Millions in China head home for Lunar New Year in ‘record high' migration
Railway stations and airports across China have seen the biggest peak in travellers in advance of the Lunar New Year as millions of people return home to spend the holidays with their families in an annual migration that is expected to be a record.
The Chinese New Year, the Year of the Snake, begins on Wednesday.
During the traditional 40-day period that runs before, during and after the holidays, some nine billion interprovincial passenger trips, on all forms of transport combined, are expected to be made, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
Train and air travel are expected to 'hit record highs' during this year's migration, Xinhua said.
The Ministry of Transport said it expects 510 million train trips and 90 million air trips during the period.
According to China Railways, which has added thousands of trains to meet demand, Saturday was 'the main peak' at stations before the holidays.
It said it used data from ticket sales and waiting lists to predict and regulate supply.
With many people working and studying in provinces other than theirs because of better opportunities, there is a large population migration around the New Year holiday.

Storm kills 10 in China as tourist boats capsize
A sudden storm in southwestern China's Guizhou province has capsized four boats, killing 10 people and injuring 70. More than 80 people fell into the water, state media reported on Monday, when the rain and hailstorm struck the vessels on a stretch of the Wu River near Qianxi City on Sunday afternoon. Rescue operations ran overnight. Initial reports said nine people had died, with one person missing. However, rescue personnel discovered the missing person, who 'showed no signs of life', around noon, state broadcaster CCTV reported. A witness interviewed by the state-owned Beijing News said some passengers managed to swim to safety after the storm had descended rapidly, and thick mist obscured visibility on the river. According to CCTV, the boats involved were not overloaded. Each had a maximum capacity of 40 passengers. Provincial authorities dispatched some 500 emergency personnel to lead the rescue operation. President Xi Jinping called for 'all-out efforts' in the search and rescue operations and treatment of those injured, state news agency Xinhua said. Xi also 'underscored the importance of strengthening safety measures in tourist attractions' and other large public venues, the agency said. He also noted a string of recent fatal incidents across the country. The Wu River, which winds through Guizhou's mountainous interior, is a popular destination for domestic tourists, particularly during holidays. China's May Day holiday, from May 1 to May 5, saw a sharp increase in domestic travel. Government data cited by state media showed that many tourist destinations across the country were overwhelmed by crowds.

Chinese Lunar New Year starts as millions celebrate the Year of the Snake
The Chinese New Year festivals and prayers have marked the start of the Year of the Snake. Hundreds lined up in the hours before midnight at the Wong Tai Sin Taoist temple in Hong Kong in a bid to be among the first to put incense sticks in the stands in front of the temple's main hall. The holiday — known as the Spring Festival in China, Tet in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea – is a major festival celebrated by communities around the world. The snake, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, follows the just-ended Year of the Dragon. The sound of firecrackers greeted the new year outside Guan Di temple in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday, followed by lion dances to the rhythmic beat of drums and small cymbals. Ethnic Chinese holding incense sticks in front of them bowed several times inside the temple before sticking the incense into elaborate gold-coloured pots, the smoke rising from the burning tips. Many Chinese who work in bigger cities return home during the eight-day national holiday in what is described as the world's biggest annual movement of humanity. Beijing, China's capital, has turned into a bit of a ghost town, with many shops closed and normally crowded roads and subways emptied out. Russians cheered, waved and took smartphone photos of a colourful procession with drummers, costumed dancers and large dragon and snake figures held aloft that kicked off a 10-day Lunar New Year festival in Moscow on Tuesday night. Visitors shouted 'Happy New Year' in Russian and expressed delight at being able to experience Chinese food and culture in Moscow, including folk performances and booths selling snacks and artwork.
