' The lawyers said the decision could result in 'one of the largest class action payouts in Australian legal history with potential compensation of several hundreds of millions of dollars to come from two global corporate Goliaths'. The parties have been given time to consider the 2000-page judgment and will return to the Federal Court at a later date to determine compensation and directives aimed at increasing transparency. A Google spokesperson said the company disagreed with the court's characterisation of its billing policies and practices and would review the full decision. Apple has also been forced to implement changes to its App Store in Europe, including allowing third-party payment systems.

Australia's 28th prime minister Tony Abbott has been spotted in a role few would expect - directing traffic in a busy Sydney CBD car park. A driver recently exited the underground car park beneath the Theatre Royal Sydney on King Street, and was greeted by Abbott as he used hand signals to guide vehicles through the congestion. The former leader appeared completely at ease, although no hi-vis was in sight but rather he was wearing business clothes that wouldn't be out of place in parliament. Footage surfaced on social media this week, but it is believed to have been filmed in June during the 40th anniversary run of Cats the Musical, which is currently showing at the historic theatre. Daily Mail understands that theatregoers had just poured out of the evening performance, creating a significant traffic jam underground as dozens of cars tried to leave at the same time. Abbott then stepped in to help ease the chaos, waving drivers forward and helping them navigate the bottleneck. While the sight of a former prime minister managing traffic may seem surprising, it's not out of character for Abbott. He has been a volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Davidson Brigade in northern Sydney for more than 20 years. RFS members are often trained in traffic control and assist in such duties during emergencies, skills Abbott has put to use both during disasters. Throughout and after his political career, Abbott has been frequently seen on the front lines of major crises.
