Shelter Dog Returned for Being 'Bad Listener,' Then Comes Devastating Twist
A couple, who had gone to the rescue to adopt him, saw a glaring red flag on his file. But what they learned about the reason behind it was a devastating twist that completely changed their perception of the dog. One of the owners shared the story in a TikTok video, which has gone viral with over 768,000 views.
The owner explained the couple's initial hesitation. "The day we were adopting Zephyr, the rescue took out his folder and written in all capital letters across the top it said 'RETURNED!'" she wrote in the video's caption.
"My husband and I were not supposed to see that, but we did. A little skeptical and concerned we asked what the problem was and why he had been returned," the owner added.
The rescue staff informed them that Zephyr had been brought back by his previous family because he was a "bad listener" and would not follow their commands. Despite the report, the couple decided to give the dog a second chance.

The day we were adopting Zephyr, the rescue took out his folder and written in all capital letters across the top it said ' RETURNED!' When I question the rescue about that note she quickly covered it up. My husband and I were not supposed to see that, but we did. A little skeptical and concerned we asked what the problem was and why he had been returned. The rescue informed us that the family brought him back after a few days because he was a bad listener and would not follow any of their commands. My husband and I decided we still wanted to give that for a chance. He deserved a second chance at life and we would do our best to make it work. Within 48 hours of having him home we suspected he was hearing impaired. We knew there was an impairment, but we didn't know to what extent. About one week later, the vet confirmed that he has absolutely zero ability to hear. Who was that that moment that I broke down and cried in the car because now I knew why he was labeled.' a bad listener' by the family who had originally rescued him. They thought he was a bad listener because he wasn't responding to their verbal commands. But he couldn't hear them so he wasn't a bad listener. Not in the least bit. It was at that moment that I swore to him he would never be returned again, and that he was home and safe. We instantly began training him by using American Sign Language, facial expressions, body language, and other visual gestures. Zephyr learned his commands so quickly! In fact, he is the best listening dog we've ever had. He follows all directionsand wants nothing more than to please us. In this video you will see truly how quickly he responds just to a flashing light. He knows it's time to go home, where mommy and daddy are.#fyp#americansignlanguageclub#home#safe#safeandsound#foryourpage#viral#dogsoftiktok#reel#viralreel#longislandny#rescuedog#happydoggie#kindnessmatters#bestdogever#viralvideo#texas#newyork ♬ original sound - sped up songs 🫶
The Heartbreaking Truth
Within 48 hours of bringing Zephyr home, the couple suspected he had a hearing impairment.
"We knew there was an impairment, but we didn't know to what extent," the owner wrote. A week later, their suspicions were confirmed by a veterinarian. "The vet confirmed that he has absolutely zero ability to hear."
This devastating news clarified everything.
"It was that moment that I broke down and cried in the car because now I knew why he was labeled 'a bad listener' by the family who had originally rescued him," the owner said. "They thought he was a bad listener because he wasn't responding to their verbal commands. But he couldn't hear them, so he wasn't a bad listener. Not in the least bit."
It was then that the owners made a vow and swore they would never return him—that he was home and safe. The couple immediately began training Zephyr using visual cues, including American Sign Language, facial expressions and body language.
And the results were astonishing. Zephyr learned his commands quickly, and he is "the best listening dog we've ever had," the owner wrote.

The video's powerful message resonated deeply with the online community, who praised the couple for their dedication and questioned the care provided by the rescue.
"These are the type of people who should have fur babies," one person wrote. "You didn't center yourself and instead focused on his needs and becoming the best people for him to meet those needs. Verbal communication, especially with dogs, is only a small percentage of the process."
Another user, who was frustrated by the situation, wrote: "Honestly … I'm so mad at the rescue. As someone who worked in veterinary medicine and knows intake procedures, they absolutely should have caught on that he was deaf. But, it worked out that he found you."
Zephyr's story is a reminder of the importance of patience and compassion when adopting a shelter dog—more important, it shows that what may seem like a "bad" behavior can be the result of a physical need, and, with the right owners, a pup can thrive and be a faithful companion.

Is Indianapolis a 'major' US city? The internet can't decide. Vote here for your picks
Quick, without reading any further, name four major U.S. cities. ...Was Indianapolis one of them? There are thousands of cities in the United States, but according to the internet, four are more important than the rest. Which ones are they? That's up for discussion. Social media's latest debate revolves around the notion that the U.S. only has four "major" cities. The criteria and evaluation of which ones make the cut are up to each respective user, but many people seem to agree on at least two of them. Thousands of people, from content creators to professional athletes, have weighed in on the discourse across platforms like TikTok and X in recent weeks. What do you think? Take our survey at the bottom of this story. Ranking one area as more "major" than another is obviously subjective, but many online commenters concur on two cities' inclusion in the list: New York City and Los Angeles. They are, after all, the most populous cities in the U.S. and each offer a lot in other criteria that netizens have used for evaluation. The third spot is where it gets dicey, as some users have staunchly advocated for Chicago to be included, while others argue against it. "I think we all need to come to a general consensus that the top three are locked in," content creator Eli Rallo said in an Aug. 3 TikTok, which has been viewed more than 625,000 times to date. "It's indisputably New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago." "Chicago just isn't top 3, NY and LA are the only for certains," one commenter said on the video. When it comes to other contenders, several cities have circulated in online discourse. "The real debate should be the fourth one," user @ said in a July 30 TikTok. "I've seen a lot of like, Miamis, or like, I've seen some people say D.C. 'cause it's the capital." "If we're being honest there is no big 4 or even big 3. It's just NYC and LA," one commenter wrote on the video. Factors like a city's size, sports teams or historical significance have all been used by social media users in weighing the four major U.S. cities. How about population? New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston are the top four largest cities in the country, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. However, many have emphasized the importance of factors other than size. "Remember, it is not just the biggest cities, it's the major cities," user @hoodieguyspam said in a TikTok. "You have to factor in cultural impact." One cultural impact to note, at least to some, is where to develop a career. "Everyone goes to New York City or LA to follow their dreams, or industry there, there are just lots of opportunities," user @reagans_ratings said in a TikTok. International recognition has also played a factor in some rankings. "As a Brit I'd always say New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Chicago. They're the most populous and noteworthy for us across the pond," one commenter said. Indianapolis is the 16th most populous city in the country, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, but numbers don't tell the whole story. Think sports. The best drivers in the world flock to Indianapolis every May to compete in the "greatest spectacle in racing," the Indy 500. Indianapolis is home to major sports teams like the Colts, the Pacers and the Fever. Who shoots hoops for the WNBA in Indianapolis? That's right, Caitlin Clark. When high school students in Los Angeles study "Slaughterhouse-5," its author is Kurt Vonnegut and his hometown is Indianapolis. When the world needed a reminder about tuberculosis, its dangers and the need for increased access to treatment, author John Green stepped up, a passionate Hoosier for Indy if there ever was one. Major entertainment stars from Indianapolis include David Letterman and Babyface. Indy's important figures in Black history include Madam C.J. Walker and Jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. What about just the fun stuff? Last we checked, Chicago isn't home to the largest and longest-running tabletop gaming convention in North America. Tens of thousands of the world's most passionate geeks flock to Indianapolis every year for Gen Con. If you want a thrilling TV drama, sure, there's no shortage of them set in New York City. But if you want a downhome American family, producers prefer the Midwest, often in Indiana — many in Indianapolis. What to watch: These popular TV shows are all set in Indiana. What's your favorite? Do you agree on New York, Los Angeles or Chicago? Is there a city you think should enter this debate? Take USA TODAY's survey and weigh in on what the four major U.S. cities are below. This survey includes the 50 most populated cities in the U.S., according to the Census Bureau. Melina Khan is a national trending reporter for USA TODAY. She can be reached at

Dog Jumps to Action to Save Kids in Pool—But There's a Twist
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Ignoring signs and her own safety, a dog jumped into action to rescue children she thought were in danger, instantly receiving praise from the internet. Owner Amanda Morgan told Newsweek via email that her dog, Tinker, is the sweetest, with an especially "soft heart" for children. She first noticed the dog's protective instincts while taking her nephews and Tinker to the lake and swimming. "She tries to haul them out of the water, so I actually had to stop bringing her to the lake with them because she panics when they're in the water," Morgan said. One day, Morgan took her dog on a walk around the neighborhood, but when Tinker heard her favorite children—whom she visits often for pets—jumping and yelling, she became genuinely worried. Morgan knew they were "just being kids" and enjoying a summer day splashing in the pool, but Tinker went into protective mode. Screenshots from a June 9 TikTok video of a dog looking at her owner after trying to save kids who she thought were drowning in the pool. "I had to physically pull her away so she wouldn't hurt herself." But without knowing the children were safe, Tinker kept trying. She cried and threw herself on the ground. It took Morgan about 15 minutes to finally drag Tinker away from the pool. A parent of the children even came over, after seeing Tinker's concern, reassuring her everyone was safe. Tinker not only ignored the signs that the children were not drowning, she also put herself out there to protect them despite not knowing how to swim herself. Morgan said Tinker will not swim in deep water even if she wears a life jacket. "Tinker doesn't like everyone, she's scared of a lot of people and dogs, but she will do ANYTHING for people she loves," she said. "She's a very special dog." Her heroic actions, although not necessary in that moment, touched people's hearts, and as of Monday, the TikTok video reached over 516,400 views and 70,800 likes. "Okay but real talk, Tinker is a badass for that. Attempting to sacrifice herself for her kiddos. She is a very good girl," wrote a viewer. Hoping she received appropriate compensation for her work, someone said: "Her medal for bravery must have been off camera." A third person commented: "That's true love and loyalty." Woman reveals why you should stop throwing away silica gel packets: 'I had no idea'
Woman reveals why you should stop throwing away silica gel packets: 'I had no idea' TikToker That Jewelry Girl (@thelastinglook) shared a hack for using silica gel packets rather than throwing them away. "I had no idea," one follower shared. The scoop In the video, the creator, who loves all things jewelry, said she puts the small packets that come in most packages in her jewelry box to help absorb moisture and humidity to prevent her jewelry from tarnishing. "They're free," she touted. Some users had no idea the packets could be used in that way, while others chimed in with their own successful ideas for how to use them, including putting them in suitcases for traveling, inside storage boxes with papers such as photos or books, and in your handbag. Another commenter shared that they placed them in their safe, and one TikToker said they put them inside boxes of holiday decorations. The possibilities seem endless. How it's helping When thrown away, silica gel packets can be harmful to the environment. They often end up in landfills or oceans because they are made of non-biodegradable plastic, so they don't break down naturally. Repurposing them keeps them from becoming single-use plastics, which are plastics that are designed to be used only once and then discarded. Single-use plastics contribute significantly to pollution, so reducing them is a critical step in protecting human health and the environment. Some cities are issuing bans on single-use plastics in an effort to help. Silica gel packets often contain chemicals that can cause health issues if ingested by humans or animals. By repurposing them, you can keep your belongings dry without spending any money, and you're also taking a step to reduce waste. They can be used to dry out electronics that have been exposed to water, you can add them to your gym bag to keep it smelling fresh, or they can be put in a toolbox to absorb moisture. What everyone's saying In addition to creating a forum for environmentally conscious TikTokers to share their own hacks for repurposing silica gel packets, the video inspired appreciation from those who now have the opportunity to do better.
